ST. CROIX RIVER SUMMER HOUSE IN SCANDIA, WATERFRONT ACCESS & VIEWS

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cottage in Forest Lake - Summersby River House

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Our house on the St. Croix River, less than an hour from the Twin Cities, was built as a summer home by my parents, on property in the family since 1912. Set very close to the river shore, the house enjoys unparalleled river views and easy access down a short path to the shore, to great swimming, a dock and boat landing. The St. Croix River is a federally-protected National Scenic Riverway, with no development whatever on the opposite Wisconsin shore and hills directly across from our house, so the setting is pristine, quiet, and unspoiled. The water is clean, the bottom is sandy, and the swimming is great, as is the fishing. Available for renters' use is our canoe plus two kayaks.

.

Originally built in 1940, the house has been added to and updated over the years. The master bedroom suite was added in 1959 and renovated in 1993, and the kitchen was enlarged and fully remodeled in 1993. Facing the river is a flagstone terrace, outside fireplace, front lawn with eating table, comfortable seating, a hammock, and birdfeeders with numerous visitors. Our hummingbirds, goldfinches and woodpeckers are regulars here, and you're sure to hear and see the spectacular pileated woodpecker if you keep the peanut feeder filled.

There are three bedrooms with twin beds, plus a screened sleeping porch closest to the river with two more beds. One bathroom has a tub and shower and the other bath has a stall shower. In addition there is an excellent outside shower, great after a swim. The kitchen is fully equipped, has a round eating table plus a pass-through to the dining area of the living room. The kitchen also has a built-in sofa bed for an occasional visitor, or for relaxing while dinner is cooking. The large living room is comfortably furnished, has a bow-front with large windows facing the river, and a wood-burning fireplace. Kitchen and master bedroom both have ceiling fans and there are several portable fans.

Close to the house is our nice shady tennis court. Our deep shady ravine offers exploring adventures with a spectacular double waterfall and pristine stream that flows into the river next to the house. Fishing is good up and down the shoreline or from the dock.

Next to the property is a public boat-launching ramp, and just a mile south is the William O'Brien State Park, with camping sites, hiking trails, river access with a boat launching ramp and a separate swimming pond with sandy beach. The closest town, 10 minutes south, is the historic village of Marine-on-St-Croix, once a major sawmill for the white pine logging industry during the mid-to-late 19th and early 20th century, when huge log drives were the principal traffic on the river. The larger town of Stillwater,18 miles south on the river, was also a major center of the lumberjack era and today offers antique shops, paddlewheel steamboats and numerous restaurants. The town of Taylor's Falls, known for rock climbing and another Interstate Park, is an equal distance upriver to the north.

During most of the year my wife and I live in Masschusetts, but every August and September we look forward to our St. Croix River House, where I spent every summer of my youth with a large band of cousins and friends whom we still see every year. It's a special place, close to our hearts, and every June and July we offer it for rent to others to enjoy life on the St. Croix.

Ed Summersby purchased this cottage in 1940

The property has been in my family since long before my time. My grandfather built the original house in 1912, now owned by our cousins, located along the river 100 yards downsteam from our house. My connections to this place go back a long way, and we care deeply about it.

Unique to our property is the close proximity of the house to the river, with easy access to swimming, fishing, the canoe and kayak and the dock, which we share with our next-door cousins. Being so close to the river allows us to experience directly the river in all its splendor and sometimes dramatic moods. Reclining in the front yard and watching the full moon rising over the darkened Wisconsin hills and reflecting in the the calm waters of the St. Croix is a sublime experience.

upon arriving at the home, we found laundry(towels and bedding) hanging in the yard and some packed in a small washing machine being washed in cold water. the rest of the unclean laundry was found in a basket, and we were asked by the owner's relative to take care of cleaning the rest.the appliances were less than clean and rusted. we also tried using the so-called beach, where we found mud that we sunk in and and a fast current and drop-off in river, we have small children and thought this was not an appropriate vacation home for our family.

Owner's Response: The complaint about the unfinished laundry on arrival is correct - the previous renter failed their contractual responsibility to leave all their laundry clean, folded and put away, which has never happend before. For this unfortunate occurrence we reimbursed the complainant $250.

Regarding the complaint that our beach was muddy and therefore unusable, the reason is this: In summer 2013 the water level in the St. Croix River remained unusually high ever since the usual springtime high water, and therefore until just prior to this renter's arrival our swimming beach was under water, and therefore remained wet and muddy for about a week while it dried out. This situation, while unusual, was beyond any human control. For this disappointment we reimbursed the complainant $750, for a total refund of $1,000.

We believe our $1,000 refund was a generous offer to make amends for the renter's disappointments, both of which were not our fault. Nevertheless, the renter chose to focus solely on these two issues, and ignored all the other benefits and positve aspects of our rental property on the beautiful St. Croix River. It is not our fault that this renter chose not to take occupancy at all, and walked away from her fully paid-up two week rental.

Location

The St. Croix River, on the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin, is a national treasure, forever preserved under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, managed and protected by the National Park Service. It is primarily a canoeing and kayaking river, plus small outboard motorboats and pontoon boats. In summer, the river is too shallow for large and fast motorboats, and waterskiing and use of jet skis are not appropriate and are discouraged. The bottom is sandy, and the swimming and fishing are great. The Wisconsin side of the river is federal property and is totally undeveloped, so we see no lights across the river at night - just solitude and quiet.
