ENCHANTING HOUSE RIGHT ON THE BEACH AT PLAKA FOR A ROMANTIC HOLIDAY

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday home in Plaka - Folia

One bedroom house and garden to sleep a max. of 4 in the village of Plaka

A unique property for the area, Folia is right by the sea, with the bedroom 'on the beach'. The single storey house makes no pretence to be modern, but has all amenities for a truly wonderful holiday. There is a double bedroom facing the sea; a spacious living/dining area with 2 built in couches suitable as single beds; a separate kitchen and shower room. Furnishings are traditional and add to the Cretan flavour of this old village school house. An outside staircase takes you onto the flat roof which is a magnificent area to sunbathe or take an evening cocktail overlooking the sea below you. A delightful garden with trees and plants gives you a unique view to the Island of Spinalonga and your private gate to the sea only a couple of meters away. The garden opens onto the road in Plaka and is only a few seconds walk to the nearest restaurant also on the beach.

It is a perfect place for couples and honeymooners.

Suitability:
  • suitable for elderly or infirm
  • children welcome
  • pets not allowed

LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!

The large bedroom window is a metre from the sea and we fell asleep each night to the sound of the waves. The room faces East and the sunrise over Spinalonga is spectacular.

We also watched the full, orange moon rise from the roof terrace.

The Old School House is quaint but well equipped, well maintained and clean.

Michael, our host, was very helpful and answered any questions we had.

Plaka is quiet and peaceful and beautiful with lots of choice of places to eat.

We will return!

FABULOUS PLACE

  • 5 out of 5
I agree with all previous reviews. Lovely house, beautiful views, friendly village - it was perfect for our honeymoon. We remember hot sunshine, blue seas, gorgeous cats, swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear and warm water; feeding the fish from the back doorstep, wandering to one of the many super tavernas for drinks and dinners;sitting under the cool tree on the patio having breakfast; drinks and sunbathing on the roof - I could go on! Just go there!

ENCHANCING FOLIA

  • 5 out of 5
My husband, daughter and I stayed at Folia, in Plaka, between the 1st and 7th September, 2012.

The most magical vacation we have ever had and we do travel a lot!

We took 3 flights to reach Heraklion (almost 24 hours with layovers) where Michael, the manager of Folia, met us. After packing our voluminous luggage into his vehicle we started the hour long drive to Plaka.. It was dusk and as the beauty of the area unfolded, we got totally into holiday mode!

We spent the week exploring the surrounding areas in a car that we hired.. Heraklion, Aegious Nicklaus, Elounda and a day trip to Santorini! Each place was unique and so full of history!

I cannot wait to get back and explore all the places I could not fit in on this trip.

Plaka itself is the most perfect holiday destination and Folia is so very unique. With cafes all around, it is convenient located and you have only to open the back gate to descend directly into the pebbled beach. Carob Tree, walking distance from Folia, provided us with some awesome meals.

Folia is equipped with a functional kitchen, where we made ourselves breakfast every morning before heading off for the day.

Michael is so full of knowledge about the customs and history of Plaka and a great host!

THANK YOU FOLIA AND MICHAEL FOR THE BEST TIME OF OUR LIVES!

FANTASTIC FOLIA!

  • 5 out of 5
We had a very enjoyable stay at Folia in Plaka and would highly recommend it. It is ideally situated right on the water so you are snorkelling after a few short steps down onto the beech. The bedroom window looks straight out onto the sea and over to Spinalonga, which is an awesome view to awake to. The accomodation is very tastefully done and has everything one needs for a short stay. I would recommend it for couples, especially those who are looking to have their own space and want a different experience away from the more generic types of holiday accomodation available on the island. We ate most of our meals in and the terrace offers shade and a view over to Spinalonga during mealtimes. The roof terrace is perfect for a sunbathe or an evening beer or two. It was everything we wanted from our week there and would definitely return in the future. Plaka itself has a few restaurants and bars that are open late and serve some good food. The local square has a great atmosphere in the evening to enjoy a drink or dinner in. The local bus runs regularly into Ag Nik and further afield if you want to explore. Ferries take you from right next door to the accomoadation over to Spinalonga. You can also hire Kayaks from the adjacent beech if you want a more adventurous trip over to the island. I did a lot of research on accomodation before booking Folia and had absolutely no regrets, so go for it!

PERFECTLY PEACEFUL HOLIDAY

  • 5 out of 5
We so much enjoyed our week at Folia House in Plaka and wish we could have stayed longer. The house was beautiful, simple but with everything you need and the location on the beach was fantastic. Very comfortable bed too. Just to step out of the back gate into the clearest water and be surrounded by hundreds of fish. The garden was lovely for reading and we had the pleasure of the company of a very cute little cat. The village was wonderful too and all the locals were very friendly and you couldn't get much closer! the mini market had everything we needed and a great choice of tavernas with wonderful Cretan food. We made the trip to Spinalonga early in the morning before all the crowds and felt the atmosphere at it's best. It was very sad and moving. We had a day in Elounda and caught the bus there and a cab back. A perfect holiday if you just want to relax and watch the water and the village go by. Michael was so helpful but not intrusive and picked us up from the shuttle bus, which proved unreliable on the way back to the airport and after a quick phone call, he picked us up and took us to the airport himself. Thanks very much. We would certainly return to this beautiful haven.

GOOD TIMES AT FOLIA

  • 5 out of 5
We spent some amazing few days in Folia both with our children and then alone. The house is full of character, secluded despite being in the village. The main bedroom faces the sea and we would all wake up to see the sun rise on the horizon and over Spinalonga. Three steps from the garden take you to the pebble beach and the water. The sea was really as clear and as beautiful as on the photos although we did experience in the last days some very strong blows of Meltemi which is common all over the region.
There are restaurants on either side but check the recommendations first. We went to the one with the open terrace which was good and cheap and 20 meters away! Despite the proximity, our tranquility was never troubled and we spent evenings on the roof terrace gazing at the stars. Plaka is much quieter and peaceful than Elounda and far less touristic and we just spent most of our time there. The house has everything needed and we certainly did not miss a TV.
Michael who manages the property lives locally and was very helpful. Any query was dealt within the day and he was a mine of information for trips around the area, local restaurants and other points of interests. He even rescued us for 1 night when it turned out that we had made a mistake in our bookings and needed an extra night accomodation! Whilst he would only contact us if we asked him to, he has been very friendly and we even ended up meeting some of his friends on a boat trip on our last night which was one of the memorable times of our stay.

Car: recommended

Plaka is situated to the north east of Crete, 5 minutes by car from the town of Elounda, 15 minutes from Agios Nikolaos and about one hour from the capital's airport, Heraklion.

The region is full of historical interest and is in an area of outstanding beauty. The mountains and sea are never far away. The island of Spinalonga is 10 minutes by boat and the famous archealogical site of Knossos just over an hour away. Swimming at Plaka is on a large pebbled beach excellent for snorkelling. It is a paradise for walkers and nature lovers. Griffin vultures nest in the mountains overlooking Plaka.

There are many old Cretan villages in the mountains above Plaka and overlooking the north coast; there are unspoiled coves and roads with fantastic views and local cafeneons to take a break from the sightseeing.

For the young there are sandy beaches 5 minutes away in Elounda or further afield around Agios Nikolaos. Also water parks and a golf course are less than an hour away.

Wonderful locatio

Notes:
Folia was lovingly restored by an Australian family who used to spend their Summers in Plaka for about 25 years.Situated on the 'main' road in Plaka which still enjoys only light through traffic, the village maintains its charm with only a few tasteful boutiques, a mini market and some lovely tavernas and cafe neons. There has been some recent interest in the area with the novel, The Island, by Victoria Hislop and you can take a boat to the island from Plaka. The book is currently being filmed for a tv series. The house is a sturdy stone structure with traditional thick walls keeping it cool in Summer. The roof terrace is a stunning place to sit and if you are early birds the sun comes out of the sea at dawn- unforgettable!-.
