Sandy and I moved here 34 years ago from the Bay Area because of our love of backpacking. No Regrets! We raised our family here. Both Sandy and I are retired teachers. Sandy elem. school and me, high school. We love outdoor activities as well as jewelry making, playing piano, gardening, knitting, swimming, exercising, hiking, wood working and sailing.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1977

The garden loft is a re-model of the upstairs of our wood shop. We just completed the re-model and because of our love of this area, we wanted to share our community with others.

Our visitors will enjoy the privacy and solitude as well as the close proximity to town, skiing, and many other outdoor activities that Mt. Shasta is known for. Park in the carport that is steps from the front door of the loft. Enjoy the 1 acre of flowers during the Spring, Summer and Fall. How about a two person shower with two shower heads!! Total relaxation awaits you here.

MT. SHASTA ACCEPTANCE....

A tour of Mt. Shasta, waterfalls, fresh spring-glacial water, fresh air was only the beginning of our short, short stay.
We covered over 1000 miles of territory from Sacramento-Mt. Shasta-Eureka.
Loved coming back to the cozy loft.
It offered the comforts of home.
We utilized the kitchen to the fullest-believe we are the first to home cook meals while the cool/damp weather remained to keep us in the "nesting" mode.
The binders of knowledge from local restaurants, great places to take photos of Mt. Shasta, hikes/walks (and estimated time frame of event) along w/ local birds were AMAZING. I found myself referring to these binders on numerous evenings.
We took time to "old school" and play Monopoly...and remember family.
Overall our stay was amazing...the town was amazing & the mountain was accepting.
We traveled from Sacramento to Redding (Trader Joe's demands a visit) through the passage to Mt. Shasta & to the town of Mr. Shasta.
We enjoyed our mystical visit.
The beauty abounds.
The warmth of John/Sandy was the key to set the mood.
Thank you to the two of you.
By the way...hope you enjoyed the Portabella cream soup.
Take Care.

A Gem find...

Went up for a week to celebrate the 4th of July, and thoroughly loved the experience. Frankly I hesitated to write a review in case more people found out about this truly hidden gem and then I would never be able to find a open slot again. ;)

The loft is just outside Mount Shasta City in a heavily wooded area, where you can hear the wildlife, listen to the trees rustle and you would never know you were less than a couple of minutes from downtown.

Inside the loft is exactly as described and had everything I needed - privacy, a deck with a great view of Mount Shasta, a sofa I napped in more times than I could imagine, and a kitchen I could cook meals in and a comfy bed. And the air conditioner unit since temps were unusually warm that year. :)

The hosts were gracious and generous with their advice and they provided information about the trails and the wildlife in the surrounding area and answered any questions I had. Their hospitality was truly the icing on the cake.

I haven't had the chance to head back up to the area since, but I would book this in a heartbeat if I was and it was available.

Cozy, charming and immaculate place to get away

I arrived after a very hectic week at work, exhausted and hyped up at the same time. You know that feeling when you want to unplug but you can't stop checking your phone every 15 seconds? So I got there, my mind still racing, and John came ambling out the front door of his and Sandy's beautiful home, directing me around the side to the private carport of the loft. I immediately felt my blood pressure start to drop. I don't know what it is about him, except to say he's a calming influence. As he helped me carry my things up the stairs, I explained that I was planning to hole up for the weekend and work on a personal project -- a book I've been trying to write but that keeps getting buried under the rest of life.
We chatted for a few minutes and he got me oriented (it's not exactly a big or complicated space), then left me to it. They've done a masterful job with the loft. The furnishings are just between modern and rustic, the kitchen is full of everything you'd need, the shower surprised me with two heads (not that I needed them, but still) and the bed is firm, comfortable and opens on a woodsy view. Although the loft is relatively close to the main house, it can be opened up with relative privacy because the windows are so well situated. The deck is private and the bird feeder first class. I love that John and Sandy took the time to make a binder full of pictures and descriptions of the birds at the feeder.
If you have some time on your hands, as I did, the small book collection is a well-chosen mix of American Indian, travel, natural science and assorted other topics. I found myself nibbling at this book buffet throughout the weekend.
Everything is relatively new and in great working order. You can tell a lot about the upkeep of a place by its blinds, I think. These are Hunter Douglas and they operate flawlessly.
I was happy for a rainy weekend that kept me in. I didn't even notice how quickly I stopped looking at my phone. And it was the most productive writing time I've had in years.
The Garden Loft would also be perfect for an adventurous couple, a romantic weekend or a sightseeing base. I've already told my wife we need to plan a time to go up together. I couldn't recommend it more highly. Just don't take the dates I want, OK?

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Garden Loft. All the descriptions and photos in the listing had captured our interest, but the reality was even better. It was roomy, comfortable, and beautifully decorated, including fine local artwork. Each part of the Loft had great views and unique touches, and the gardens, even in winter, were beautiful and inviting. John and Sandy, the owners, were warm and friendly, offering great tips on local hiking and entertainment. As hosts, they were an excellent balance between unobtrusive and available! We were treated to seeing Mt. Shasta with a pink and purple glow one evening, visible from the deck. John even kindly sent us home with some plant and tree starts from the garden. They are perfect living souvenirs that will remind us of our excellent stay at the Garden Loft!

Hidden Gem

Where do I even begin! Simply put, the garden loft is the only place we will stay in Mt. Shasta.

The location is close to town, yet you feel so peaceful and secluded. The hospitality of John and Sandy goes above and beyond the expected. They are friendly and gracious hosts with endless recommendations for the surrounding area. The loft is a cute, well-appointed and immaculate space. I don't think you will find a better place for the affordable price. The bed is comfortable with an amazing view when you wake up. We enjoyed fresh coffee on the porch and can't wait to go back in the summer to see the gardens in full bloom. The kitchen is fully equipped and worthy of a night of cooking at "home." We especially enjoyed the 2-headed shower! What a great surprise.

I have already recommended the garden loft to friends and we will definitely be back! Thanks again, John and Sandy for making us feel right at home.

Sandy and I propagate Shasta Lilies and we probably have the largest concentration (no. per acre) of Shasta Lilies in California and Oregon. When they bloom the fragrance rivals any flower from Hawaii. One bloom in a room will permeate an entire home.
