Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday castle in Domme - Chateau Peyruzel
13th century medieval château perfect for families & couples travelling together

**As featured in USA 'Country French' magazine Fall/Winter 2012. Sitting high on a hilltop between the villages of Domme and Castelnaud, Château Peyruzel is an amazing 13th century Medieval Castle and officially-listed Historical Monument. Now it has opened its doors for your special holiday experience.

Carved from the bedrock of the hill in 1250, this perfectly-restored mansion stands on 10 acres, guarding over the pristine valley below. With stunning views from every window of its four towers, this magnificent home has 5 BEDROOMS and many beautifully designed public rooms - offering the best in modern luxuries within its ancient stone walls. With antiques and impeccable décor, along with an unbelievable spiral stone staircase, Peyruzel is an amazing, high-end property for couples traveling together, or a family group celebrating a special event. Weddings and anniversaries are perfectly located here in the unparalleled medieval walled garden, or the stone barn, and your guests will thank you forever. As a 'hosted villa', we can arrange for chef's dinners, tours, wine trips and anything that you'd need.

Who is the chateau best for?: The château is absolutely ideal for 4 or 5 couples travelling together (where everyone has a large double room), or for a multi-generation family get-together or special occasion. If you're considering an anniversary or a wedding, let us and know and we'd be happy to help you.

The château sleeps 12 in bedrooms (we can add one or 2 roll-away beds to any of the large bedrooms if there is a need). There are 4.5 bathrooms and 6 toilets.

See more photos on our website: www.chateaupeyruzel.com

On the first two floors are the PUBLIC ROOMS:

- a brand new, entirely-modern kitchen with microwave and dishwasher as well as professional stove;

- the magnificent “Salle a Manger” (dining room) with open stone fireplace;

- the huge “Salon” (living room) with its stone fireplace and door to terraces and a medieval, walled garden;

- a Library complete with satellite TV/DVD and wifi;

- a cosy Reception room for breakfast, lunch or a glass of wine before dinner that acts as a second kitchen.

The TOP TWO FLOORS contain the private rooms, and are home to FIVE DOUBLE BEDROOMS, and 4 full bathrooms plus 2 extra separate toilets. The master bedroom, with its incredible four poster bed and medieval stone sink and massive fireplace is just one of the incredible bedrooms with beautiful furnishings. Stunning views abound from the ceiling-high windows as you gaze through the massive stone walls to the valleys below.

With so many areas for outdoor living, and multiple terraces, there is no end to where and how you can enjoy meals outdoors. The best outdoor area is the pool-house and pool area where dinners and long evenings are favorites with our guests. This hilltop haven also includes a private forest.

Château Peyruzel is a historical monument which sits high above the valley of the Ceou - a tributary of the Dordogne. Just a few kilometres from Castelnaud and Beynac to the north west, and Domme and Sarlat to the north-east, it surveys the valley with a 320 degree view from Domme to Gramat. Only 1hr 15 min to Bergerac Airport, or 2 hours drive from Toulouse, 2.5 hr from Bordeaux, 7 hours from Paris, and 15 minutes from Gourdon (with a train service from Paris), it's easily reachable by plane, train and car.

In the heart of the Perigord Noir, the château is within easy reach of the famous caves in Montignac & Les Eyzies (25 min), the ancient villages of Domme (5 min), famous châteaux of Castelnaud (5min), Beynac (10 min), and the town of Sarlat (15 min) with its medieval buildings and famous market. Amazing gardens of Marquessac and Eyrignac are also close-by. But most importantly, the château is a historical destination in itself as it's featured in many guide books.

Other Activities: Wine-tasting, antique-shopping, hiking

Golf: There are 2 golf courses within 30 minutes drive - one 9 hole course at Domaine Rochebois and an 18 hole course at Lolivarie.

Notes: There is a large, spiral, stone medieval staircase that ascends 5 floors. For this reason, children under 8 (approximately) would need to be supervised due to the nature of the stairs which only have a rope, and no bannister. The house is also filled with antiques and high-end luxury furnishings, and for the reason of the stairs and the furnishings, it would be the responsibility of the parents to CLOSELY monitor their young children. However, it is for the parents to make the judgement as to whether this accommodation is appropriate for their children. Babies in arms are not an issue and we provide cots/cribs and a high chair for these young guests. We offer a housekeeper once a week for 4 hours, more can be added. Chef available to cook for you at the château. Bicycles are available for rental from a company that delivers and picks up the bicycles at no charge. They have all kinds of bicycles for all ages and these can be reserved (ahead of time) and delivered to the château

One of the best holidays ever!

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 18 April 2013 Date of Stay: June 2012
We had hoped that our 2 week French countryside family holiday/reunion would be the "dream" we had planned - but our stay at Chateau Peyruzel far exceeded our expectations. From the pre-trip planning where we were well-supplied with tons of information from travel tips to a whole host of activities - including bike rentals and a chef dinner arranged for us by Janice - to the actual holiday, it was the trip of a lifetime! The castle was a dream with a wonderful blend of antique and comfy furnishings (especially good beds!) it is so well-equipped with everything you could want for a good rest and fun time with our family group of 1 from different parts of the globe. From lazy days at the pool to canoe trips on the Dordogne, we explored this incredible area of France with the chateau perfectly located near all the most impressive sites and activities. Highlights were the local markets within easy reach, riding into the nearby villages on our bikes for morning croissants, and just hanging at the castle - which is in perfect condition - imagining what it was like living in the 1200's when it was built (although we were happy to have all the 'mod-cons' like wifi, coffee-makers, microwaves, washer & dryer, dishwashers etc!). The kids loved it, especially the pool area, as did all the adults, and with Janice's organization and help, we will certainly be back for more! In fact after this happy experience, we're planning a trip with a smaller group of 4 to another one of her stunning properties in a nearby market village.

Our Fabulous Stay at Chateau Payruzel in July 2009

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 24 August 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
When I and my husband drove thru the gates of Chateau Peyruzel and entered its grounds, it took my breath away. It was truly my dream of a French country chateau experience come true. Our family and friends that joined us were very happy that we'd found the perfect destination for our multi-generation get-together.

Outside: Originally built as a fortress in the 13th century, its stunning hilltop site is striking both as one approaches from the valley below, and once there, as one gazes out from the manicured grounds to the charming village of Daglan, the hills, and bucolic farmlands, not to mention the exquis ite sunsets. The pool, although recently added, was stunning in that it fits so seamlessly into the extensive grounds and the covered pool house was the best spot to linger at the end of the day with a glass of wine.

Inside; The owners have lovingly restored, appointed, and furnished the interior with exquisite taste and French style. There is no doubt what country you are in, and its beauty. Looking at the photos on the website, as impressive as they are, they do not do justice to the look and feel that one actually experiences20within those walls. In addition, on arrival, everything was pristine and wonderfully clean and perfectly prepared. We were happy to sink into the beautiful beds after our long trip!

The owners prepared us with everything we could possibly have needed before we arrived: maps, directions, what we needed to bring, where we could shop and what was within easy reach. Once in the chateau, there was further information about local sites and very personal directions for everything we were interested in seeing: chateaux, wineries, beautiful gardens. Janice (the owner) also arranged for a meal cooked in the chateau by a local chef (our favorite meal), as well as making reservations for us in other local restaurants. Her local knowledge and personal attention provided us with a completely different experience than if we had been tourists.

I would recommend this “dream come true” Chateau without reservation, and hope to return there myself for another unbelievable escape into paradise. Imagine being inside a medieval castle, but with all the comforts and finest amenities of our 21st century. Magnifique!

It is an ideal, elegant site for family reunions, for an adventure with friends, or perhaps an anniversary or wedding.

It is a place I will never forget.

A Magical Holiday

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 16 August 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Staying at the Chateau this summer was a truly magical experience. It was indeed a privilege to spend such a wonderful few weeks in such a magnificent home and such spectacular surroundings. The chateau exceeded all our expectations and we will definitely be back as it was perfect for all our family and friends with their different demands - everyone was thrilled - from those for whom beautiful linen and tasteful decor was essential to those who were looking for lazy days at the pool and those among us who wanted to get out and discover the countryside - the chateau was perfectly positioned and really had it all. I particularly loved the experience of staying in an authentic chateau which was so beautifully appointed that the wow factor seemed to renew itself every day. The views from the windows, the magnificent stone staircase, the luxurious bedrooms and sitting rooms - what a fabulous experience. The owners have managed to strike a rare balance of an exceptionally high standard while allowing you also to feel very much at home - so much so that we never wanted to leave. Endless summer evenings outdoors - dinner en plein air most nights - superbe! Thank you.

Dream holiday at the Chateau

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 11 August 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
The Dordogne is by far my favourite area in Southwest France. The land surrounding the chateau is naturally exquisite with rich farmland and rolling hills. There is lots to do and see in the area. Kayaking down the Dordogne was a highlight, as was eating at the many world class restaurants in the different villages. I spent my summer vacation at the breathtaking chateau in Domme. It is beautifully decorated with fantastic furniture, artwork and stunning curtains. The beds are particularly comfortable all lined with crisp French linen. The large dining room is perfect for entertaining friends and family over dinner. The mornings are best spent eating croissants and drinking coffee overlooking the beautiful medieval garden. The pool house is made of stone and is covered from the warm sun. The afternoons are best spent relaxing on the sun loungers and reading by the large exquisite pool. The chateau is equipped with everything you may possibly need during your stay. In the evening, the pool house provides an excellent viewpoint to watch the sunset whilst enjoying some of the finest wine from the nearby vineyards. The owners provide excellent planning, directions and information needed to fully explore the area. The photographs on the website provide only a snapshot of the property's beauty!
