Overview

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday bungalow in County Mayo - Bungalow, Rockfleet, Westport

Self catering 3 bedroom bungalow, sleeps 6

This is a beautifully located bungalow situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. This spacious property consists of 3 double bedrooms, 2 large reception rooms, a kitchen, a modern fitted bathroom and an additional shower room. The master bedroom and front living room overlook the ocean and the rear of the property has open rural views stretching to the mountains and the nearby Rockfleet, or Carrickahowley, Castle. A few minutes’ walk along the sea front will take you to this 16th century castle, which was once the home of the Irish pirate queen, Grace O’Malley, or Granuaile. Also within easy walking distance along the sea front is Roigh Pier with a small harbour of local fishing boats. Fishing and sight-seeing trips can be arranged from here. The immediate area provides excellent walking opportunities, including the Furnace lakes, Shramore and Letterkeen forest and the Nephin mountain range. Both stylish and cosy, this bungalow is perfect for couples, families and groups.

Lovely property. Great position.

The owner was always very helpful and quick with responses to any questions we had before our stay.

We were looking for a peaceful off the beaten track location for our holiday and we got it! Looking out of the front windows onto bays and islands was idyllic, with the sea a safe, but exciting, 30 yards from our front door when the tide was in.

Nevins pub, just a couple of miles from the house serves great food at reasonable prices, and to top it all they offered free transport to and from their pub, which we gladly accepted. They had live music from local musicians on a couple of nights on the week we were there, which was also great.

We hired bikes from James, recommended by Nevins, and that also worked out really well. James will deliver and collect the bikes from anywhere you want in the local area, but for a first trip we set off from the house and joined the Greenway (the longest in the UK at 42km?) about 1/4 mile away, and made our way up to Achill Island which was a lovely ride....quite a way though...but you wouldn't have to go so far if you didn't want to - There are a few tea shops and shops on the way. We would recommend Yvonne Café as it was traditional, welcoming but with a sad story to tell. For a second bike trip we had the bikes delivered to the hotel before the bridge that goes to Achill Island, then we set off onto the Island turning left along the Atlantic Drive, which has stunning scenery. Again the maps are good and you can cycle as far as you like.

One of the highlights for us happened after the 2nd cycle ride when we got in our car to tour the rest of Achill Island....during the short trip we spotted a pod of about 20 dolphins frolicking about 70 meters off shore. We watched them for about 1/2 hour, then drove to the end of the Island. On our journey back about 1/2 hour later, we spotted them again about 1km down the coast. We have certainly never seen so many dolphins in that scenario before.

You must take the walk / hike up Croagh Patrick, which is just the other side of Westport - Not for the faint hearted, but having said that there seem to be a lot of 70yrs plus walking along side of us!!!!

Excellent rock pool and crabbing.

Quiet location on the seashore, good size, well equipped kitchen, cosy and comfortable. Prompt and helpful owner. Recommend for families with children - wellies, crablines and buckets provided. Stunning views from the front door. Very close to the Greenway cycle route (15 minutes cycle), midway between Mulranny and Westport. Two mountain bikes available, and options to hire locally. Good range of shops in nearby Newport
Convenient for Croagh Patrick, Furnace Lakes and Achill Island.
1 1/2 hrs drive from Knock Airport.

vacances parfaites

  • 5 out of 5

A superb cottage and location!

  • 5 out of 5
We have stayed in a number of holiday cottages in the UK and Ireland over the past several years, and this ranks near the top. The location is sublime, the cottage is beautifully situated and well equipped, was easy to find, and we were greeted by the owner's representative who was nearby if any problems arose (none did). We would recommend this cottage to anyone visiting the area.

The bungalow was everything it said it would be, and more... We immediately felt at home. We were met by the caretaker for the house. She was welcoming, warm and friendly. She is a wealth of knowledge for the area and was available any time we had questions. The history of the area and the beauty of the location were awesome. We varied our stay alternating visiting local areas like Achill Island , Mulranney, Westport, Croagh Patrick, the Foxford Woolen Mills, Ballintuber Abbey, and longer trips to Belleek, The Burren, Doolin and Connemara. all making for a good day journey exploring Ireland. I would definitely recommend this beautiful house. In fact we are talking about renting is next year.

A Perfect Holiday Cottage

  • 5 out of 5
Our two-week sojourn in this Rockfleet cottage was delightful. The house was spacious and well equipped. The front living room and rear den were both large rooms with comfortable furniture and wonderfully large windows and/or sliding doors to provide light. The front parlor looks onto a gorgeous cove of Clew Bay; the rear affords a view of green fields, where sheep are pastured. We cooked in the kitchen on a daily basis and found it a pleasure to use. The bedrooms and front bathroom were newly renovated, providing first-class accommodation. The cottage's contact person, who lived up the road, was not only solicitous and cordial but also an excellent housecleaner. In sum, this rental was a gem.

The surrounding area was no less disappointing. The hamlet of Rockfleet is picturesque and offers all kinds of opportunities for swimming, fishing, boating, and other water sports, but we mostly enjoyed walking the many footpaths around Clew Bay. (Biking is popular in this area.) Touring Achill Island and other destinations in County Mayo, whose scenery is breathtaking, provides a wealth of choice for day trips. The nearby town of Newport has shops and pubs to enjoy (though no bank!) and the bustling city Westport has much charm. This quiet, well-appointed bungalow and its surrounding region offers the visitor a versatile combination of relaxation and activity.

I highly recommend this bungalow to others. In fact, it is my firm intention to rent this cottage again.
