Disappointing holiday

We spent two weeks at Casa Muller in July 2010 - our first visit to Portugal. The house is as describe in the schedule, although the furniture etc is quite shabby, and it is quite cramped, but the garden is lovely. The owners are very friendly and helpful...we had various problems with appliances, and these were fixed quickly. However, for english-speaking visitors, it should be pointed out that since the owners are German, all channels on the satellite TV are german...we could watch the weather foreast for Baden- Baden, but not for Colares. The local beach is beautiful, as is Guincho beach closer to Cascais. We unfortunately found that the villa is almost in a small microclmate...clouds rolled in from the Atlantic, and seemed to get trapped by the surrounding hills, not dispersing for days.It was actually quite chilly!! If we travelled a few kilometres towards Sintra or Cascais, as we got away from the area, the weather improved and it was hot and sunny. But since our idea had been to spend time relaxing at the villa and praia Adraga, the weather was a major problem. (Of course this was last year, and who knows, it may not occur again.) Another downside was that because of the weather, it was also very windy, so much so that the red flag was often flying at the beach. It had a yellow flag on better days, but never a green one. Our children had hoped to do some body-boarding, but were unable to, since the lifeguards were, rightly, very vigilant and would not let anyone in the sea. We saw a well-built man swept off his feet in ankle-deep water as the under-tow is so strong.
On a more positive note, Sintra itself was lovely, with lots of monuments to visit. Not appealing for most teenagers though! And Cascais is a resort with quite a lot going on, I imagine. And the local seafood was great!
Sadly I would not be able to recommend this area to a friend, as we really did not enjoy our holiday much, however the property would be okay if you aren't too fussy about the weather, and there were only two people staying.
