Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes) was one of the founders of this 6,373-yard par 70 course set in a breathtaking location in 1904. The superior front nine snakes through valleys over a large hollow of dry sandy heath overlooked by Gibbet Hill. The par threes third and sixth holes are memorable. There are elevation changes and the ultra-fast greens tend to be high above some fairways. The holes are moulded into a dramatic setting. The walk from the fifth green to the sixth tee is a stamina-tester. The return holes are situated on a hillside plateau. The most fearsome tee shot comes at the 17th to a sharply sloping fairway.
