Las Herrerias estate and the Natural Park: Las Herrerias de Rio Madera is a 1600-acre private working estate hidden deep in one of Western Europe’s finest areas of wilderness, where high mountains and sweeping pine forests surround a spectacular valley.
It is in the Natural Park of the Sierras of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas. This vast mountainous park covering 214,000 hectares and forming the second largest forested area in Europe, is situated in the north-eastern
Andalucia region of Spain.
Through a careful management programme, the estate ensures the protection of its wonderful natural environment, which is home to a great variety of indigenous wildlife. The wide diversity of species in the Natural Park – some of which are protected - range from the tiny and exquisite ‘viola cazorliense’ (Cazorla violet) to wild boar, eagles, vultures, mountain goats, wild cats and deer.
Activities on and off the estate: The breathtaking scenery and year-round sunshine make the perfect combination for an unforgettable holiday.
Free activities on site - mountain biking, trekking and walking, marked nature routes, tree house for animal observation, zip-lining, and bird watching. A unique experience at the moment is to visit and see the natural habitat of two recently released bearded vultures (Gypaetus Barbatus) which were extinct until recently in southern Spain. See Our News page on the Owners Website. Fantastic bird sightings possible.

The estate is located in the heart of the Segura Natural Park, an incredibly unspoilt mountain range covered with pine forests and divided by beautiful valleys, not far from the fairy tale walled town of Segura de la Sierra with a castle perched on top.
The cities and towns of the province are very picturesque, offering a wealth of historically and culturally important sights –Granada, Ubeda and Baeza have been accorded World Heritage status. The capital city of Jaen has its own graceful beauty and many historical monuments, particularly the Cathedral and the medieval Christian castle that rests on Mount Santa Catalina. It is worth stopping over at any of these places either on the way to Las Herrerias or on the way back.
Very close to Las Herrerias are the beautiful, fortified mountain top towns of Segura de la Sierra and Hornos de Segura. Other Towns nearby are Orcera and Cortijos Nuevos. The closest villages which have a shop, bar, etc are Rio de Madera and Pontones.
