Located near the quaint little town of Wise River, Montana, Cliff Haven on Jerry Creek offers just about anything you could want in a Montana getaway. We built our home at Cliff Haven 25 years ago and we still love to spend time here on Jerry Creek although we are no longer living here year around. We spend time during the summer traveling to B.C. and we travel to Arizona in the winter, so this allows us to share our home with discriminating guests like you!
Why do we love this place so much? Well, we Love outdoor sports and especially fly fishing! We have fished literally all over Montana in our almost 35 years as Montana residents. Most importantly, we could have chosen anywhere in Montana to live, but we chose this area of the Big Hole River because in our humble view it offers simply the very best that Montana has to offer.
The Big Hole River just a mile down the road from us is one of the most unique and delightful rivers not only in Montana but in the entire U.S.A. Elevated to legendary status by sports publications in the 1950's, the Big Hole became one of the most popular and important destinations in the west. The many photographs of trophy Brown Trout in the 5 pound plus class which surfaced at the time literally insured the legend of the Big Hole. Those browns are still availabe today in ample numbers especially in the waters near our home on Jerry Creek.
But large numbers of trophy trout are only one of the attractions. Throughout its reach the Big Hole offers a variety of unique attractions. Every type of fly water and challenge is available fo the fly fisher from the pastoral upper river to the many riffles and boulder strewn runs throughout the massive Big Hole Valley, and then on to the deep 'big fish' canyons flushing out onto the agricultural lands on the river's downstream stretches.
One of the most rewarding characteristics of the Big Hole is the large variety of fish that can be caught. The Big Hole is the ONLY river in the lower 48 states where fluvial arctic greyling are native and can also be caught on the fly. I have had days on the Big Hole where I have caught tremendous browns and rainbows, enviable brook trout, then cutthroat and finally arctic greyling. That is known as a true grand slam, and a truly amazing, uplifting day of fishing! And, the Big Hole is the only place where it can happen!!
Delightful little Jerry Creek runs right through our property. Not only does it create a wonderful atmosphere, it is full of 10 to 16 inch rainbows, rainbow/cutthroat crosses, and pure cutthroat with a smattering of brook trout as well. Jerry Creek itself is tremendous fun yet challenging fishing.
Finally, for the fly fishing enthusiast, In addition to the phenomenal waters of the Big Hole, there are many 'blue ribbon' and trophy streams available within a short distance from our home at Cliff Haven on Jerry Creek. The Beaverhead, Jefferson, Ruby, Missouri, Rock Creek, Clark Fork, and many other of Montana's great fly fishing waters are all readily accesible for a relaxing and rewarding day trip from our home.
But fishing is not the only attraction! If you are a big game hunter, you are in the heart of it in Wise River country. Fleecer Mountain which can be seen from our deck is home to a 1000 head resident elk herd. Elk are in addition to white tail and mule dear, bears, moose, and goats. If you like to plink at gophers or other varmints, have at it!
In addition to GREAT hunting and fishing, there is hiking, bicycle riding (if you like a 156 mile ride through Wise River and other towns along the Big Hole, you can join the RatPod Ride in June, or just try any of the mountain bike trails around our home on your own), four wheeling, bird watching, photography, wild game viewing, sightseeing, camping, horseback riding, or just kicking back on the deck and watching Jerry Creek flow by. It can't be beat!
In the winter you can cross country ski, snow shoe, snomobile, ice fish, take a winter trek touring through the mountains, or travel to any of the three nearby downhill ski slopes available.
We try to keep our home nice, comfortable, and accommodating. It offers 3 bedrooms and three bathrooms, a den/office equipped with telephone, fax, shredder, and desks for those who just have to do a little work while they are here (we don't recommend it, but we are equipped for it), fireplaces on both floors, sun twin heaters to keep you extra cozy on those deep winter nights, a workout room with free weights, a bow flex machine, a Lifecycle eliptical, and a sauna. And at night, after all the fun and excitement, while sipping your favorite beverage, settle back and relax to a warm massage in our Human Touch massage chair!
We have owned our home here for over 25 years now, and we still enjoy it immensely. We have lived in it year around, so we have begun upgrading and will continue to do so. Our prices will reflect improvements as they are accomplished, so we encourage you to take advantage of the lowest rates now!
We sincerely hope that we have given you a better feel for why we LOVE our home a Cliff Haven on Jerry Creek! We know you will love it too, and we simply ask that you take pride in it, and care of it, like we do!
Thank you, and we very much look forward to hearing from you and to sharing our home in this most amazing part of Montana with you! All the best!!
What can we tell you about us? First, as you may have gathered, we LOVE our home at Cliff Haven on Jerry Creek - and now you know why! :-) We have been married for well over 30 years, and have raised our family here. Through that time, I have been fortunate to fish almost every piece of moving water in Montana. Even more fortunately over that time, I have spent over 1000 days fishing the Big Hole. We love the area, the people, and the opportunities to enjoy this amazing part of Montana. We highly recommend it to you!
Dominic (Dee) and Teresa Carestia purchased this chateau / country house in 1985
This property was our dream. We bought the land first, 80+ acres, from one of our neighbors back in 1985 and proceeded to build our home here. We have beautiful views, we are right on the creek, and this home was designed by my wife. We built a lot of it ourselves, and it continues to provide us with great experiences. We look forward to sharing some of what this place has to offer with you!
What can we say that we haven't already said? Our home is ideally situated in one of the most beautiful places on earth. The rich variety of experiences that truly add to life are just too numerous to mention. One look from our home site to the cliffs above, the mountains downstream, and the beauty and music of Jerry Creek flowing by, and we were sold - and still are!
We stayed at the Cliff Haven home for almost a week. It was convenient for fishing many of the large rivers in the area. The kitchen has everything you could need. The house is large and easily accommodates 6 people. The beds are comfortable. Views are tremendous. One of our favorite things about the house was the openness to the outdoors. Picture windows everywhere, even for viewing the stars at night in the Master Bedroom. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!
This is a wonderful house with a great view and a trout stream close by the house. The stream, Jerry Creek runs down to the Big Hole, one of the best trout rivers in the U.S.
The view from the house is terrific with a long look down the valley and across the Big Hole.
Just up the road, following Jerry Creek upstream, is the start of a national forest with various facilities.
The attractions in this area are endless. If you fish, rockhound, hike, or enjoy settlements from the late nineteenth century, you would be hard pressed to do better than this property.
Our nights were cool and the days were warm. The fishing on the Beaverhead and Big Hole were okay for a slower time of year. Taking a 14" Cutthroat thirty yards from the house on a dry fly an hour before dinner was a high point. It was delicious.
If you have an off-road/rough road vehicle, there is just no end to what you can do in this country.
The owner put me onto my first Arctic Grayling, a lunker for the species. I'm sworn to secrecy as to the exact location but it wasn't a real long drive or too hard a wade. The owner, a great fly fisherman and many of many experiences and interests, will give you all you need to know to enjoy the outdoors here. Personally, I hope he won't take you to the Grayling hole.
The services in the immediate area are somewhat limited. The food in Jerry Creek is surprisingly good and there are modest groceries. The rides to Butte or Dillon for more extensive services are scenic and relatively easy. Dillon is worth a visit just for the wonderful sculpture scattered around town.
This part of Montana is one of the last pieces of heaven left in the U.S. If you go, don't tell too many people about it.
We had such a wonderful and relaxing stay in this beautiful home. We could not have asked for better accommodations. We will definitely stay here again.
My family loved our vacation to this home...thanks for sharing your home with us! We saw all sorts of animals, hiked, went sightseeing, found amazing gems at Crystal Park, and enjoyed the wonderful weather with the sooothing sound of Jerry Creek to help us fall asleep at night.
The fishing at the Big Hole is beyond words...we caught several trout above 20 inches...without even hiring a guide! My son caught his first fish on a fly rod...a beautiful arctic grayling! The people in town and in the fly shops are friendly and very helpful if fishing is your cup of tea.
This property can serve as a prime spot for all ages. My son (10) and daughter (6) were never suffering from a lack of activites and loved the outdoor activities in the area. It was exciting to see them unplug from technology for a few days, even though it was available in the home. They were more content to play outside and watch the prairie dogs in the fields surrounding the home.
If we get the chance, we will most certainly return...it was a vacation that will live in our memories forever!!!
Thanks again for sharing your amazing home...
The accomodations were as advertised--and more! The home was clean and well-maintained with everything needed on hand. The owners were great to work with. Plenty to do nearby---fishing, four-wheeling, hiking and rock-hounding at Crystal Park. We hope to return again!
