4 Bedrooms, sleeps up to 10 people, beautiful surroundings, secure pool

A stunning conversion of a 19th century stone barn, situated on the edge of a quiet village in the heart of the French countryside yet close to a market town with excellent amenities.

Sleeps 8 to 10 people in superb comfort and has its own secure private swimming pool.

Beautifully furnished and decorated to a very high standard.

A high chair is available and a children's cot, with sheets and blankets is provided upon request.

The salt water swimming pool, which is easily accessible by Roman steps, is equipped with sun loungers, parasols, table and chairs and has a shaded seating area. A Weber barbecue is provided with all utensils. The pool is entirely enclosed and gated to ensure the security of younger children.

The house also has its own enclosed orchard garden planted with a variety of trees which provide welcome shade.

Local Attractions and Facilities: There is a lovely riding stables within ten minutes with placid, easy horses for all the family.

There are many wonderful attractions for children within reach of La Grange. Among these are The Valley of the Monkeys, Futuroscope and Aventure Parc (climbing in the trees).

The beaches of the Cote Sauvage are 60 to 90 minutes from the house. It makes a nice day out to take a picnic and enjoy the breakers.

In Angouleme there is a lake complex which offers canoeing, wind surfing and dinghy sailing.

There is also a velo rail (basically a human powered platform on old train lines which two people power by pedalling a cycle while three others can sit and enjoy the countryside).

Sarah worked in the hospitality industry prior to marriage. She finished her career as the Sales Director for the Great Eastern Hotel in the City of London.

Why Chris Morrow chose Oradour d'Aigre

Chris had wanted a house in France since he was fifteen He came out to the Charente for a weekend of wining and dining with an old friend and on the way looked at some houses. He arrived in Chille with a bit of a hangover but fell in love with this property the minute he saw it and made an offer on the spot.

What makes this house unique

The property comprises two separate houses which are completely private, have their own swimming pools, entrances and facilities so people who visit La Grange are not overlooked by the owners but do have the benefit of access to us if you need anything in emergency or need translation. This is a beautiful house in a very tranquil setting. It is really well equipped - and if you don't find absolutely everything you need then we can usually lend it to you from the other house.

A week of fun and relaxation

During the summer of 2006 I spent a glorious week at La Grange de Chille. Cicumstances at the time dictated that my wife stay at home and I alone should take our three children who were then 5, 10, and 12 years. The clear directions from the airport was of immense value with three tired and hungry kids in the car and no wife to shout at. On arrival, late at night, the owners had had the foresight to provide more than suffient food to keep us going until the next day. There was even a rather nice bottle of the local Pineau de Charante which somewhat set the tone for me for the week to come! A shopping trip to the local town, a short drive away, provided all the usual and safe brand names that the kids demanded and I returned several times to sample the wares of the town butcher, baker and other various French delicasies. The house itself was a delight; perfect for a family, a group of adults, or I can only imagine, a romantic break. I actually enjoyed looking after the kids, watching them play in the pool, cooking for them or just relaxing. We did visit the Valley of the apes or whatever its called, and I did take them to a rather spectacular swimming pool ( don't forget that the French insist that speedo style swimming trunks must be worn!!) The house and surroundings were so pleasant however that the kids and myself were more than happy just to hang around. I shall certainly be returning either with or without the kids. ( I may even take the wife).

Chille is a quiet village within 5 miles of the busy market town of Aigre where you will find supermarkets, butchers, bakers and a variety of shops catering to your needs. A little further afield are the hypermarkets of Rouillac (10 miles), Ruffec (12 miles) and Angouleme (25 miles).

If you want the sea then a short, one hour trip to the Ile d'Oleron will bring you to some of the best surf on the West Coast. Aleternatively, you could go to either La Rochelle or the Ile de Re which are only about 20 minutes further.

Other Activities: Canoeing, archery, go-karting, tree climbing adventure park

Golf: There are two excellent courses in nearby Angouleme and Cognac (drown your sorrows in brandy if you lose the match).

  • The upstairs bathroom complex is laid out so that each facility (bath, shower and toilet) may be used separately, thus avoiding any delay for guests. The downstairs bathroom is en-suite and is a 'wet room' style shower with basin and toilet. This bathroom would be accessible to a wheelchair user. There is a further toilet on the ground floor.

Notes:
The house has its own enclosed garden with mature trees providing plenty of shade. Nearby is a lake with artificial beach and fishing. The gently rolling countryside is ideal for cycling. There is a wide variety of local attractions suitable for both children and adults and a good choice of restaurants and cafes within easy reaching distance. La Grange is equipped to the highest standard with regular replacement of worn or tired fixtures and fittings etc. There is a great local riding stable. Canoes can be rented locally. Bicycles are available for hire by the week from a local provider. Please ask for more details of all these.
