Perfect for the short term traveler, extended stays (over a month) are available, too. This beautiful newly remodeled, 750 sq.ft. one bedroom apartment has all new furnishings and better than hotel quality details. Private separate entrance on the ground floor. One bedroom with queen sized bed, all new bedding & new premium mattress. Apartment can accomodate up to 4 people, but it is best for single person, a couple, or a family. Free wi-fi Internet, flat panel TV with free cable, office/den in apartment with FAX/copier. Full bathroom includes washer & dryer, hair dryer, shampoo & conditioner. Fully equipped kitchen with all dishes, pots & pans, cooking utensils, basic spices, etc. Morning coffee is provided. It is conveniently located near the University of Alaska Fairbanks, (3 miles), and 8 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from shopping.
The view from the window is a mix of spruce, birch and aspen trees. Flower gardens, including iris and lilacs, and a vegetable garden are on the property. In the Summer, we are close to the botanical garden at UAF, and in the Winter, if the auroras are out, they are very likely to be seen right over our house, with no city light pollution to dilute them.
Les & Carol Smallwood, have been residents in Fairbanks, Alaska, for over 23 years. This home you'd be staying at has been built by Les. The year purchased just indicates the year we purchased the piece of land it sits on. Located among aspen and spruce trees, the apartment suite is on the lower lever and was just remodeled. We have two dogs and one cat, (all friendly and will not bother you), we love our location and privacy and hope you'll consider staying with us. We look forward to making your stay memorable.
Carol or Les Smallwood purchased this apartment in 1991
This piece of property is a total of 2.5 acres that was purchased by Les Smallwood in 1991, and then he began the process of clearing the woods and building the house you see today on it. We picked this part of town because it is near the University, doesn't have a lot of commercial business cluttering and hiding the natural beauty of the area, it is private and quiet, and it is still very close and convenient to everything in town. It is also located within the best schools' districts in the city, ensuring that our kids would go to the best public schools available.
Living with woods all around means privacy, and that you may get visits from the local moose. The air is fresh, and the water tastes good right out of the faucet, no filtering needed. If you are here in the Summer, the days are long and beautiful. In the Winter, the auroras are clear and strong, without any city light pollution.
Finally got to go to Fairbanks. Life long dream. If you get a chance to stay in Fairbanks, you must look into staying here. Les and Carol are absolutely some of the best people I have ever met! The apartment was like home. Everything was comfortable. More than comfortable. When I travel, I normally have a hard time sleeping and just being comfortable. But this place was like being in my own bed. I cannot say one bad thing about it. Way more than I had expected. There was snow and ice on the roads the whole time I was there and Les made sure the driveway and parking was maintained everyday. Les and Carol were always making sure everything was good for me. Les took me to the ice carving show one evening which I had planned to do anyway, but it was sure nice to have the company. It was like having my own personal tour guide. Then we went up to Ester Dome and he showed me the Aurora. It was not very strong that night but Les definitely showed me what to look for and I saw it several times on my own a few days after that. Simply amazing!!! Les and Carol can and will suggest any thing that you may find of interest. The drives and sights that they suggested are permanently embedded in my mind now. No place like I have ever been. Karina and Cooper, (their dogs) came to check on my everyday also. Wonderful, friendly dogs!! If you come to Fairbanks, there are 2 things that you MUST do. One is to make sure you go eat at the Loose Moose Cafe and the other is stay here with Les and Carol! You will not regret either. The month that I was there was the best time of my life. I know that had I stayed in a hotel, my stay would only have been a fraction of what it was. Les and Carol were a huge part of my stay being as great as it was and I can't thank them enough and so glad that I can now call them friends.
-Carol & Les were responsive, friendly, helpful, and accessible, but never intrusive
-The home is cheerfully but tastefully decorated so you feel comfortable in your surroundings -- and the Christmas lights outside really made it extra pretty
-The queen-sized bed has a nice, flat, firm mattress
-Spacious rooms with plenty of closet and dresser space for you to spread out and unpack
-Excellent water pressure for hot showers to warm you up after a night of aurora-chasing
-The best stocked kitchen I've ever seen in a vacation rental, with stainless steel cookware and a good selection of cookie sheets and baking dishes, and a full-sized range, oven, microwave, and fridge/freezer
-A week's worth of coffee and tea were kindly provided
-Beautiful, perfectly sized flat-panel TV with cable TiVo in living room
-Reliable WiFi, and good cell service (both AT&T & Verizon)
-Washer/dryer in the bathroom worked well and were very convenient since all that wool clothing is prohibitively bulky and we couldn't pack nearly enough for our week-long stay
-You really do have an excellent view of the aurora right from the yard/driveway if they get up high enough in the sky -- and other locations for viewing the lights are within easy distance
-The home is in an excellent location close to the amenities of Fairbanks as well as the airport.
-The owners maintain the driveway well in snowy conditions so it's safe and easy to get in and out
-The owners live upstairs and while they were very quiet and courteous we could hear the tap-tap-tap of their doggies' feet. This didn't bother us in the least, but light sleepers or people who want to feel truly isolated, take note.
-The water pressure is SO excellent that you might want to back it off when you take a shower so there's hot water left for your spouse. ;-)
-I didn't want to ever leave.
Thanks, Carol & Les, for a beautiful stay in your beautiful home. We had a truly wonderful vacation!
We just returned home after our long awaited winter vacation under the northern lights. Over the years, we have stayed in many VRBO properties and have always had good experiences. Our 5 night stay here with Les and Carol continued our good fortune. The property is located just far enough from town to feel lost in the wilderness, but it is close enough to be convenient to all the necessities.
Les and Carol have built their beautiful home from bare land to a most accommodating home for them and vacation rental for the rest of us to enjoy. The rental is clean, comfortable, cozy and it was easy to relax and enjoy our time, even when the weather was bad and we were iced in. Their property is beautiful and it was breathtaking to see the snow falling on the treetops, and being from northern Ca. it was an adventure to take long walks in the snow.
Les and Carol are warm, friendly people who are totally suited to making strangers feel welcome. Even before we got there, while our trip was still in the planning stages, Carol and I shared several phone calls and e mails and she was instrumental in helping me plan the details of our adventure. During our stay, we spend many hours with Les and Carol sharing stories and developing a friendship. Together, we shared one incredible night enjoying a spectacular aurora show. Les has been a professional photographer, so he taught me all the tricks and features of my camera and helped my husband and I get some great aurora photos. Carol is a fabric artist, and if you ask her to share, she just might show you some of her beautiful creations.
We truly enjoyed our stay with Les and Carol and highly recommend their VRBO property. We are seriously thinking about returning in the near future
WE REALLY ENJOYED STAYING AT THIS BEAUTIFUL A FRAME NESTLED IN THE WOODS. LOCATED NOT FAR FROM TOWN. THE HOSTS LES AND CAROL WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE SURE WE WERE COMFORTABLE. THEY ARE A VERY FRIENDLY COUPLE. THE DOGS ARE ALSO VERY SWEET. WE ENJOYED THE MUSEUMS, UNIVERSITY BOTANICAL GARDENS, ESTER DOME (AURORA VIEWING), CREAMERS BIRD SANCTURARY, ANTIQUE AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM, MOOSE, REINDEER, MUSK OX, CITY PARKS, SALMON, ETC. WE ENJOYED COOKING IN THE EVENINGS, AS THE APT. IS VERY WELL EQUIPPED.WE WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PROPERTY TO ANYONE.
What a wonderful location for our Fairbanks Adventure. The property is nestled in a wonderful wooded setting. The listing is totally accurate and the pictures truly represent the property. We were comfortable right from the start. It was great to have a washer and dryer included at this location. The owner was available and provided information on sites to visit and places to eat too. We would certainly return to this property if we visit Fairbanks, AK again.
My husband and I spent ten nights at this apartment and would definitely return! Located in a quiet, beautiful wooded setting, yet minutes from Fairbanks, this immaculate rental is exactly as described. But pictures can't show how comfortable the bed is - so please believe me, it's great! The open floor plan in the living area feels very spacious and the bonus space in the offfice is nice for spreading out and storing luggage. The kitchen is well equipped with quality pots and pans, everything clean. I especially enjoyed all the beautiful flowers, strolling around the garden and visiting the greenhouse.
Owners Carol and Les could not be more attentive or helpful. They truly care about their guests. We are so thankful that we chose to stay here!
We are located near the University of Alaska Fairbanks, on the west side of town, only 8 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from shopping, yet still secluded, private wooded setting. In the Summer, we are very close to the botanical garden, and the UAF Large Animal Research station with musk ox and caribou, (reindeer). In the Winter, the auroras can be seen going right over our house!
