Varenna dates back to the Western Roman Empire and was historically mentioned by Corius in the history of Milan as far back as 493AD. The first definite reference for its existence was by the Deacon Grato of Monza in 769AD but its true history began after 1000AD when the Island of Conancina was destroyed in 1169 and the refugees took shelter there.
The locals welcomed them, the population & prosperity of the medieval town flourished and to this day, the towns charm & well preserved history with its cobbled streets & pretty houses, really is everyone's favourite place to visit.
Other Activities: Sailing, hiking
Golf: The world famous Menaggio and Cadenabblia Golf Club is positioned on the hillside above Menaggio which is only a 15 min ferry ride across the lake. We recommend the Club House restaurant - absolutely delicious!
Ski: Skiing in the area is bountiful with resorts such as Madesimo 1.15 hours to the north and the local ski resorts of Piani di Bobbio & Pien della Betulla, only 40 - 50 minutes away. For an exciting day trip any time of year, why not go on the beautiful drive, through the Alps, to the international jet-set resort of St. Moritz, only 1.5 hours by car.
