This unique, luxurious, well equipped cortijo is in an area of outstanding natural beauty with simply stunning views over Lake Vinuela, the surrounding mountains and olive groves. The luxury living areas provide space in which to relax and all bedrooms are comfortably furnished and all have A/C.For winter lets, enjoy the wood stove. The terrace overlooks the stunning unique luxury swimming pool and Lake Vinuela.

The cortijo is on a hillside surrounded by olive trees overlooking Lake Vinuela and the Sierra Tejada. The cortijo is 2.5km from the main road. Lake Vinuela is one of Andalucia’s best kept secrets but is unspoilt by tourism. The Lake is a reservoir and is also used for sailing, wind-surfing and fishing. There are no motorised boats allowed thus ensuring tranquillity. There are two excellent 18 hole golf courses nearby, Bavaria Golf (25 mins away) and Club Anorets (25 mins away). You may also enjoy skiing in the Sierra Nevada in the winter season which is only 1.45 hrs drive away. The season can be open from November to May depending on weather conditions.

The nearest beach resort is the typically Spanish resort of Torre de Mar just over 15 mins away. A wide promenade runs alongside its sandy beaches to the marina at Caleta. There are many small beaches along the coast line towards the busier resort of Nerja to enjoy. Nerja, with its famous caves, is 25 minutes away. Make a day of it and stop and have a paella or fresh fish lunch in the typical “chiringitos” or beach huts. Nearby is a fabulous shopping complex, El Ingenio with a hypermarket, Eroski, where you can buy all your necessities. Don’t forget to stop at their amazing fresh fish and sea-food counter! There are also numerous varied shops for all interests, a cinema, restaurants and tapas bars. Also nearby is a large water park and a go kart track. The busier resorts of Marbella and Fuengirola are less then 1 hour away. The local village of La Vinuela, 15 kms away, has a small supermarket and a choice of bars as does Puente Don Manuel, 10kms away, where you may buy supplies.

All around the property are paths leading to some glorious walks through unspoilt countryside. On the opposite side of the lake is the National Park which is widely used by walkers and ramblers and is renowned as being the best walking area in Spain. The white-washed mountain villages are well worth a visit to see the real Andalucía. Take time to look into the dates of the local “ferias” or festivals, in the surrounding villages. What better way to soak up the local culture. The villa is located within easy driving distance of Nerja and other towns like Malaga, Seville, and Granada, where you can take in the beauty and architecture of the Alhambra Palace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have recently returned from a weeks holiday at the Cortijo de las Carretas with friends. When we arrived we were met by June who was extremely helpful and informative (even though we were a bit early!), the cortijo was everything we could have hoped for, beautifully furnished, very spacious and comfortable, outside the garden and the pool were lovely, the terrace providing a great outdoor living area for those hot days and warm evenings. We must thank Maurice and Kate for answering our numerous questions regarding the property and supplying a super guest book with lots of useful information prior to our holiday which allowed us to plan our week beforehand. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property to other holidaymakers looking for a private and well equipped property, you would have to go a long way to better it! Sue and Ken Evans.

Wonderful house - alojar esplendido!

  • 5 out of 5
We rent villas and houses very frequently, and all too often the descriptions of a house don't exactly match the reality. On this occasion it's the very opposite. Cortijo de las Carretas is located on a promontory overlooking Lake Vinuela but with true 360 degrees views across a breathtaking panorama, just as we were promised.
Our first impressions set the tone for what proved to be a superb holiday. The sturdy oak front door leads into a wonderfully peaceful courtyard, very Moorish in feel, with the sound of a lapping water feature adding to the atmosphere of calmness and coolness. Beyond this is the house itself, with a marvellous double-height lounge and mezzanine floor. Both this and the large and very well equipped kitchen open onto an extensive shaded terrace overlooking a substantial oval pool and the adjoining garden, all of it overlooking the lake and mountains. The air-conditioned bedrooms and adjoining bathrooms all have great views as well. Add to this the first class technology, from flatscreen tv to broadband internet and hi-fi music system and you have an all-weather holiday home - not that one has to worry about the weather for most of the year! Clearly very considerable thought has gone into the design and quality of the cortijo which was build only five or so years ago.

While the cortijo is located in a rural setting, there are numerous houses in the area, all well set apart, and local facilities are only a short drive and about 20 minutes away are the extensive services and facilities of Velez de Malaga and the coast. We did not visit local restaurants, but there appeared to be plenty around - some no more than a few minutes drive. The area itself was a revelation. We have usually rented houses further afield, in La Herradura, in the Alpujarras or around Antequera, but this is an area we had not visited previously and is now high on our list for the future.

Finally, and very importantly, the owners were a model of professional attention making sure that we were well looked after and keen to learn from our experiences.

We would have no hesitation whatsoever both in recommending Cortijo de las Carretas to any of our friends, but also returning there ourselves as soon as possible !

Absolutley Brilliant!

The Cortijo is a stunning location to spend your holiday!

My party consisted of two families - four adults and four children in total. The Cortijo was huge and the layout, from the courtyard to the mezzanine to the outdoor balconies, was fantastic, meaning there was plenty of space for us all with lots of separate areas to chill and spend some time on your own if needed.

The outdoor areas are fantastic too, with a lovely sized pool and plenty of seating. We spent our whole holiday here as it was so nice, despite having plans to travel beforehand! The outdoor fridge was a blessing too giving us much needed space for the alcohol supplies!

The outdoor areas are safe for children also as all doors leading out are child locked.

My two year old was well catered for with a cot, high chair and stair gates all provided - providing me with complete peace of mind for our stay.

The Cortijo is fully equiped and the kitchen has everything for preparing and serving large meals for all, the BBQ is really good too and was used frequently!

The location overlooking Lake Vinuela is stunning and we spent lots of time watching the sea planes landing and taking off practising their fire extinguishing techniques.

Everywhere you look from the Cortijo there is an amazing view - whether it be sunset from the front steps with a bottle of red or watching from the balcony as the lake changes colour as the sun rises.

A hire car is essential as the nearest market is about 10 mins drive but the nearest supermarket is about 25 mins away in Velez Malaga.

A trip to the nearby El Charco (Miguels) restaurant in Los Romanes is highly recommended as it serves the best steaks ever and the staff really look after you.

The owner Maurice is really helpful and is available whenever needed - nothing is too much trouble for him - the welcome crate of beer was greatly appreciated!!

Dave who cleans the pool was also really friendly and helpful and it was nice to have English people to be able to share their knowledge of the local area.

Overall a stunning location to holiday and we will definitley return at some point!

Back to Paradise

  • 5 out of 5
I’ve already stayed 4 times in el Cortijo, and I can’t get enough of it!

The new equipment and layout adds to the comfort and charm of the location: warm tones of paint, a closet and side table in the twin room, a Louis XV bureau upstairs, new sitting area under the palm tree, growing plants adding charm around the house, a solid-built barbecue on the terrace and wood-burning stove in the living room (even if we didn’t need to make use of it in July…)

Being French and Italian, and therefore very fond of cooking, we once again relished eating local fresh products thanks to the very well-equipped kitchen, even for a group holiday.

We also discovered new places of interest: The hotel Viñuela and their music nights, Maison Sarah for the tapas, and a chiringito on a grey beach near Nerja.

The ever-present sun allows you to fully enjoy the swimming pool, which seemed even bigger than I remembered. The sunsets (and rises) are breathtaking as well as the 360° views of this wonderful villa.

One thing is for sure, it won’t be my last visit!

Olive trees, mountains, a lake and serenity.

  • 5 out of 5
We first stayed at cortijo in January 2011 in order to take advantage of the mild Andalusian winter and visit nearby Malaga, Granada and Seville. At the time we knew we would be back one day to try out the house in the summer.
So in July (2014) we returned to the house. This time around there were 5 of us, instead of just the two, but we didn't notice the difference. The living space is more than enough for 10 people, and there is plenty of room around and in the pool. We arrived the Saturday at 17hrs (as last time the house was spotless), and were greeted by the gentle sound of the fountain and the rustling of a cool breeze (as well as the six-pack in the fridge we had previously arranged for, to help with travel fatigue!)
The only difference, (apart from it being 20°C warmer), were the many improvements the owner had made in order to make a stay here even more easy and enjoyable.
need examples?
The kitchen utensils had doubled, to include absolutely everything, even a grill pan for grilling steaks! (But to be honest which idiot would want to cook a steak indoors in the evening when its flippin 35°C, rather than make full use of the NEW, custom built double BBQ, overlooking the pool and the village of los Romanos? But it's nice to have options...)
Another small, but clever improvement: the handy, accessible fridge freezer on the terrace. Having two fridges means you only have to worry about food shopping once per week. Plenty of room for food and refreshments!
There were others, many small details, but there is no need to list them all! The point is, they are things that many holiday rental owners fail to even think of, which goes to show the thought and attention to detail the owner takes!
Everything you need for a peaceful, self catering holiday.
But If you don't feel like cooking, no problem! There is plenty to try nearby! From typical tapas bars to the upmarket hotel viñuela, (and if you must, there's even a chippy) there is a great choice of local (and 'not-so-local') cuisine (miguels in los romanes is a must for steak lovers!).

We really needed a calm stress free holiday, and cortijo gives you exactly that! Enjoy!

Arrived at this villa with my husband and two teenagers 17 and 19. The villa was perfect with a large pool and the surroundings beautiful ideal for my son who loves to walk. The lake was great for him. A car is essential but some wonderful places to visit. A perfect week to relax and enjoy

Breathtaking location, true to description

  • 5 out of 5
We knew we were in the right place when we found this cortijo well equipped in the kitchen! My husband is something of a chef and his brief was 'make sure it's up to the 'job' !! Champagne flutes were soon filled on arrival as we toasted ourselves to a great find. It felt as though the owners had just 'popped out' as it was very clean and homely with tablecloths and candles scattered around the lounge making it feel welcoming. The layout is amazing with plenty of places to have a cheeky snooze away from each other or solitude. We made use of both indoor/outdoor tables and associated
eating facilities and when Mr Mosquito arrived in the evening enjoyed the beautiful vaulted lounge. We all felt it would be a great place to write ones memoirs, or write a music score or paint or draw. However, it was not to be as the wine from the region usually resulted in us being comatose in a lounger for the best part of the afternoon and mañana never came! There was beautiful laid out flower beds which resulted in glorious rose petal scents wafting around both early mornings and evenings. The grounds are well tended, although there may be some difficulties with the infirm or very young trying to navigate the steps down to the pool. A car is essential as it is very rural but as far as we were concerned the drive to the shops was well worth it to have such a charming location. There is a book cupboard, a games cupboard, an iPod Dock and the use of a laptop plus a TV. We would definitely like to return another time. A well written brochure was available to check on any information you may need. A walk to the lake is worth taking, even if we did get lost and had to navigate our way back up through the olive groves!! However, fear not the second back up drinks cupboard ....or should I say fridge ....was waiting for us to quench our thirsts from our navigational error. All in all a fantastic holiday and congratulations to the owners for making our stay a momentous one.
