Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Montpon Menesterol - Les Barthes
2 Bedroom cottage, sleeps 5, Bordeaux/ Bergerac area

This delightful cottage, only minutes from the services of a small market town, is perfect for a peaceful – but convenient - rural break. Sleeping 5 and well-equipped throughout, it includes a restful family/reading room with french doors opening into the garden with woodland beyond. The garden is large, secure and level – ideal for children - & includes an above ground pool. Relax on sun loungers beneath the wisteria on the veranda, or enjoy al fresco dining using the charcoal BBQ. This is how holidays are meant to be.

Large lounge with dining table. Kitchen incl. dishwasher + separate utility room with washing machine. Master bedroom has double bed, wardrobe, drawers. Bedroom 2 has guest & single beds, wardrobe, drawers. Bathroom – modern, has power shower, corner bath, toilet, built-in vanity unit, storage cupboards. Separate second toilet. Sun loungers x 3. Linen & towels included. Food welcome pack. Additional options include: baby sitter, airport taxi, maid service.

Welcome to the Northern Dordogne which, whilst least well known, offers some of the best attractions in the region. Within 35-40 mins drive you can be savouring the atmosphere (and wine) of St Emilion's vinyards – the oldest and probably most famous wine town in France. If you’re seeking restaurants/retail therapy the stylish city of Bordeaux is within 1 hrs drive (alternatively you can choose to take a direct train from Montpon). The atmospheric, provincial town of Bergerac is 50 mins drive away. For history buffs we recommend visits to the Lascaux pre-historic caves, Aubeterre’s subterranean church and Chateau de Puyguilhem and Chateau de Hautefort. Traditional French markets abound throughout the region and you can visit a different one every day if you wish! Ste-Foy-la-Grande (25 mins drive), on the River Dordogne, is the closest bastide town. Atlantic ocean (with amazing sand dune) and Arcachon's seafood restaurants is around 2 hours drive away.

The countryside is beautiful with large tracts of woodland and pasture being cut through by gentle river valleys. During the summer there are many centres offering canoeing trips along the Rivers Dronne and Isle. As you would expect many of the attractions are situated in the countryside - on your doorstep is ‘Loisirs de Chandos’, Montpon's local park that enjoys views of the River Isle. A canoe/kayak centre operates from here during the summer months. The park also has an open air fresh water swimming lake (it's fashionable for the French to swim in outdoor lakes) complete with cafe, beach, childrens area and lifeguard (summer only). On site toilets. Lac du Jamaye (FREE entry and only 20 minutes drive away) is a much larger lake with even more facilities. The leisure park consists of a protected natural area, walking, rock climbing, archery, mountain biking, cafes, outdoor play areas and swimming. Lac du Gurcon is about 30 mins drive away and has similar facilities.

The surrounding is ideal for keen walkers and cyclists with peaceful, quiet routes offering scenic views of the surrounding Double forest, countryside and river. Montpon town centre is a short, relatively flat ride away - perfect for visiting the boulangerie (baker) when preparing for a leisurly breakfast!

Guests who love nature will enjoy the region with abundant birdlife within the nearby woods and river. Deer and wild boar are often spotted too. Regional gourmet food includes fois grais and truffles.

Departure airports for the UK include Bordeaux (1 hour) and Bergerac (50 mins).

Montpon has a Tourist information office (open 7 days a week) who will be able to provide you with details of current festivals, exhibitions, shows e.t.c.

'Les Barthes' was perfectly located, with everything you could want for a restful holiday. Our children enjoyed the new swimming pool and even at the end of August the weather was warm enough for swimming. There is a Casino store right across the road which was very useful for provisions and the internet was very stable.
Our family also enjoyed walks along the river towards Montpon centre (from 'Les Barthes', turn left and follow the road round until you see a field on the left. The river is at the back of this field..)
The motorway network is right next to Montpon-Menesterol, so all of the Dordogne and further afield are easily accessible. We went for a day trip to the Chasm at Padirac. It certainly is worth the 2 hour journey, but make sure you get there as early as possible (before 10 a.m.), as there are very long queues to get inside (2-3 hours, not joking!) The amazing Atlantic Coast beaches are not far away at around 90 minutes distance, and we can recommend the resort of Lacanau-Ocean (especially if you have children) and the journey from there down the coast to Cap Ferret. The beaches are truly stunning. All-in-all, we highly recommend this holiday home. Thanks again for a great week at 'Les Barthes' !

Perfect Spot for Exploring

My husband and I enjoyed a weekend at Les Barthes to celebrate our first anniversary. We were greeted by a lovely welcome pack and a bottle of champagne and flowers which was very sweet. We were able to drive to St. Emilion and spent the day there which was fabulous.

The house itself was lovely. Clean, very well equipped and warm. Heating and hot water came on without any problems. The shower was good too which is not always the case in holiday rentals! They have sky tv, pleny of books and wifi which is useful too. The owners had left a comprehensive guide not only to the area but to the house as well which was very useful. The garden was lovely and would have been well used if it had been a bit warmer.

We were lucky enough to eat at the nearby Michelin star restaurant, Auberge de l'Eclade, which I highly recommend. Great service, so much so that even the chef drove us home after we had finished our (lengthy) meal!

Les Barthes provided a lovely, relaxed environment and was the perfect base to explore the beautiful Bordeaux region. A quick drive to Bordeaux airport too so not much time is wasted getting there!

Thank you!

Les Barthes in July 2011

  • 5 out of 5
  • Review Submitted: 30-Jul-2011
  • Date of Stay: Jul 2011
We are a family of four (two children under eight) and spent a very relaxing week at this clean, comfortable and well-equipped holiday cottage. When we arrived, there was a lovely welcome pack, including good quality french bread, milk, Camembert and a bottle of red wine. Just what we needed after a day's travelling!

The cottage was peaceful, yet within 5 minutes walk of a supermarket (and a 5-minute drive to a hypermarket), close to a park and within walking distance of the nearest market town, Montpon. The town itself didn't have a lot of restaurants, so we tended to eat at the house in the evenings (the kitchen was well-equipped) and have a main meal while out and about during the day. Montpon did have a great local market (Wednesdays) and a lovely bakery - my daughter enjoyed practising buying a loaf of bread and some croissants in French!

The cottage was also very accessible to tourist spots such as St Emillon, Bergerac and Perigeux. Although not on the coast, Lake Jamaye was a short drive away and the children loved the 'beach' and the playground. There were plenty of markets within driving distance - the Friday market in Riberac is particularly worth a visit.

All in all, the cottage felt rural enough to be away from it all, but close enough to amenities to make it convenient for a young family. I will certainly recommend the house and the area to family and friends, and was very impressed with the efficiency and detailed information provided by the owner/agent.

Montpon in April

  • Review Submitted: 27-Jul-2011

We stayed at Les Barthes in early April and had a fantastic, relaxing family holiday. The weather was lovely and we had a week of sunshine and temperatures of around 25 - 30 degrees celsius.

The house is comfortable, homely and very well equipped. The kitchen had everything we needed and we had BBQs on 2 of the nights. Our 3 year old loved the garden and the selection of toys in the playroom. One of the highlights of our stay was the beautiful wisteria on the verandah was in full bloom and was simply amazing.

The house is well situated for day trips to Bergerac, St Emilion, Rocamadour, Bordeaux and Pyla sur Mer (a GIANT sand dune on the atlantic coast). The market in Montpon is held every Wednesday and was certainly a highlight of our trip.

The nearby Casino shop is well stocked and there is a bigger hyper just a few minutes drive out of Montpon.

I would recommend Les Barthes for a family, and would say that a car is needed to get the best out of the surrounding area.
The caretaker and the owner were very helpful and friendly.

My mother (French speaking, originally Belgian) and I have been travelling in France on and off for the last 20 years.

Our stay in Les Barthes was a thouroughly enjoyable experience! The house is very well equipped and the terrace is wonderful. In the early hours you can sit and watch lots of different birds (especially if you keep the bird feeders filled up...), squirrels and even a local cat roaming around in the garden.

Great location for Bordeaux wine exploring; everything is within easy daytrip distance.
Also, the local markets in the neighbouring towns are well worth a visit.

An ideal place for a "grown-up" holiday - everything you need to be comfortable + calm surroundings and lots of sightseeing opportunities within reach.
