The West Country / Dorset region

Dorset's attractions are the mild climate, golden sandy beaches, beautiful coastline and countryside. It's weather is favourable, Dorset having amongst the most sunshine hours per year in the UK.

There are the dramatic ruins of Corfe Castle (National Trust), the Swanage Steam Railway, the long sandy beaches of Studland and the fascinating Sandbanks Chain Ferry (single car crossing approx £3) within a short distance. Treat yourself to tea at The Haven Hotel with its consevatory overlooking the entrance to Poole Harbour and the chain ferry.

Spend some time on the beaches of Sandbanks Peninsula, Poole, famous for having some of the most expensive properties in the world. Drop into Jazzy's Cafe (Shore Road) on a Sunday morning and read the papers and people-watch. Harriet's Restaurant (Lilliput, Poole) can be for a special occasion. See the Fireworks Display Thursdays 10pm at Poole Quay.

For those interested in watersports, there is windsurfing tuition available at Whitley Bay, Sandbanks; sailing tuition at Rockley Watersports, Hamworthy, Poole; scuba diving off Swanage and sea fishing trips from Poole Harbour.

Water-skiing, wakeboarding and parasurfing also take place in Poole harbour. Mountain biking is a popular activity in the nearby Purbeck Hills.

Thomas Hardy based his many novels, eg The Mayor of Casterbridge, in Wessex - the Dorset countryside. An interesting read before bedtime!
