Photos and Description of this 10 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Royan area - Chateau de la Place
10 bedrooms, pretty walled garden, 25 mins sandy beaches, tennis courts nearby
This beautiful 19th century château is situated in the pretty village of Saint-Fort just 25 minutes from blue-flag sandy beaches. The village is surrounded by vineyards and the views from the roof terrace are amazing, especially at night when the Romanesque village church is illuminated. The village has a bar, bakers and general store, plus a twice-weekly market in the village square. The south-facing walled garden has: heated pool, hot tub, boules pitch, table tennis table, BBQ, outdoor table/chairs, plenty of place to sit in the sun or shade. Inside there is: kitchen, dining room, 2 living rooms (satellite TV, DVD player (selection of DVDs), CD/ipod player, bar billiard table), a library and a play station room with lots of games for children. In the cellar: table tennis, table football plus laundry room. First floor: 3 king-sized bedrooms, 2 twins plus 3 bathrooms. Second floor: one quadruple room with TV/video, 2 king-sized, 2 twins, 2 bathrooms. Tennis courts 2 mins.
The chateau is great for groups of friends or family wishing to holiday together. Last year our guests celebrated a 40th birthday, a 50th wedding anniversary and 25 year school reunion and there were two beautiful weddings in the autumn. This year we have a group of friends travelling out there with a French teacher for a week of sun, relaxing and language learning. From this year, sculpture weeks will be run at different times of the year. It is a great house to relax in, with plenty of space: our favourite room is the library (stocked with 1000s of books) and our favourite place is the roof terrace for a glass of wine as the sun sets over the vineyards - you could be no where else but rural France. (Our kids, of course, prefer the heated pool and hot tub - it's difficult to get them out!) You can go wine and cognac tasting in the next village, cycle down to the port at Mortagne (5 miles) for a beer/pizza by the boats, visit the Roman amphitheatre at Saintes, the charming medieval town of St Emilion and take a train round the vineyards, go into the centre of buzzing and cosmopolitan Bordeaux (which looks amazing after all the renovation work of the last ten years), visit La Rochelle and shop while the children are enthralled at the Aquarium and spend a few hours on the beaches at St Palais (our favourite), Royan, Saint Georges or Meschers (the beach cafe/restaurant at Plage de Suzac is excellent value) and before you know it the week is over and it's time to come home. No wonder that all, bar one, of our bookings for 2012 (as of January 2012) are rebooks - guests who are returning for a second /third time.

Guestbook comments from the owner
This was our 10th holiday as this group and Chateau de la Place is far and away our favourite property. Sadly as our eldest daughter will be in year 10 next year we are not able to return for a third time in May 2015. Wherever we go next will have a hard act to follow.
We found everything to be terrific again. Lovely new cooker. Enjoyed two lovely meals in L'Amical, quite unfazed by 12 children including 1 with quite serious food allergies.
