Jardim do Mar : Jardim is a historic, unspoilt Madeiran village. It is small and compact - only a few hundred metres from one end to the other - and its highest point is about 50 metres above sea level. The road to the village leads to the car park and also down one side of the village, passing a smart restaurant and on to the jetty. .The village centre has a pretty square with fountains , a small hotel and a beautiful church.
Most villagers reach their homes on foot by the cobbled alleys spreading from the square. These alleys are interspersed by small plots for growing bananas, grapes and vegetables and many houses have pretty gardens with bouganvilleas and hibiscus. The villa sits at the edge of the village with stunning views of the sea and huge cliffs, facing west towards the sunsets over the ocean. The steps down from the villa lead down to a pebbled beach on the one side and on the other side the beginning of the lovely promenade along the sea and around the villag to the jetty
Activities: Western Madeira is very unspoilt with spectacular scenery for sight seeing and walking. Levada walks are exceptional and are generally easy (some can be precipitous!) but other walks usually demanding. A car is needed for nearly all walks.
It is possible to arrange boat trips and even big game fishing from the marina in nearby Calheta, where there is also an art gallery.Calheta has the best sandy beach in Madeira. There are a number of outdoor sea swimming pools notably at Porto Moniz. There is an intimiidating cable car ride from the cliff top just off the West coast road to Porto Moniz.
Further afield there are a number of botanic gardens, museums and a beautful cathedral in Funchal. There is an 18 hole golf course about 45 minutes from the villa and a second 27 hole course further east. Ferry trips from Funchal to the nearby island of Porto Santo can be arranged in Calheta.
However It is still difficult to beat walking around the friendly and beautiful village of Jardim !
Staying in the villa: The owners of the villa frequently stay there and are in regular touch with the two English speaking people who look after guests and the property. One cleans the house and lives just outside the village and the other lives in the viilage and looks after the pool and garden as well as being on hand to answer any questions or sort out any problems. On arrival you will be met in the car park and taken to the villa and shown around and if necessary given a hand with the luggage
The villa is in the village but on a cliff edge. It is very private and and its breath taking sea views are unimpeded on all sides. In order to manage the few steps to the property it is best to keep shopping down to amounts that can be carried in one go and to make some use of the local shop. At night the only sound you can hear is the sea.
There are excellent walking guides available in the villa and we provide our suggestions on the nicest places to visit near the village.
