Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday barn in Tremolat - Le Chabrol

2015 Is Already Half Booked !!!

2015 is filling up quickly, so act now to lock in the dates you want !! All our repeat guests would indicate that we're doing something right!!

Featured in the (UK) Times' ''Top Holiday Villas' 18 April 2009 and AGAIN 28 Feb 2010, our light and airy home sits in a prime location, under mature trees, by a vast open meadow running out to the riverbank beyond. The open yet separate spacious gourmet kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances will please the most demanding cook. Shop every day in a different farmers' market, then enjoy your treasures under the cherry tree by the pool, at the table on the riverbank, in formal grace under the grapevines on the terrace, or indoors at a fine oak table seating 6 to 10 in easy comfort. The gardens are full of cutting flowers for you to pick, plus snackables like strawberries, cherry tomatoes, cherries, figs, pears, grapes and physalis, each in its season. Elegant 'American' bathrooms with strong spacious showers and unlimited hot water. Enjoy hot air ballooning, cliff-top castles, antique markets, the Bergerac and Bordeaux vineyards, canoeing, Cro-Magnon caves, fine dining and much more. Sky TV and WiFi.

More About the House: As recent retirees, American Broadway producers now living mostly in London, we take great pride in this place. It's a long-standing dream come true: a tranquil, romantic spot located in what we believe to be the loveliest corner of France. This is an area of exceptional natural beauty, steeped in history, glowing with sun and fine weather, with outstanding cuisine at every turn. We designed the renovation to be in harmony with the region's architectural heritage, and have decorated the house in muted colors, with subtly elegant fabrics and authentic French country antiques. We love a bit of luxury, and a really good barbecue. We feel that the house is intimate yet expansive, cheerful but calm. In summer we live by the sparkling salt-water swimming pool, lunching under the cherry tree with a great bottle of the local Bergerac wine and maybe some BBQ. In winter, we love that big fireplace! Come enjoy our happy home - we think we've set very reasonable prices for what you get!

The Restaurants: There's a list of our current favourites in the kitchen, and you'll surely have done some research on your own. Tempting though it is to eat at home every night (and al fresco, at that -- NO BUGS!!!), there is fantastic food to be had here at every price range. Trémolat alone has its renowned Michelin-starred Le Vieux Logis AND the best pizza restaurant in the region. Within a half-hour radius you can find restaurants ranging from world-class refinement to a retired couple who serve the best confit and foie gras in the world on tottering little tables in their pretty back yard. Note to autumn and winter visitors, GET THEIR CASSOULET!! The classic cuisine of Périgord features, besides duck and goose, the other key regional products which it grows and ships throughout France and around the world: strawberries, walnuts, truffles, Bergerac wines and the elegant Sauternes-like Monbazillac. In summer, don't miss the night markets, where you dine outdoors on regional specialities in rustic village squares throughout the region.

Enjoying the River: The Dordogne, shallow in summer and rather slow-moving in many spots, is considerably warmer than you might expect, and a delight to swim in. There are many beaches along the roads from which swimming is fun, quiet and easy. (Our own bit of the riverbank is protected for the blue herons, wild swans and ducks that have adopted it. It's very scenic, but a little rocky for easy swimming.) Canoe rentals are available throughout the region so you can enjoy any number of leisurely hour-long scenic spectaculars. Waterskiing and pedalos are available at the Trémolat Bassin Nautique, where you can also hire a canoe or kayak for a few hours, or for your entire stay -- there are locking rings on our little boat dock so you can keep it secure during your stay.

Short barge trips can be booked in the fantastic carved-into-the-cliffsides village of La Roque Gageac on the road to Sarlat. Rent a bike and cycle the tranquil towpaths beside the local canals which skirt the occasional rapids which made it rough sailing when goods from the region drifted downriver to Bordeaux two centuries ago. Climb Richard the Lionheart's spectacular fortified castle in Beynac.

About Gary Gunas

Recently retired, my partner and I now live our life-long dream of having four sweet homes and living in whichever strikes our fancy at a given time. To cover the bills, all the properties are rented on HomeAway whenever we're not in them. Managing the rentals has turned into quite a pleasant, though very time consuming, new profession for us, wherein we meet (or at least correspond with) the loveliest people from all over the planet. We've had nearly 200 guests in the past three years, and not a single bad experience. Phew! (46 reviews so far, over the four properties, and every one a full FIVE STARS !!) And we have great local staff for each property, so each home is always up to our own high standards for comfort, cleanliness and beauty.

Before retiring in 2005, I spent more than 30 years working on Broadway and in London's West End -- first managing, then producing, big musicals (mostly) plus handfuls of plays and concerts. I was part of the original productions of GODSPELL, DREAMGIRLS, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, and many dozens more, and producer of The Who's TOMMY and JEKYLL & HYDE, to name a few. Broadway concerts include Bette Midler, Michael Crawford, Frank Sinatra and even a very elderly Josephine Baker (a New Year's Eve concert, at the Palace, of course), whose chateau is just down the road from our house in France.

My partner Bill Rosenfield was for many years what Time Magazine wrote of him: 'RCA Victor's Man about Broadway'. He produced more than 60 Original Cast Recordings -- just pick one up at home if you have one -- if it's from the 1990's or early 2000's, his name is probably on it: CHICAGO, TOMMY, RAGTIME, CABARET, on and on. Billy's now retired from that and actively engaged in his one true passion: playwrighting. This new career is just budding, but already showing great progress. He does most of his writing in a cute little shed at the bottom of the garden behind our London flat.

Gary Gunas purchased this barn in 2001

Why Gary Gunas chose Tremolat

We love this property for the way it addresses that great rule of Location, Location, Location.

Location #1: The Dordogne itself. We've vacationed in this region since the late 1970's and we believe it's the loveliest corner of France. This is an area of exceptional natural beauty, steeped in history, glowing with sun and fine weather, with outstanding cuisine at every turn. Our fellow expats here claim, and we agree, that for certain people there's a definite magnetism here that draws you in and just doesn't let go -- kind of a mystical, visceral pull, in fact.

Location #2: Our little corner of the Dordogne. The Périgord Noir, as it's called, is the heart of the heart of the region, known for its indigenous black truffles and the black shade of the pine forests that still stand in many areas, however open to farming and scenic vistas it may be today. We have far less of the tourist-jammed traffic of the Sarlat area, 40 minutes to our east, and far more of the sumptuous tranquility which is the region's greatest asset.

Location #3: Our own plot of land. Turning our backs to the quiet little road that we're on, we overlook our own pool and gardens, and beyond that the open fields and river, with our own land blending into the neighbours' as far as the eye can see. Giant sky, total privacy. Sweet.

When we bought this property, it was a very tired working barn -- the cows were still living on its mud floor! We designed the renovation to be in harmony with the region's architectural heritage. From the street, it still looks rather like the barn is always was, with large-scale louvers around the front door to reflect the house's original heritage as a tobacco-drying barn. But from the back -- the side facing the river -- it's clearly more like the 'Relais et Chateau' properties that inspired its design. More than one friend has called our house a Tardis -- a seemingly-modest box by the road, with a whole other UNIVERSE inside and out back.

What makes this barn unique

We love to cook -- elaborate meals, for lots of friends. And so we designed the kitchen to suit this joy. It's got everything you could possibly want in terms of equipment -- fish poachers, cherry pitters, cake and tart pans of all sizes, the works. And given the quality of even the most basic foodstuffs here -- from the daily farmers' markets or the superb Grand Frais shop in Bergerac and other specialty shops like Arvouet Foie Gras in Le Buisson -- well, you can cook the same recipes you use at home and come up with flavours you never thought possible! But you can also use our many French cookbooks (all in English) and cook like you've never cooked before.

What sets us apart from most other rental houses in the area is that it's really a HOME, and not a calculated, Ikea-furnished rental property. We applied some basic calm good taste to it and have decorated the house in muted colors, with subtly elegant fabrics and authentic French country antiques. When you compare us to many other properties, you won't find 'that' sofa here (as one of our guests recently exclaimed with relief)!

Further, while it's indeed our home, we always de-clutter it completely before any guests arrive, so that you're never living with any of our 'stuff' -- every closet and cupboard is completely empty and sparkling clean. No clothes, photos or toys. You're not working around us; the house is all yours when you're here. We rent HomeAway homes on our own holidays, and a key factor for us is just this -- not feeling like we're bunking in with strangers!

We want this to be your very own home away from home.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I want to thank you so much for creating the opportunity for my brother, my father and I to celebrate my mother's 80th in such a stylish and gorgeous home. The setting is just breathtaking, the local village of Trémolat enchanting and the local sights and markets all added up to a perfect week. I hope I get the chance to visit again some day. Nick

Even better than we hoped!!

  • 5 out of 5
As experienced renters from Home Away and VRBO, this house was not only as lovely in person as online, but also had a livability that is so welcome, with a high level of design, yet no personal memorabilia, which is much appreciated. Gary has ensured the comfort level is top notch (towels, beds, bathrooms, linens, utensils, chaises, chairs, etc…. a long list!). Gary is a huge part of the experience, answering emails in detail, presenting the house and expectations very well, and having the best "while you are here" booklet of any rental ever! And two outlets in a perfect place by the handy bookcase for charging phones, laptops, Kindles, batteries...!
Fabulous fireplace, makes you want to be there in colder weather! Super kitchen, well equipped for a serious cook, and very generous size; the open concept is nicely staged to keep kitchen, dining and living areas well defined, all with excellent lighting (seriously, as much or as a little as you want). Especially good to know is that all the bedrooms are reasonably equal in size, décor and location – they all face the river/pool side. Just to prove that point, our friends who came to visit for the weekend declared they weren't going to leave! On our arrival, we actually discussed if we would use the master bedroom, or the middle bedroom with the French doors…. no one could think they had a lesser bedroom. The road by the house has only local traffic, not bothersome because the house faces away from it. Something I appreciated: to illuminate the curve in the road, the street lights (soft yellow) are spaced far away on each side of the house and don’t shine in, yet the light gives a warm glow like a faint nightlight, reassuring and handy in the middle of the night! No stubbing of toes!
The team on the ground, Cheri and Brian, were both attentive and engaging, a huge asset. Don’t be shy about asking questions, couldn't be nicer!
Do walk to Tremolat for dinner, but bring a flashlight to come home! Stop to look at the stars as you cross the bridge.... pitch black, totally silent and millions of stars, only a hundred yards from the house. Makes you feel you have stepped back in time - no noise and no light is so rare, and peaceful.

A lovely house and great owners

  • 5 out of 5
We had a great vaction in Tremolat this Summer. The owners were so friendly and helpful and did everything to make our stay enjoyable. The house is decorated with great taste and very well maintanied. The kitchen was such a joy to cook in. Also, Bill and Gary had prepared an extensive guide to the area with a lot of great tips to enhance the experience. The whole team, from owners, housekeeper, cook and caretakers were friendly and responsive. Really, a very lovely stay.

Relaxation, Rivertowns, Rental extraordinaire

  • 5 out of 5
When we read all the reviews of this property, saw the photos, and researched the Dordogne region, we knew we were in for something very special. But when we arrived at Le Chabrol house, it surpassed all of our expectations. The house was full of charm and warmth, the setting of the property fantastic, and the pool refreshing and needed at the end of a long wonderful sightseeing day. Flowers abound inside and out. All of the interior rooms are beautiful, all with unique touches and charm. The kitchen is a chef's paradise, with every possible detail needed to make a gourmet meal. And what could be better than going right outside and picking herbs and fresh strawberries from the garden. Sipping rose from the region, relaxing on the lounge chairs by the pool, taking a stroll on the property down to the river and watching the sun begin to set on a beautiful bridge over the water--what an ending to perfect days.
Gary and Bill took perfect care of us from the moment of our booking until we left. Every detail about the facilities of the home, restaurant recommendations, and invaluable touring suggestions was included in their fantastic book.
We visited amazing and quaint towns of Cadouin, Issegiac, and Eymet. On to Montignac to visit Lascaux caves, then touring the beautiful countryside, farms, vineyards. Other favorites were the gorgeous cliffside town of Le Roque Gageac (rent a kayak or take a boat ride down the river), touring Beynac Castle nearby, and the amazing Hautefort Castle. One can not miss the lovely town of Sarlat and its huge market day. Oh, and the food.... It doesn't matter where you go, it is all delicious. Standouts were L'Assiette Gourmand (with marvelous chefs/owners, Sylvie and Michel), Chez Julien and Le Bistro right in Tremolat town.
We can only give the highest recommendations for this magical place. We stayed a week, but wished it could have been longer. Thanks, Gary and Bill, for making this a highlight of our vacation!

Idyllic house on the Dordogne

  • 5 out of 5
A perfect house for a week in the dreamy Dordogne, one of the loveliest regions of France.
The living space was comfortable with a well stocked and very functional kitchen. Upstairs the
bedrooms all had views and good beds and the two bathrooms were modern and lacking for nothing. It was a great house to return to each evening and enjoy the late setting sun with friends and wine. We rent houses all the time and this one will be remembered as a very special experience.

Delightful - simply delightful!

  • 5 out of 5
Where to begin! This warm and inviting home is nearly beyond description. The owners have truly made this stone "barn" makeover into something very special. Upon entering, you immediately understand the glowing reviews that other guests have written. When I look for a vacation property my research is very thorough, and after exchanging several emails with Gary, I knew the photos wouldn't lie. He and Bill have found ways to welcome each guest as if they were both there in person, down to the bottle of local wine, so welcome after a day of travel. As one guest previously wrote: I had a "sense that nothing could go wrong" and it was so. The attention to detail, fabulous linens, the gourmet kitchen, the antiques, the abundance of fresh herbs and flowers from the garden, the views, the path to river Dordogne all made our stay so enjoyable. We had several guests join us during our two week stay and when they first stepped inside, they marveled that this property was actually available for rent! In truth, we had a difficult time leaving to do the sightseeing we planned to do. We had a couple of days of lovely weather which allowed us to use the pool and what a treat that was after a day of playing tourist!

The efforts that created the "Enjoy Our House" manual were truly appreciated and provided a wealth of information. We referred to it daily whether to find another dining experience or consult the list of daily markets or a must see tourist attraction.

The tiny village of Tremolat is a short walk from the house so make plans to have lunch or dinner at Le Bristrot d'en Face, one of the restaurants that is listed in the house manual. Well worth the trip. Plus after eating your 4th or 5th serving of foie gras, the walk is needed! In LaLinde, there is a very small restaurant run by a husband and wife team that is not to be missed. The chef/wife is a fabulous cook and her desserts are devine. I believe the name is Les Petit Cuillere. And if you have the opportunity, by all means, take the advice of Gary and Bill and have a lovely dining experience at L'Assiette Gourmande! Charming owners and wonderful food!

Sarlat, Issigeac, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Paunat are a few of the villages/cities that offer opportunities for wonderful food and extraordinary photo opportunities.

"Le Chabrol", Gary, Bill and the management team, won't disappoint you!

Why Would You Stay Elsewhere--This is the Best!

  • 5 out of 5
Our month long stay at this stunning property was one that we wanted to extend indefinitely. One would think that this is an upscale retreat for an executive and not a rental home. It is beautifully decorated with tender loving care to please even the most finicky of guests. We loved sitting by the fireplace on chilly evenings, cradling a mug of hot chocolate which we had prepared in the very spacious, well equipped gourmet kitchen. The open floor plan flows beautifully, one room to the next, with the dining room overlooking the gorgeous swimming pool and gardens which are abundant with cutting herbs and some vegetables. The expansive garden area extends to the river as do the many walnut trees which groaned with nuts which we picked and enjoyed. Bliss! The bedrooms and bathrooms are plush and airy, designed with a clever eye for comfort and have ample light both by day and night. No stone has been left unturned to provide comfort and beauty. Your every need has been anticipated by the owners of this home that is a home and not simply a rental. They provide a wealth of information for you about the area, making it so easy to get around and enjoy the beauty and activity of the Dordogne area of France.

Car: necessary

Just half an hour from Bergerac Airport (Ryanair), we are situated directly on the Dordogne River in the tiny, friendly village of Calès, just across the bridge from Trémolat, halfway between Sarlat and Bergerac, at the very heart of this fabled part of the Aquitaine. A leisurely 30 or 40 minute drive to either city takes you to through all the tourist attractions of this justly-famous region -- pastoral farm scenes of sunflowers, corn and wheat, cliff-top castles on the riverbank, roadside foie gras shops, the amazing farmers' markets, bakeries, vinyards and wine shops. Stunningly beautiful bends and cliffs along the river, pre-historic caves and caverns, tranquil canoeing on the river, hot air ballooning, it's all here. An easy walk to Trémolat village brings you the glorious Michelin-starred, Relais-et-Chateaux inn, Le Vieux Logis, and its popular Bistrot d'en Face. And just down the road you can rent canoes, pedalos and bicycles, or board the train to Bordeaux and Paris.

Other Activities: Chat with our French, English and Dutch neighbors. Play petanque in any village square. Picture the troglodytes who hunted in our fields. Fish!

Golf: There are a dozen golf courses within a 40-minute drive. Many will rent clubs if you haven't brought your own. Though we prefer picking the wild flowers along the quiet country lanes, you will also find places for quad biking and go-carts if you really need to! Or enjoy your own golfing holiday and send the others off to one of the many canoe hire places or equestrian centres. Fishing (pike and perch, in particular) and horseback riding are a treat here, and public tennis courts are everywhere. The more sedate of you can take in the historic towns and villages, including the fortified bastide towns which still bear the scars of the 14th-Century Hundred Years' War, or see Europe's earliest art treasures, the cave paintings of early man at Lascaux. Or visit Les Milandes, where Josephine Baker raised her rainbow tribe of orphans, or gape at the stunning natural rock formations in the region's many spectacular caverns. Or cross from our Perigord Noir over to the Perigord Pourpre, where you can visit the vinyards of Bergerac and Bordeaux. Or stay home by the pool and enjoy all the modern conveniences of your home-from-home, 'Le Chabrol'.

To 'faire le chabrol' by the way, is to swirl your last drops of wine across your plate at the end of dinner, then slurp up the 'soup'. Leave it to the French to find a socially-acceptable way to lick your plate!

Bedroom 2 - 2 Single Bed , Super Comfort, Fine Linens
Bedroom 3 - 1 Large Double Bed , Super Comfort, Fine Linens
  • All 3 bedrooms are designed to an exceptionally high standard: charming, peaceful, immensely comfortable, cosy and just a bit chic. Each has a little something from the local antique shops to highlight the French country architecture. Bedroom One is a beautifully-appointed, gloriously breezy corner room with ensuite bath (shower, no tub). The twin beds in Room Two join to form a perfect extra large king, and the planted balcony is an ideal setting for a sunny country breakfast with binoculars to watch the birds in the fruit trees and riverside brush. Room Three, The Charlotte Suite, is a pretty room with great closet space and exposed original beams. When Room Two is not in use, the second upstairs bath closes off to become ensuite. Polished floors of local chestnut and muted Persian carpets complement the sumptuous duvets and crisp white linens. All rooms are bright and airy, and overlook the pool, gardens and river. These are romantic spaces - calm and understated.

Notes:
We're not encouraging pre-teens because there's a steep unfenced drop from our riverbank to the water (and a few too many antiques!). We say 'unsuitable for the elderly or infirm' only because the bedrooms are up a long, though gentle, staircase. No other hindrances, though! The hidden laundry closet in the back of the kitchen has the fastest washer and American-style dryer we've ever seen. Quiet, too! Next to the laundry is a small built-in desk area where you can set up your laptop and plug it into our printer should you wish. There's WiFi, a phone with answering machine, and maps and brochures for our favourite drives and markets. We've written an 'Enjoy Our House' booklet with everything you need to know about the place, including touristic highlights and restaurant recommendations. Private Chef services are available, as is Maid Service. Come enjoy our home. And if you want to spend some time in London, see our Properties #417134 and #811435 on HomeAway.co.uk.
