I am a family dairy farmer and we also farm other crops in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, Canada. We love to get away once a year to Roatan to our little piece of paradise where family visits with us whenever they can.
Wendy Cunningham purchased this cottage in 2012
Easy access with the flights out of Canada and arrival in Roatan and to escape a few weeks of our Canadian winters.
we enjoy coffee out on the palapa and deck as well as a cold one at sunset and ready ourselves for another day in paradise.
If you are looking to get away from it all, this is it. Beautiful remote beach which I found a bit eerie right at first, but totally embraced by the end of the 1st day! The house was perfect for a trip with my son; sister and brother-in-law. They had total privacy upstairs in the room while we had the TV (which was great movies and such for my 15 year old). Gorgeous sunsets and a great breeze on the palapa/deck. Mario brought us lobsters and fresh fish too (thanks for that review!!) Wilford, Wendy, and the other staff were very helpful and attentive and I felt safe knowing they were there! Now, some things I wished I'd known. "Just get a card/minutes for the phone" turned into a 2 day ordeal as none of the little stores had Claro cards in stock; not even the Claro store had any, so that was a frustrating adventure. Also, Claro sent constant text advertisement messages! Secondly, Turquoise Bay is NOT the place to dive. They charged 2x as much as any of the West End dive shops...adding a 19% tax and equipment rental to EACH dive. We ended up paying $140 more for 2 dives than we paid with Splash inn on the West End. I was very upset that I didn't research this more. It wouldn't have been that bad if the dives had not been just awful. They crammed 9 of us on a boat suited for 3-4 people and the dive master was the worst I've seen. I have sent a review into TripAdvisor for that. On the West End, I recommend Captain Clay for fishing charters. He did an excellent job and we had 4 days worth of fresh tuna. Very reasonable rates compared to the large company charters. Groceries at Eldon's were very reasonable for an island as well and a good selection. The water is too shallow for swimming, snorkeling, or fishing off the dock but there is a kayak you can rent to venture out. Property is well maintained. The only complaint I had about the property was that the bedding was kinda dingy and stained, but not enough so that I wouldn't go back.
We stayed for a week in February. The amenities are basic, but the private beach with dock and palapa and very pretty setting are great. The water is too shallow for swimming off the beach - we did snorkel off the dock and saw some sea life, but there are some stinging jellies in the weeds, so be careful - swim in the pool instead to cool off. We rented a pickup, you definitely want that or a 4x4 to get in and out the rutted gravel road down to the property. Turquoise Bay Resort is right next door (but you will need to drive there) which offers dive and snorkel trips. Cal's Restaurant is a short drive on the main road, and it is terrific - but not open every day. Pick up groceries on the way from the airport, and arrange with Wendy who is a great chef and will cook native specialties, you probably won't want to drive into town every day for meals. We arranged with Mario to bring us fresh-caught lobsters several evenings. Bring DEET for the sand flies, and lounge on the breezy upper deck to avoid them.
This place is extremely remote...beautiful view but if the sand flies don't eat you alive the mosquitos will. Property was in need of some tlc last year and some decent deck furniture. Don't leave any food out or you will find a million new friends to share it with (ants were unstoppable). Hopefully this property has seen some upgrades recently...even taking old (non-working) fridge out of bedroom would be a start.
Spectacular views, away from everything I recommend renting a 4x4 car if you plan on visiting West Bay or other parts of the island dirt road to get to property. Cottage is in good shape with central AC downstairs and window AC upstairs nice deck on both floors. Property is clean and have security Great bone fishing from the flats to the right in front of the house.
Bring mosquito deet!
situated next door to the Turquoise Bay Resort where there is availability to go on dive and snorkel tours and also the Resort has a good dining room.
