Off the beaten track, in a quiet valley close to Florence but overlooked by the casual tourist , due to the lack of motorway, the town of Poppi commands a central positiion in the Casentino ( the “enclosed valley”), where Dante Alighieri lived wrote and fought . Poppi Castello holds an impressive collection of 25,000 books and manuscripts as well as a description of the battle between the Guelfs and the Ghibelines. Ancient castles and churches and monasteries including , St Eremo and La Verna ( St Francis of Assiss lived here) are worth visiting. In the sweet chestnut forests of Camaldoli one can buy local monastery honey and soap and walk in the cool fresh air of the National Forest. Golf in Poppi, antique fairs in Arezzo and small village celebrations and fireworks all summer in the valley. Visit works by Perro della Francesca,Vasari, Della Robbia, spend a hot day in Firenxze and recover with a swim in the Arno, riding ,a bike ride or just try the local produce and wine.
