About Jane Mawer

I am English and live in Norfolk, UK, but love to visit France. I am a retired paediatrician, with a grown-up family.

English is my first langage, of course, but I can correspond in French or German if you will excuse my mistakes!

Jane Mawer purchased this house in 2006

Why Jane Mawer chose Prades

Prades is situated in a beautiful and varied area with access to many activities and places of interest and a wonderful climate. The house is just of the central main square. It is an old stone house, one of the oldest in Prades, and was in need of considerable renovation when bought in 2006. It has retained a unique and homely charm, much appreciated by guests.

What makes this house unique

This house is within a short walking distance of all shops and amenites and the wonderful Tuesday market and is ideally situated for people attending the nearby spa for tratment. It has the added advantage of private parking and a small garage. There is a very large sun terrace (shaded with cannise during the summer) and a shady courtyard. The large open cellar has table tennis and a spare fridge. There is plenty of storeage space for bikes and equipment. The house is looked after by Judy and Chris Bloomfield, who meet guests on arrival and are available if needed.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great week in the Pyrenees spent walking in the mountains. This place is a delight with everything you need. We were so lucky to book this at short notice. Many thanks for a lovely stay.

Centrally located beautifully appointed house

  • 5 out of 5
We had a very enjoyable time in this lovely house just off the central area of Prades. We found the house large, well maintained, well equipped and with everything done in the best of good tastes. It had a personal touch and warmth which you don't often find in holiday accommodation. We found the owner very easy to deal with and very attentive when we were making our preparations. It was a great success and we recommend the house very enthusiastically.

We really enjoyed the ancient architecture of this house, sympathetically restored with modern comforts. It's quiet position while being only round the corner from the main town square and all amenities also gave us just what we look for in a holiday home.

Charming, delightful

  • 5 out of 5
With my family, including our three children (14, 11, 7), my husband and I loved our week in Prades, and in paticular at Maison L'Oranger. The weather was perfect - warm and sunny. The house itself was large, clean, well-supplied, and simply delightful. There were many nooks for us to spread out or spend time together. As we had such lovely weather, we spent many hours outside on the amazing sundeck, enjoying both the distant views, and also the immediate surroundings of ancient stone houses and walls. If the weather had not been so great the home had plenty of games, books, DVDs, etc to keep anyone occupied for days, but we didn't need any of it. What we did appreciate though was the large amount of local information and brochures to inform us of the possibilities. We enjoyed a trip on the Train Jaune to Mont Louis, lunch at Villefranche, exploring the steep but magical nearby village of Eus, fresh sardines at Coullioure, and rafting on the Aude River. We also enjoyed the days we stayed around Prades, the local Tuesday market, or buying wine, baguettes and cheese, and picknicking at home. The house is just a few steps from the main square, and shops enough to self-cater with no problems if you prefer not to drive. If you have a vehicle there are also supermarkets, but not within walking distance of the house. Parking is very tight - we recommend a small car. Chris and Judy, the local contacts, were friendly and accommodating, and Jane herself was responsive to all of our emails when arranging the rental. Many thanks Jane for the effort you've obviously made in the beautiful renovation of this special home. We found it truly a lovely holiday.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. Regarding supermarkets, there is a small one nearby, in the centre of town, if you don't want to drive to the bigger ones. Thanks for your helpful review. Jane

A lovely house in Prades

  • 5 out of 5
We spent a week here and thoroughly enjoyed it. The house is ideally positioned in the centre of Prades, very close to the main square. It has all the required amenities and more, is finished beautifully and has a nice homely feel to it. The large sun terrace is ideal for sitting out with a glass of wine in the evening. The owner, Jane, has thoughtfully left lots of tourist information and guidebooks for Prades and the surrounding area which we found really useful and helped us to plan some day trips. There's also plenty of books and dvds for rainy days - though luckily we only had one of those. All in all a lovely holiday - we would definitely return.

house at prades

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at this house for a week in March for my husbands 60th and it was fabulous. The weather was extremely kind which enabled us to explore the area and what a beautiful area. The house itself was very spacious and had absolutely everything we needed. There was a lovely square to shop and sit in just around the corner with several very good restaurants - we found the locals very friendly. We all particularly enjoyed sitting and eating on the roof terrace with its lovely view of Canigou. Would certainly stay here again and fully recommend it to all. PS we did enjoy the blackbird sitting on its eggs in the lemon tree in the courtyard!

Prades is a small market town, 45km west of Perpignan, tucked in the foothills of the Pyrenees & close to iconic Mont Canigou. The scenery is stunning and varied. To the East, in the Tet valley, are peach & cherry orchards, olives & vines, leading to the Mediterranean beaches (45min); to the West are the Mountains, with spectacular scenery, caves & warm springs. The town itself has a Romanesque church, overlooking a shady square, where cafes & restaurants spill onto the pavements and an excellent weekly market sells local produce. Both French & Catalan influences are seen in its culture, language, cuisine & festivals. Ancient churches & abbeys, picturesque villages & fortified towns reflect the area's rich history. There are nature reserves, mountain lakes & many wonderful hiking trails; the more adventurous may climb Mont Canigou (2785m). Activities include riding, mountain biking, climbing, fishing, canyoning & white-water rafting, swimming, skiing (45min), or you can relax in the thermal baths or spa. Good bus and train services.

Ski: There are a number of ski stations within an hour's drive of Prades, each with a range of runs to suit all abilities. Although accesible by train or bus, travel by car is advised. Consider stopping off at the Thermal baths of St Thomas on the way home- wonderful for relaxing tired muscles!
