TRADITIONAL COTTAGE WITH POOL IN RURAL LOCATION

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Paredes de Coura - Casa da Fonte

Close to forest walks, sandy beaches and Spanish border

Built in 1868 the granite stone cottage has been sympathetically restored and retains many original features, including the open beamed ceiling and shutters.

Overlooking the rural hamlet of Tarrio, the property has stunning views across a river valley to the mountains beyond. The cottage is adjacent to the farmhouse where the owner lives and has a private patio with lemon tree and rustic barbecue. The pool and surrounds( occasionally shared with the owner) overlooks terraces of lawn, flowers and vegetable gardens that guests are welcome to explore. Car-parking is available under shady vines that are still used to produce wine on the property.

The accommodation is laid out as an open plan studio and has a double bed plus sofa beds suitable for children. In winter there is a cosy wood-burning stove and a fan is available for the summer months. The well-equipped kitchen has a gas hob/oven/grill and a microwave. The bathroom is spacious and modern with a thermostatic shower, wc, bidet and wash-basin.

The cottage has free wi-fi coverage and the flatscreen TV is connected to a satellite receiving all UK channels. There is also a DVD and music system.

There are many tracks for walking and mountain-bike riding leading from the property and the owner has bicycles for guest use. In the old stables of the farmhouse there is a games room with a table tennis table, table-top football, boules and badminton equipment, and a paper-back library.

There is a shared laundry area with washing machine, tumble dryer and iron for guest's use.

The local town of Paredes de Coura is 6km away and has a river swimming area, shops, cafes, restaurants and a Saturday market. In addition to the forest and village walks on your doorstep and the property is ideally situated to explore the coast and it's sandy beaches, the market towns of the Minho/Lima valleys or the Peneda-Geres National Park. The Spanish border is 30 mins and Porto airport is 1 hr drive away.

Canoeing/Kayaking: The owner has details of canoes for hire on the River Lima and River Minho. The canoeing is suitable for beginners and children.

About Mike Wild

Moved to Portugal from the UK in 2005 to enjoy the peace, climate, lush countryside and uncrowded beaches of the Costa Verde. The friendly, relaxed attitude of the local population and the lower cost of living were also major factors.

Now retired, I spend my time gardening and looking after the property, cycling and kite-surfing, and of course, making sure our guests have a wonderful holiday!

Mike Wild purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Mike Wild chose Paredes de Coura

I love the character that comes with an old granite built property - and it keeps nice and cool in the summer. The view from the pool across the valley is stunning and although we are in a peaceful unspoilt location, we are only a few minutes drive from the local market town of Paredes de Coura

What makes this cottage unique

A large, virtually private pool (as only occasionally shared with owner and wife) and well-maintained terraced gardens of 3,000 sq metres.

Peaceful - apart from the church bells, and the occasional tractor working in the fields below.

Well-located to access

-the coast and a range of beautiful sandy beaches

- the Peneda -Geres National Park

-the Spanish border and coastal resorts

-the historic towns of Ponte de Lima, Braga, Guimaraes

Lovely cottage in beautiful unspoilt surroundings.

My 7-months pregnant wife and I came over for a pre-baby week of relaxation and quality time, and the Casita fitted the bill perfectly. Casa da Fonte is a perfect combination of traditional buildings and gardens with modern levels of equipment, comfort and convenience. Everything is in excellent condition. The casita consists of one very large room for sleeping, living and eating, plus a seperate shower room off to the side, with access to the private courtyard - a perfect amount of space for a couple and maybe 1 or 2 small children. The spacious pool area looks out over the terraced garden and vines, into the valley below.

The local hills and valleys are great for exploring, with ancient lanes and pathways, abandoned water mills and ruins, local smallholders with their traditional tools, waterfalls and abundant wildlife. These are best explored on foot or by mountain bike. Mike was an excellent guide on 2 wheels, taking me down some challenging and scenic trails while giving me the benefit of his detailed local knowledge!

Getting into the car, there are plenty of good days out within easy driving distance - I particularly liked visiting Ponte de Lima for the Roman bridge and exploring the interesting back streets and the Gil Eannes hospital ship in Viana do Castelo (we were going to go to the beach, but never quite made it!); also the fortress in Valenca, looking across the Minho river to Spain. My wife enjoyed a day in the spa at Moncao, which is fed with warm spring water from the nearby hills.

Other highlights were: the wood-burning stove; drinking Alvarinho in the sunny courtyard with a good book (if you run out, the games room has a good stock, of books that is); entering the 'Draftzone' mountain bike event at Melgaco; eating local salt cod dishes; travelling on the scenic and almost deserted local roads.

I'd recommend the Casita to any couple looking for a relaxing getaway in tranquil surroundings that are great fun to explore.

Excellent tranquil hidden gem.

From the outset we were welcomed by Mike and Maria. Their generosity was wonderful. The accommodation was more capacious than we anticipated and the photos do not do it justice.

We thouroughly enjoyed our stay, and helpful information about the local area from Mike was very useful. The pool is great and so clean!

We were continually being surprised by fresh vegetables from the gardens from Maria.

We thouroughly recommend the Casita.

The area is quiet and great if you want to get away from it all. There was a wide range of walking routes which were easy to access from the Casita or further afield.

Many thanks for a lovely holiday.

Peaceful retreat

  • 5 out of 5
Have just returned from a weeks stay at this beautiful cottage with my husband, it was everything we hoped for and more. The owners "Mike and Maria" were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble..........Maria works very hard in the gardens and she gave us freshly picked vegetables and sweet juicy raspberries some days, which were delicious. We especially loved the views from the pool area which overlooked the gardens and vines and onto the surrounding hills and valleys- The cottage is very spacious, very clean, comfortable and equipped with everything you need. This is definitely the place to stay and recharge your batteries, doing as little or as much as you choose..........We will definitely be back and hope to stay longer next time.

Just what the doctor ordered !

I read the reviews here before booking and hoped it would be half as good as they suggested - it turned out to be twice as good!

Beautiful location and property, maintained to an exceptionally high standard by the wonderful Mike and Maria. My girlfriend and I were in desperate need for a break from the chaos of London and the cottage, pool, gardens, countryside and local attractions were better than we had hoped - we have already recommended to friends and family!

Mike and Maria's warm welcome made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. The view and garden are wonderful. Floating in the swimming pool my youngest son kept telling me "this is Heaven". We hope to be there again one day!

Absolutely Fantastic

  • 5 out of 5
Where to begin? This was our 2nd visit to North Portugal and once again we were not disappointed. North Portugal is an area you have to discover for yourself but is an ideal tranquil getaway. Sun almost every day (a nice 25-30deg) and as long as you can travel everything is within reach. Beaches, Sea, Cities, Scenery, almost whatever takes your fancy for the day. It really is up to you! It is helpful if you learn at least some basic Portugese phrases but armed with just a little of the language we got by quite easily as the Portugese people are so friendly and helpful probably speaking more French and German (much to my partners delight-she`s German) than English.
The accommodation itself leaves nothing to be desired. Just as described in the listing with everything available (if not i`m sure you`d probably get it if you asked!). But descriptions can only describe and until you are actually there and feel the physical presence of this lovely building i don`t think words do it enough justice. Thick stone walls, well kept functioning terrace gardens, lovely swimming pool etc. For some i think just staying inside the grounds would be a fantastic holiday in itself! If by chance you catch a rainy day the games room will keep you more than occupied-books, dvd`s, table tennis , darts, computer..we took a laptop and found wi-fi connection good
Finally but most importantly and i think what made this holiday special for us are the hosts themselves Mike and Maria. As our 2 weeks progressed these people became more than just hosts, almost like the best next door neighbours you could possibly imagine. So friendly, warm and kind. Sharing the fresh garden produce, any directional advice we needed (and believe me i NEEDED it ) to sharing times with us which we will never forget. A special thank you to Mike (he`s a cycling fanatic!) I`d only been cycling for 6 weeks but with his inspiration and help we cycled up a mountain together (I`m sure he`ll show you which one if you ask lol).
I would DEFINITELY recommend this place to anyone going to visit North Portugal whatever kind of holiday you are looking for. I`m sure you won`t be disappointed.
This turned out to be more than a holiday for us it was a way of life with friends (Mike and Maria) we will never forget

The property is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the far north of Portugal, undiscovered and unspoilt by mass tourism. The countryside is hilly and forested, interspersed with cultivated terraces of vines and subsistence agriculture. The property is well located to access the many sandy beaches on the coast, the Lima and Minho river valleys or the mountainous Peneda national park further inland. There are several picturesque and historic market towns to explore such as Ponte de Lima and Barcelos. All along the coast are small fishing ports serving excellent fresh seafood. Spain is only 30 minutes away.
