Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday home in Roatan - L'Alizé

5 BR 5.5 Bath home, salt water pool, 1500s/f travertine terrace, water view

Nestled above a private cove beach ( locally called a “keyhole”) on the South shore of the tropical island of Roatan, L’Alizé enjoys both a constant sea breeze and a dramatic view of the Caribbean every day of the year. L’Alizé derives its name from the French word for African trade winds, (alizés) which flow East to West during the warmest months of the year. These dramatic winds account for a such a surprising cooling effect on the hottest days, that it quickly becomes clear why Roatan’s earliest towns settled on the South side of the island where these winds rarely fail to cool and refresh while they keep the bugs in check.

L’Alize was built by one of Roatan’s premier builders in 2008-2009. The building techniques and materials reflect attention to detail and quality construction. Keen usage of space, and maximization of views and sea breezes, remind one that this exquisite home was built to be enjoyed year round by the builder himself.

In 2011 a major renovation added the pool, deck, cottage, two bedrooms and two baths.

In 2014 L'Alize was awarded the distinction of a luxury destination for Homeaway’s Luxury Rentals site, by Andrew Harper, a leading luxury travel company TM, . Only two of Roatan's vacation rental properties have qualified for this prestigious rating (see luxury.homeaway.com).

L’Alizé, is spaciously laid out to maximize the 3500 sq/ft., with a large master bedroom and master bath complete with double shower. There are additionally 2500sq/ft balconies and decks. The 3rd floor guest room enjoys a spectacular view with a large private deck and spacious bath. The second floor great room opens to a large deck, The kitchen, living and dining room occupying the entire second level. The breathtaking view invites you to sit and take it all in. An ample half bath is conveniently located on this level. Air conditioning was installed in the dining area /living area for those rare days when the winds die down.

The first floor addition has its own kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths and a living-area which, overlooks an equally stunning view of the pool, patio and the Caribbean. High speed internet now reaches this area as well. Recently upgraded the internet provides 5mb/sec download speed.. Wireless Internet works on all 3 floors.

This first level living has speakers which can connect via aux cable or iphones/ipad, cable. This room opens to the pool area.

The house is rented as a 4 bedroom home but, we offer discounts to parties of 4 or less. The guest cottage can be added to offer more space for larger parties.

Eddie our capable groundskeeper will tend the pool and rake the beach each day and assist you as needed,–even pick up your carry out. Olga, his wife, will competently provide daily housekeeping (please let her know when you would like her to come) and even prepare typical Honduran meals (on request), so everyone can relax a little more.

About Rosanne

Owners' kids slack line across the path to the keyhole beach.

Owners live and work in Central America. L'Alizé's natural beauty and privacy provide a place to catch up on unfinished business. This is an ideal setting for uninterrupted reading, painting or writing. With their children they enjoy exploring caves, the rope swing and snorkeling.

Rosanne purchased this house in 2010

Why Rosanne chose Roatan

A true getaway. Nestled in dramatic untamed beauty on pristine turquoise shores with abundant wildlife, makes this home a refuge as well as a great place to celebrate family gatherings. Restaurants, and grocery stores are only minutes away.

What makes this house unique

L'Alizé has all the modern conveniences of home with the feel of an outpost on an uninhabited island. The view from the second floor great room took our breath away the first time and each time we visit. We never get used to the beauty.

The home is well maintained and regularly updated with the amenities we want to find.

L'Alize is a lovely place with all the amenities of home. The kitchen on the second floor has plenty of counter space and everything you need to cook your favorite meals. The BBQ on the deck is perfect for grilling up some fish! It seems that there is a great view of the ocean from every point. Whether enjoying a leisurely brunch on the deck, dining at the large table while gazing through the double doors at the ocean, or sitting on the comfy couch to watch a movie or play games, the view is always right in front of you. The beach is just a short stroll away and is very private. The keyhole (ocean inlet) is really lovely to cool off in, or as an entrance to great snorkeling to the right and the left. No cruise ship tourists have been standing on the coral here! There are caves to explore, iguana to watch scurrying over the rocks and other beaches nearby to visit as well. Some people love to swim and snorkel and explore, while others enjoy laying out and working on their tan. I like to do both and this is the perfect place! The benefits of privacy come with the small cost of a very steep hill to get to the main road. A rental car would be very helpful, but it is possible to walk up the hill and flag down a taxi for the short drive to West Bay or West End. We also got the phone number of a taxi driver who dropped us off and just called him to come get us when we wanted to go into town. Gumbalimba park is very close with zip lines and plenty of wildlife (including birds that will perch on your head and monkeys that crawl across your shoulders!) The dolphin show at Anthony's Key resort is always fun as is the little museum there with some information about the islands. If you tire of the peace and quiet, you can head into West End for some excellent dining and live music at several venues on the weekends. L'Alize is an all around great place to vacation. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a little piece of paradise!

Owner response: Thank you for your lovely review. We hope you will come back soon to enjoy this “little piece of paradise” .

L'Alize, the Serene Getaway

L'Alize, the Serene Getaway
  • 4 out of 5
I was fortunate to have vacationed at L'Alize on Roatan with a group of friends last summer (August 2014). Upon our arrival, the property was very clean and inviting. The owners were there to greet us and provided detailed instructions regarding the various facets of the property. My friends and I were fortunate to utilize the services of a personal cook who was also very welcoming, who prepared authentic Honduran cuisine daily. I stayed in the upstairs twin bedroom which was equipped with all amenities- bedding, towels and soap/shampoo. The balcony connected to the room was ideal for admiring the landscape as well as providing a private and relaxing environment. My favorite feature of the property was the patio pool that overlooks the surrounding jungle and ocean. The serene keyhole beach access is a short scenic walk behind the house. I appreciated the available snorkeling kits provided by L'Alize which enabled me to explore coral reefs of Roatan. My only complaint was the high grade of the driveway which was almost too steep for our rental scooters and mopeds. The connecting street at the top of the driveway is not ideal for hailing a taxi, so a car or scooter is recommended to guests for utmost mobility. The nearest restaurant/convenient store is about a 10 minute drive, too far to walk. Overall, my stay on Roatan proved to be one of my most memorable vacations to date. It was the best atmosphere to spend time and to get away from reality. I would love to return to Roatan and book L'Alize sometime in the future.

Owner's Response: I greatly appreciate the time you took to post a thoughtful review.
You captured the essence of what makes L’Alizé so special, –principally its protected location. L’Alizé rests in a pristine landscape where the Hama lizards (a type of iguana) and Agouti (in the capybara family) are far more likely to cross your path than other humans.
One of the ways our location remains off the beaten path, is its geographic triage. The steep hill that separates us from the rest of West Bay, and makes for a challenging walk, or slows down a scooter, supports the isolation and tranquility most guests are looking for.
Because of our sequestered location, we offer the L’Alizé van at a reasonable rate. Guests can enjoy the isolated beauty yet still get to the nearby shopping and restaurants in West Bay Beach, which is about 1 mile away. In about 3-5 min from the home you can enjoy 18 restaurants and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Although on most days, I would prefer to stay at the peaceful cove at L’Alizé.

An Exclusive Island Haven of Beauty and Comfort: the Perfect Vacation Destination!

  • 5 out of 5
The on-line pictures of L'Alize accurately portray the layout, furnishings, and amenities of this house. What the pictures cannot express is L'Alize's peaceful spirit, cohesive artistry, and natural wonders that encompass one's senses upon entering this space. Pictures and words are completely inadequate in comparison with the satisfaction of being here and experiencing this lovely home (it is much more a home than a house) and its Roatan environment.
My husband Patrick and I spent our honeymoon at L'Alize from June 28 - July 5, 2014, and every aspect was thoroughly enjoyable. The staff of L'Alize is tremendous. Orsy provided safe, efficient transportation from the airport, to the store, and to L'Alize. It is most convenient to get any groceries prior to arriving at L'Alize; when you walk through the front door, soaking in the beauty and calm of this haven will be the only thing you want to do!
Olga and Eddi are very hospitable, and our bags were brought in and groceries put away in a moment's time. Olga offered to cook for us (a great convenient option to have a week off from cooking!). Patrick and I both enjoy cooking, so we took advantage of Roatan's supply of fresh produce and concocted various dishes in both the well-stocked kitchen and outdoor charcoal grill. It is a huge benefit that L'Alize's water is drinkable, a rare feature in this area.
The pool was often our place to relax in the sun or coool off in the water, and Eddi kept this in immaculate condition, which was a sizeable task with the windy weather. The wind made it difficult to snorkel at L'Alize's lovely keyhole beach, but we saw a wide variety of sea life, which showed this is typically an excellent place for snorkeling. Also, calm water is only a short drive away at West Bay, which offers a plethora of sea life not far from shore. L'Alize has snorkeling equipment available upon request, which is convenient (especially when you can snorkel in the keyhole!) and helpful in providing flexibility for the guests and avoiding costly resort rentals.
While L'Alize provides household essentials like a well-stocked hotel or island vacation house, the atmosphere would be very difficult to find elsewhere. Sip the rich roast of Honduran coffee as the morning sun shimmers over the keyhole waves. Stare at an endless canvas of stars with the cooling alize (tradewinds) flowing over the master balcony through the night. This place is wonderful, and we hope L'Alize welcomes guests for many years to come!

Owner's Response: Like you I enjoy cooking and so would not opt for help in the kitchen when it is offered.
We have made it a point at L’Alize to stock the kitchen like a cook would like it, largely because I like to cook. But about a year ago I started training Olga to cook for guests, because this was such a popular request, and understandably so. Now a honeymoon is a little different. I understand why one would not want help when cooking for 2, but when hosting a large group of 8 or more, cooking help is a definite plus.
This may come as a surprise, but I have not used Olga’s cooking services, until this week and what a great idea that turned out to be.
Last week while we were at L’Alize with my two older sons and a few of their college friends, I decided to ask Olga to cook all our meals. Allowing me more time to enjoy my family
It was an eye opening experience.
We arrived late on the afternoon ferry, to a beautiful, clean home where I just sat and enjoyed the view, which is really all you want to do when you first arrive, while a lovely home cooked meal, of Pollo guisado, just appeared on the table. Olga quietly left us to enjoy the meal.
The next day when Olga and her sister came to make breakfast they finished cleaning up from the night before and made beignets.
Because I like to cook I have not asked Olga to cook for our family other than for training purposes, but liking to cook a meal and bearing the weight of every meal with a large group of people, are two different things. This week I discovered that Olga is really a good cook and she ends up saving you money by doing the grocery shopping. I go to the usual U.S. style grocery stores and purchase what I know and like, which can be quite expensive on Roatan.
Olga goes to the market and finds just what is required for the meals and shops where the locals shop, getting the items they know well at the best prices. (She gives you the receipts to repay her directly)
I believe that even paying for the week of meals and getting the food (she takes a taxi), I recouped what I would have spent had I done the shopping for our group. Not to mention the time I could spend on the beach reading a book rather than going over a list at the grocery store.
Overall it was a great week for mom who got a break from cooking, but everyone seemed pleased with the tasty and abundant food.

perfect getaway

  • 5 out of 5
We booked our trip almost a year in advance. L'Alize looked amazing and there were many activities that appealed to us to do with our adult children; kayaking, scuba diving, canapy tour, snorkeling and dining out often. As happens in life, just prior to our trip, we were met with the sudden death of a parent, placing the other parent in a skilled care facility and packing up years of memories to sell their home.
L'Alize and the beauty of Roatan were exactly what our family needed. We spent our time differently than anticipated but equally enjoyable. We enjoyed the weather, sunny and hot but breezy always. The pool was perfect for a quick cool down. We loved the walk to the keyhole and all of nature's suprises once down there. Lots of hermit crabs, snails, rock formations, clear blue water and a cooling mist as the surf crashed against the iron shore. We would knock coconuts from the trees and make wonderful island cocktails and sit by the sea. We discovered Olga's cooking on our arrival day and opted to have her cook multiple dinners..delicious! We enjoyed the beachside bars for a drink and some soccer, great snorkling right in front of the Grand Roatan which had many TVs and good food. Scuba was incredible. Nothing can beat waking to the rooster's call (others said it was a negative but we liked the start to the morning) and sitting on the master deck with a great cup of coffee while the day begins.
The car was a must! The instructions are so inclusive that you know exactly how to handle all situations that might arise which were few (power outage, propane tank change---both of which were handled promptly by Eddie or Tish.) All of then staff were outstanding and great at their jobs. The beauty of the home and surroundings and the peaceful pace provided the perfect vacation we were looking for.

Wonderful Stay at L' Alize

Wonderful Stay at L' Alize
  • 5 out of 5
Absolutely wonderful stay at L' Alize. We were picked up promptly by Carlos at the airport who ran us by a grocery store on the way so we could stock up on food. Tish met us and gave us the grand tour where we also met Olda, Eddie and Olena their daugter who is a very sweet girl. The breeze is quite nice blowing through the house so AC is not needed. Although we used the AC's in the bedrooms at night to sleep. The first 2 days the keyhole was way too rough to go out snorkeling but not a problem because when this side of the island is rough chances are the opposite side is calm. So the first day we snorkeled in front of Infinity Resort and then made arrangements for dives with the dive shop there. By the 4th day the winds shifted and the keyhole was very calm so Eddie unhooked the kayaks and we threw our snorkeling gear onto them and paddled out a ways to snorkel right off the keyhole. The walk back to the house for a picnic lunch and pina coladas is not too far so we spent the entire day down by the keyhole. Be sure to have Olga cook for you a few times while at L 'Alize. Her fried fish and plantains are to die for. Plenty do to on Roatan. Would definately go back to L 'Alize.

Owner's Response: It sounds like you took advantage of the keyhole beach bursting with the rugged, untouched beauty of the South Shore and enjoyed the more tame North side of the island with miles of perfect white sand beaches. This is one of the great advantages of being at the tip of the West side (West Bay), where the North shore and the South shore are only a mile apart. We look forward to your return. Thanks for your review.

L'Alize should be called L'Amazing

L'Alize should be called L'Amazing
  • 5 out of 5
From the minute we decided to book L'Alize until we boarded the plane to leave Roatan we were given top notch service. Our pre-trip planning was a breeze and we had tons of help from the owner and manager. Upon arrival we were met at the airport and taken to the local grocery store to stock up on supplies. From the store it was about a 20-minute ride on curvy and pot hole riddled roads to the house.
The drive into L'Alize is STEEP! Thankfully the house came with a van because without one you would be hard pressed to walk out to the road. We were given a tour of the house by Tish (the manager) and introduced to Olga, Edie, and their family (our caretakers, cooks, and concierge).
The house is as described, perhaps even better, and pictures can not show how truly amazing it is. From the second you walk through the door you are preoccupied with the incredible view out every window. We spent a great deal of time on the decks but there were nights we had to eat inside because the breeze could be a bit much. However, waking up in the morning in the master suite is unbelievable! The breeze rolls through the room, the sounds of the ocean are in the distance (along with a rooster), and you can lay in bed and watch the sunrise.
We had a BBQ chicken and Mahi Mahi on the charcoal grill (grab charcoal at the grocery store). We had to be creative with the grill placement because of the breeze but that was easily done. We also made pasta one night and brought in pizza from Bananarama in West Bay (very good). The kitchen is very well stocked and it was easy to cook for our large group (12 total).
There are stairs everywhere at L'Alize and you must conquer a fair amount of them get to the beaches. Both beaches are decent and Edie attempts to keep them clean but a fair deal of trash can wash in each night. The surf was a bit much for snorkeling for most our group but it was possible. The beach in front of the house is next to the caretaker's house but the second beach (a 10 minute walk) is quite secluded. Edie gathered up wood one night and started a beach fire for us, all we had to do was ask.
You are between West Bay and West End and both are easy to reach (we spent the majority of our time between the two). South Shore Zipline is a very short ride from the house (You will pass it daily). We ended up spending $140 for gas but we were constantly on the move.
The guest house was a good add on for us. The pool was perfect. You will NOT be sorry if you stay

Owner's Response: Thank you for this thoughtful review.
The van we offer guests to rent, is practical for going between the nearby beaches, (West Bay 1 mile , West End 6 miles) but is a bit of a gas guzzler (12m/gal) for longer distances. Added to this is the reality that gas on the island is around $5.
If one plans to do a lot of site seeing on the island you can hire a driver (Orsy our driver does this as well). This takes much of the stress out of traveling around on the tortuous island roads. With Orsy you don’t need to know exact directions because Orsy knows all the cool places on the island and he has a nice spacious van (Seats 13).
The other option for getting around on the island is Econo rental car. They have late model cars which are fuel efficient and fun to drive, but most are standard transmission. They cost around $350 /wk but you will save on gas.
