Las Herrerias estate and the Natural Park: Las Herrerias de Rio Madera is a 1600-acre private working estate hidden deep in one of Western Europe’s finest areas of wilderness, where high mountains and sweeping pine forests surround a spectacular valley.

It is in the Natural Park of the Sierras of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas. This vast mountainous park covering 214,000 hectares and forming the second largest forested area in Europe, is situated in the north-eastern

Andalucia region of Spain.

Through a careful management programme, the estate ensures the protection of its wonderful natural environment, which is home to a great variety of indigenous wildlife. The wide diversity of species in the Natural Park – some of which are protected - range from the tiny and exquisite ‘viola cazorliense’ (Cazorla violet) to wild boar, eagles, vultures, mountain goats, wild cats and deer.

Activities on and off the estate: The breathtaking scenery and year-round sunshine make the perfect combination for an unforgettable holiday.

Free activities on site - mountain biking, trekking and walking, marked nature routes, tree house for animal observation, zip-lining, and bird watching. A unique experience at the moment is to visit and see the natural habitat of two recently released bearded vultures (Gypaetus Barbatus) which were extinct until recently in southern Spain. See Our News page on the Owners Website. Fantastic bird sightings possible.

Total freedom for children – peaceful and safe. Hours of fun playing in the river and building tree houses.

Off-site activities - rafting, canoeing, abseiling, caving and potholing, canoeing, horse-riding, and archery. The local aerodrome offers para-gliding, para-motoring and para-triking. Hunting by arrangement.

Special Offer Hunting; October & November 2011 1 Red Deer + 2 Wild Boar for € 1,000.

Food and restaurants : Organic local produce - the Cortijo is kept well-stocked with basic foodstuffs and domestic supplies. Local products are provided whenever possible, such as the honey from hives kept on the estate which is available during spring and summer, or the locally-produced international award-winning olive oil. There is excellent local free range pork and chicken available all year, a really tender venison can be purchased by arrangement during the hunting season, walnuts and quince grow locally in season, truffles can be purchased from private estates in the area, and jamon serrano is cured in the mountains.

About restaurants; 3 good restaurants in Segura alone - two with wonderful views. Eat 3 course set meals in small, local restaurants for Euro 10 per head including beer, wine and coffee !

Serenity and adventure!

  • 5 out of 5
A wonderful place to relax and to forget about everyday life. Its setting in the heart of the mountains renders it the perfect location for walking, biking, and other more adventurous activities, but also quiet contemplation. The spiritual connection that you get when sitting and observing nature with a refreshing and calming breeze makes the place truly unique. A real treasure.

In short, a fantastic holiday!

  • 5 out of 5
Fantastic surroundings, fantastic house, fantastic food... and all to yourself!

Being an outdoor-lover, this was the perfect place. Endless walks/rambles in the mountains, great drives on and off-road, plenty of sporting activities within striking-distance, animals to watch.

We had really excellent food from the chef once a day, and the accomodation is 5 star - a beautifully restored/rennovated farmhouse in the traditional style, with nothing missing that I could think of.

Highly recommended to anyone or any group wanting an active holiday, or to those simply wanting to get away from it all and veg out in comfort surrounded by stunning views. Will appeal to all ages.

Am I going again? You bet!

Truly special, can't wait to return.

Photos cannot do full justice to this fabulous property and its surrounding beauty. The attention to detail within the house gave the impression of a boutique hotel. The in house wine cellar[excellent variety and value], and facility for ordering[and having delivered] food shopping, removed any of the hassle of a self-catering property.
Various wonderful guides and staff were on offer to provide mountain excursions[highly recommended], offer suggestions of good restaurants, and wonderful walks/visits to neighbouring villages and towns. The children just adored mountain biking around the farm, swimming, and kayaking on the beautiful lake at Embalse, followed up by prolonged evening card games of twizzle, and turns at plugging their ipods into the in-house speaker system. We loved every local village and town, even if a bit of a hike, always worth it for friendly bars and tapas, and the chef's pet bambi deer in the bar at Rio de Madera!.

The estate is located in the heart of the Segura Natural Park, an incredibly unspoilt mountain range covered with pine forests and divided by beautiful valleys, not far from the fairy tale walled town of Segura de la Sierra with a castle perched on top.

The cities and towns of the province are very picturesque, offering a wealth of historically and culturally important sights –Granada, Ubeda and Baeza have been accorded World Heritage status. The capital city of Jaen has its own graceful beauty and many historical monuments, particularly the Cathedral and the medieval Christian castle that rests on Mount Santa Catalina. It is worth stopping over at any of these places either on the way to Las Herrerias or on the way back.

Very close to Las Herrerias are the beautiful, fortified mountain top towns of Segura de la Sierra and Hornos de Segura. Other Towns nearby are Orcera and Cortijos Nuevos. The closest villages which have a shop, bar, etc are Rio de Madera and Pontones.
