About Joe Leming
Vickie Lynne and I have known (of) each other since we were teenagers. When we went off to college my mother encouraged me to call her for a date. We dated very seriously and were 'pre-engaged' from 1975 - 1977. In 1977 we parted ways. Both married others and had children. After I became separated in 2007 I learned that Vickie Lynne was also single. We re-kindled our relationship and were married April 30th, 2011. We have 9 adult children - Vickie Lynne has 5 (one set of triplets) and I have 4 (one set of twins). Ironically the triplets and the twins share the same birthday - March 16. My mother lived with us at Windward until her death in September 2010. Vickie Lynne's dad lived with us here at Windward until his death in August of 2011. I am a family physician and have been in practice since 1984. Vickie Lynne is a family nurse practitioner. We have the joy of practicing together. We attend Ware Episcopal Church. We love living on Ferry Creek - it is more than majical. Our daughter Katie, one of the triplets, manages the property for us.
Joe Leming purchased this cottage in 2008
Why Joe Leming chose Gloucester
Windward Cottage is located on Ferry Creek in the Piney Point Subdivision in Gloucester, VA. All of Piney Point was once owned by Jeff Callis who married Etta Dutton and lived at Elm Bank in Piney Point - just a few footsteps down the lane from Windward and Windward Cottage. Etta Dutton was my grandmother's favorite Cousin and my mother's family (who lived on nearby Freewelcome Farm) were frequent visitors to Elm Bank and the Callis household. Fast forward - Vickie Lynne's father and mother 1st purchased another house on Ferry Creek in 1967 (Ferry's Landing). They sold that house to Vickie Lynne's mother's cousin in 1971 and purchased Windward, established in 1971. Vickie Lynne and her family have lived at Windward full-time since 1998. Vickie Lynne and I were married April 30th, 2011. Hence, as my Uncle Alex once said 'we are living on old family land.' In 2008, through a twist of fate, the cottage juxtaposed to Windward became available and we bought it. We have renovated the house, put a new roof on, added central heat and air conditioning, improved the kitchen and bathroom and added high-speed internet/CableTV and phone, painted and installed new carpet and kitchen flooring. When our parents were living with us - Vickie Lynne and I used Windward Cottage as our personal escape. Now we use it for our guests. In 2012 we were fortunate enough to purchase Ferry's Landing back from Vickie Lynne's cousin. It is presently undergoing extensive renovations.
What makes this cottage unique
For those who have seen and appreciated the movie 'On Golden Pond' - Ferry Creek is even better. The eco-system is unbelievable. Year round we have bald eagles; in the summer months (March through September) we have the Osprey's to watch circling overhead and snatching fish from the creek. The high pitched 'cheep cheep' of the Ospreys is constant. This past year we put an Osprey Nest platform on an old piling in front of the Cottage and watched our 1st Osprey pair build their 1st nest. We daily watch the commercial crabbers fish their crab pots. We can fish or crab off the pier. We can kayak up into the marshes of the mouth of the creek or we can be in the channel of the Piankatank River in 1/4 mile. Windward Cottage faces west - so we get the most spectacular sunset views. In the winter we have ducks and geese in the creek. Ferry Creek is a miraculous and wonderful place. Come, see for yourself and enjoy. We live next door at Windward.
