Fantastic house in beautiful setting.
Fantastic location with a wealth of family activities for which one week wasn't enough time to do even one third of what was available.
House is comfortable for 4, spacious and reasonably well appointed with a rustic, rural charm of its own. Pictures and listing description very accurate. Communication with the owner was good throughout and the key holder was there to meet us on arrival and at the agreed time of our departure. We would be happy to rent this property again in future and would recommend it.
Local (and not so local) attractions were varied. Salzburg is a must see and less than an hour drive from the house; Mirabell park and garden, the Mozart House, Hohensalzburg Castle and a lazy stroll around around the Altstadt will easily take up an entire day.
Karkogel's Sommerrodelbahn (summer sled-rail) and the Erlebnisbad (lido) are two highlights of Abtenau; where you can also find live, outdoor traditional music on Friday and Saturday evenings in the summer months. Karkogel hiking trails (accessed via the same Gondola lift as for the Rodelbahn) are not too hard on the knees, and if you pick your route, 90 minutes later you can be sat at a mountain hut/cafe enjoying a cold drink, local quisine and breathtaking views.
Other local highlights included both the river Lamer and river Salzach gorges, Postalm scenic drive, Gosausee (lake) and cable-car, Hallein Salt Mine and Urzeitwald (Dinosaur themed forest play area - bring a change of clothes for kids!) near Gosau. Further afield, both Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Trieste (Italy) are worthy of a visit.
Be warned! A surprising number of shops, cafes and restaurants in small towns/rural areas of Austria DO NOT accept Credit Cards; only certain Bank Cards and, of course, cash. Sunday opening of shops such a Spar, Aldi (Hofer), etc. is NOT the norm in Austria, as it is in the UK.
