About Pat and Tod O'Connell

Pat and I moved to Essex MT in 2003. We had both worked in Glacier Park for 4 years in the late 60's and later went to the U of MT in Missoula. We both love the Glacier Park area and moved back here from St. Paul after the kids left the house. They found us shortly thereafter and come out frequently to visit. Pat and I love the mountains and the 4 seasons and enjoy going into Glacier hiking and animal watching.

Tod O'Connell

Pat and Tod O'Connell purchased this house in 2010

Why Pat and Tod O'Connell chose Essex

The Essex Mountain House came up for sale in 2010. It was formerly owned by the Great Northern Railroad and used by the roadmaster years ago. It was moved to this site, I'm told, 30 to 40 years ago. We liked the look, layout and history of the place and bought it when it came up for sale. It was in need of TLC so we totally updated the kitchen and bathrooms and did a lot of finish work while retaining the a lot of the old character. We're both really happy with how it turned out.

What makes this house unique

Totally updated large kitchen, laundry and a full bath upstairs and downstairs make this 2 story house great for families and groups. A big yard on a double lot allows plenty of room for bbq's and relaxing on the property. Essex is located half way between East and West Glacier and across the highway from the Walton entrance to Glacier. We're near the Amtrack train platform so there's great train viewing also.

We really enjoyed our short trip to Glacier. The house was perfect for our needs, great location and Tod was very kind and pleasant to speak with. The house was well stocked and clean. Especially liked the fact that there was a washer/dryer in the home. We hope to come back again next year. Thank you!

Owner's Response: Gemma,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review and especially, thank you and your family for staying at the Essex Mountain House.
We enjoyed meeting you and your family and the bag of berries the kids left us. We'll get a few more and make syrup for pancakes.
It is really important to us that the families and guests enjoy their stay at the house and and it's obvious that you did.
Don't forget that you and people you recommend get a $50.00 discount on a two or more day stay if you can come back in the future.
Thanks again and enjoy the rest of the summer.

Wonderful!

  • 5 out of 5
I can't say enough about how great the rental house was, or how wonderful the owners were. The home was very clean, and and well stocked with everything we forgot at home. If you don't mind a beautiful drive, it is perfectly located between East and West Glacier. At night, you can relax by the camp fire or yard is big enough to enjoy games with your family. The home fit our 2 families perfectly, and our teenage crowd loved it as much as we did.

Owner's Response: Gretchen,
Pat and I are extremely appreciative of your really fabulous review. But, even more than that, we thank you for staying with us.
When we refurbished this house to make a vacation rental in 2012, we thought it would be good for small groups and families and we are happy you could be one of the families. We stacked the place based on things we needed when we vacationed with our kids many years ago.
Don't forget that if you get a chance to return you (or people you recommend) get a $50.00 discount for a two or more day stay.
Thanks again and enjoy the rest of the summer and year.

Beautiful Mountain Cabin

  • 5 out of 5
This cabin was originally the home of the Roadmaster for the Great Northern Railway. It has been completely and carefully refurbished inside and is very clean and comfortable. It has three bedrooms (two upstairs) and two bathrooms. The whole cabin is in excellent condition.

Essex, Montana (where the cabin is located) was originally built by the Great Northern as a small yard on the western approach to Marias Pass. The yard is still used by the railroad, now called BNSF. The old crew quarters have been transformed into the Izaak Walton Inn, which is a short walk from the cabin and has a very nice restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel itself is lovely and open year around.

The cabin is very secluded but is fairly close to the railroad tracks. If you love trains, this is an almost perfect property. Access to both East and West Glacier is easy, and hiking trails, rivers and streams within the park are a short distance away. I would recommend this cabin to railfans, fishermen, cross country skiers, families wanting to tour Glacier National Park and couples wanting a quiet and relaxing sojourn.

The owners were most helpful and friendly, and they respected our privacy.

Owner's Response: John,
Thank you very much for your kind words and for staying with us. You gave the house history better than we can. It's important to us that our guests enjoy their stay and we try to make the place one that we would like like to stay in on our trips. Your comments are important to us and we really can't thank you enough. I hope you get a chance to return and we do give a $50.00 discount on a two day stay for returning guests or those they recommend to us. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Has it all

  • 5 out of 5
I don’t usually write reviews but this place is very special. Everything stated in the other reviews is spot on. This “cabin” has all the comforts and modern conveniences. We stayed 3 nights in late September and unfortunately the weather was transitioning toward winter. However, the weather couldn’t dim the beauty of GNP and only served to highlight the warmth and coziness of the cabin. The owners/hosts, Tod and Pat, are like a teenager’s dream parents: transparent, except when you need them. I look forward to returning to this beautiful place and staying longer.

Comfortable and Well-Equipped!

  • 5 out of 5
My husband and I traveled with another couple to see Glacier National Park and desired a place that had character and warmth, was clean and tidy, and was located where travel to both sides of the park was accessed easily. We found all those qualities in this property. This home has charm. My friends especially enjoyed the trains and went out to the station to meet the conductor and chat. Keep in mind - GNP area is huge; however, with this home being just off highway 2 we could be on our way either to the east with trips to Many Glacier and Waterton or to the west with trips to Going to the Sun Road, Columbia Falls and Whitefish. This is a great place to stay if you want your own place away from the hustle and bustle of the park, want to be in something different than a home like yours in the burbs, enjoy trains, and want to stay in one place for a week while seeing as much of the area as possible. Thanks Tod and Pat! PS - Cookies were GREAT!
