Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday villa in Alonissos - Folia
Luxury 5 Bedroom 5 Bathroom Seaside Villa with Pool & Stunning Views
Nestling in the hillside at the foot of a stunning historic hilltop village, Folia lies on a hand-picked plot perfectly situated a few minutes walk from the centre of the village and a short walk from the beach. The house is elegantly furnished with hardwood lacquered furniture, silk bedding and stone statues imported from China. With uninterrupted spectacular views to the sea over unspoilt landscape, this fully equipped villa is able to accommodate a large number of people in complete comfort.
Designed and built to the highest standards in sympathy with local architecture, Folia is surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens containing lemon, orange, fig, pomegranate, plum and peach trees, grape vines and flowering and ornamental plants. The house has a large private pool (10m x5m) with diving board and decked pergola with outdoor mattresses for al fresco relaxation. House features include home cinema, air conditioning, wireless internet, extensive terracing, vaulted chestnut ceilings, granite floors, barbecue, luxuriously appointed kitchen, mosquito blinds and sea views from 4 of the bedrooms.
Megalos Mourtias is the closest beach and is a 15 minute walk downhill (1,000m). It is a pebble beach with two lovely tavernas and sun beds on the beach and under olive groves. The sea here is calm, shallow and has sand underfoot making it ideal for families.
The 11 Sporades Islands are densely wooded and mountainous. Alonissos is one of only 4 inhabited islands in the group, and the only inhabited island in a marine conservation area. There are many beaches around the island and all are unspoilt and undeveloped. Some have tavernas such as Chrissi Milia and Leftos Yialos, great for lunch or dinner by the sea. Up the island is a picturesque port, Steni Vala where you will find some excellent seafood tavernas.
Alonissos has a large and picturesque area of protected forest; a lush mix of dense, scented pine, evergreen oak and a variety of fruit trees and bushes and it has been a walkers paradise for many years. Walking guides describe numerous marked walks across and around the island.
Sailing conditions around the Sporades are ideal with many interesting islands to be discovered. Some of the smaller uninhabited islands offer safe anchorage and secluded coves for swimming and fishing. The close proximity of these islands make this area a perfect place for short excursions. Yachts can be chartered from Alonissos, Skopelos and Skiathos and it is also possible to hire small motor boats from Patitiri harbour for day trips.
There are two excellent diving schools in Patitiri and Steni Vala and an underwater museum is being developed which is due to open in 2014 and will allow diving on an ancient wreck. The sea bed is among the richest in shipwrecks dating back as far as 5th century B.C. and the area around Alonissos and Skopelos has the second largest concentration of ancient and middle-aged wrecks in the world, the most famous being off the coast of Peristera island adjacent to Alonissos.
Alonissos is home to the internationally acclaimed centre of classical homoeopathy founded and run by the renowned homoeopath George Vithoulkas. Yoga and massage are also available locally in the Old Village.
Alonissos can be reached by charter flights to Skiathos between May and October. From Skiathos take the Flying Kat (80 minutes) or Ferry (1 hour 45 minutes). These run daily are can be booked online.
Scheduled flights are via Athens and Thessaloniki and travel from there is by coach to Aghios Contantinos or Volos and Flying Kat for 3 hours or an internal flight to Skiathos and the flying Kat from there.
We would recommend car or scooter hire for trips round the island, but this is not essential as beach and old village are both easily accessible on foot.

We have travelled extensively but once we found Alonissos, there was no doubt in our minds that we had found something very special, a hidden jewel. We love the friendly atmosphere on this island as well as a stunning natural environment to explore. The beaches are extremely quiet and the protected bays and calm clear water are simply divine. Alonissos is a very green island and we love discovering hidden beaches and woodland paths...of which there are many.
Folia purchased this villa in 2006
Why Folia chose Alonissos
We hand picked this plot from a large selection including one with it's own private beach frontage and did so because we love the proximity to the beautiful Old Village and Megalos Mourtias beach. We wanted to have space to relax on holiday with plenty of people so we built the house really spacious and comfortable to accommodate our extended family and guests in comfort.
What makes this villa unique
Proximity to Old Village, proximity to Megalos Mourtias Beach, swimming pool, multiple terraces for relaxing, landscaped walled gardens, cinema room, mosquito blinds throughout, extensively equipped cook's kitchen.
Guestbook comments from the owner
Dear Folia, you have been a complete joy to deal with from start to finish. We had an unbelievable time and explored every inch of the island (always happy to return back to Chora – you certainly picked the best spot). I will never forget my morning ritual of awakening before the family and opening shutters and doors and marvelling at that view. The only problem is now that I don’t think we will ever be happy renting a villa anywhere else again. What I have certainly realized is that to escape the crowds and beer boys you have to go to an island without an airport. For the first time ever the children really did not want to come back home to see friends or anything. It would be unlike us to go to the same place 2 years running but at the moment we can’t think of anywhere better so we may be one of your first for 2011 if you can stand not being there yourselves again. Thanks for helping us make such beautiful memories. Best Wishes
