Bagni di Lucca has been known since Roman times and became popular in the 11th century because of the many thermal springs, with the extraordinary curative and regenerative power of its thermal waters, Bagni di Lucca became one of the major thermal spas in Europe. It was an elite of European tourism and a welcomed meeting place for the nobility and diplomats of all Europe.It became a destination of the most distinguished guests, among which, the poets Byron, Shelley, Carducci, Pascoli, the writers like Dumas and Couperus, the musicians like Strauss, Listz, Papagani, Puccini and the politicans and regents like Tsar Demidoff from Russia, Napoleon Bonaparte, Queen Margherita and the popes Sixtus IV and V.
