Perfect place for family vacation!

  • 5 out of 5
We had wonderful holiday at Bagnoregio's idylic town, thanks to our host Kalle who took so good care of us!

The house is big enough for two families with children to have relaxing holiday just 1,5 hours from Rome. House itself was clean and comfortable with all modern equipment available! Mostly we spend our time outside but in the evening it was nice to watch ongoing world cup matches via satellite-tv and use WIFI to catch-up with the world.

Outside activities are just great, mountain bikes to have rides around the region. Perfect pool, deep enough for children to have diving competitions. Fresh apricots straight from the tree and vegetables from the garden. Wonderful barbeque facilities where to grill for instance T-bone steaks freshly bought from the local butcher.

You may also want to invite Francesca, a local lady from the village, to come to cook for you a regional meal. For us, she prepared a full 4 course meal with fresh fish from the Lake Bolsena and tiramisu. In fact we were so pleased that we invited her twice! The second time we ate meat as for main course. Price was very affordable and easily arranged, especially for us with children.

Besides Orvieto and Lake Bolsena, we recommend to visit some local Winery.
Thanks to Kalle, he arranged for us a visit to Trappolini winery where we found wonderful Paterno redwine. Needless to say what we brought home as souvenir. Also we recommend Kalle’s own “homemade” produced olive oil with excellent quality!

Portiglione is perfect match for you, if you wish to have some privacy, modern equipment around, wonderful views, activities for you and the children, excellent food and wine and easy access by car to everywhere.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Miika - it was a pleasure to see how you and all the other members of your group enjoyed your stay in my house.

A word to my olive oil: A long time ago all the farmers picked the olives after the 8th of december but latest studies showed that if you pick them very early (end of october) the oil is much better - wonderful fresh taste.
The quantity of oil is less but the quality is much better.
And another very important thing is that the olives picked up during the day must be pressed in the following night to have the best result of taste and freshness - I am respecting all these rules to have the best olive oil you can have - of course I am not using chemical fertilizer - all natural and that's why my oil is biological olive oil.

I am sure we will meet again - thank you and the rest of the gang for the review.

A peaceful haven with plenty to do nearby.

  • 5 out of 5
Portiglione is a little piece of heaven on earth. Kalle is a great and generous host and told us lots about the area including places to walk from the house. We had lots of contact by email, before and during our stay, and his replies were prompt and helpful. The house is well equipped but anything we needed he was happy to provide. Kalle visits to maintain the pool but leaves you to it, otherwise. Although, you can often find him working nearby on his orto.

The house is comfortable and cosy and the views are stunning. The garden is lovely and full of flowers, with the olive grove below - great for wandering or just lazing and looking at Civita. We also had free run of the veg garden, so we cut fresh salad and herbs every day. The superb pool has easy steps but there is no shallow end to the main part of the pool or fences, so very little ones might need watching.

If you go, do take the opportunity to invite Francesca, a lovely lady from the village, to come and cook for you. We asked her to shop and cook for a simple but regional meal. We had 4 delicious courses including corregone, the special freshwater fish from Lake Bolsena, and a tiramisu to die for! We paid what we would for a 3 course meal in a restaurant and had plenty of tasty leftovers for the next day. I even had a free Italian lesson while she cooked!

We were two couples, so used the lower bedroom (Kalle calls this the apartment). It has a separate entrance and it's own bathroom, with a large bedroom and kitchen corner. Our friends were In the main house where there are 2 doubles on first floor which share a bathroom on the ground floor or can also use the utility room with a shower, basin & WC. There is another bedroom, again with its own entrance but no bathroom, right at the top of the house, probably only suitable for teenagers.

Bagnoregio has handy shops & restaurants. We didn't go to Rome but this is easy by train. Orvieto and the beautiful lake at Bolsena are less than 30 mins away. Pitigliano is a little further but worth the trip, especially the hidden Etruscan pathways (Vie cave).

If you visit you might get to meet Diesel - or il gatto pazzo as we called him - the house cat who looks at you sweetly through the window but beats up his placid mother just for fun. You might also meet the free-range pigs from the Sardinian neighbour - a bit of a surprise on a dark night halfway up the lane. What I can say for sure is that we will definitely be going back to Portiglione!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for this review Jo - it is always my ambition to have one hundred percent satisfied guests and if there are things that I can make better I am asking all guests to tell me - it is most important to talk about things - about everything.
All guests are invited to use the small vegetable garden nearby the pool and also the huge vegetable garden down by the stream - when you pass to go to the villa feel free to take as much as you can eat.

Advert does not do it justice-STUNNING

  • 5 out of 5
My wife and I stayed here for two extraordinary weeks with our daughters (17,12 and 20mths) There are no reviews and so I had to write one, the villa and owners Kalle & Ingrid unquestionably deserve it. This is a beautiful, well-equipped, roomy villa with a huge amount of glorious private outdoor space; all set in an extraordinary location- it was so much more than we expected from the advert and photos.
The photos do not do it justice. The villa is located in a lush green valley with private gardens surrounding it. There are olive groves on the one side, woodland on the other and your backdrop is a side on view of the ?Dying City? it is simply stunning. (google civita bagnoregio for images of this medieval town) This is a non touristy location which all the local facilities you need supermarket, butchers, bakers, pharmacy...gelaterie!! and has excellent access to other parts of italy (we did day trips to Rome which was an hour by train and Florence 1hr 40 in the car)
There is?lots?of space and the gardens/pool are well kept. In addition to the main gardens and pool there is also a covered area on the drive with table football, table tennis, 3 bikes and an elliptical machine?.no we didn?t use it! The gardens go all round the villa and beyond.
The inside of the villa is also much larger than it looks from the photos and is amazingly well stocked; tons of glasses, crockery and utensils, towels, satellite TV, DVD, Stereo, sofas for 5, wifi, dishwasher, washing machine, cot etc
Lastly I must mention the wonderful owners. Our arrival was complicated by some dodgy directions from a traffic warden which meant we ended up stuck down a terrifying dirt track on the other side of the valley. One phone call and Kalle and Ingrid turned up immediately in a truck and their 4x4 and literally rescued us. They towed us up the side of the valley and back to civilisation without any fuss and more importantly, extremely good humour! After being shown around the villa we were completely left in peace though if ever we needed anything they were always available. We really couldn't have asked for better owners.
What more can I say, this is an extraordinarily lovely villa in a wonderful unspoiled part of Italy. We would not hesitate to recommend this villa and thank you again, we feel incredibly lucky to have had our holiday there. Hopefully one day we will be able to return.

Stunning view, beautiful garden, perfect host

  • 5 out of 5
We had a wonderful holiday in Kalle's villa. We were four adults and five children (4,5,6,7 and 13) and the house had plenty of space for everyone, had all the conveniences we needed and nice decor. But the main attraction is the beautifully landscaped garden, the pool and the view of Civita di Bagnoregio (the dying city). We all loved the garden so much that we didn't go on as many trips as planned as we couldn't bear leaving our newfound Paradise. When we did go out and explore the region, Kalle had a lot of good, local tips. We had a fun night out at a gnocchi festival in a nearby village we would never have found ourselves. Kalle is a very friendly, helpful host with a great sense of humour. We can heartily recommend a stay in Kalle's villa for anyone who wants a relaxing holiday in private surroundings in a rural region full of charm and authenticity - and fantastic views no matter where you go. The villa, situated in the famous Valle dei Calanchi, with the best view on the 'dying city' Civita di Bagnoregio, is the perfect place to relax and because of its unique location can be used as a base to explore Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio. The House is situated 3 km from the quiet, medieval village Bagnoregio, in which there are several shops, petrol stations, supermarkets, Banks with ATM and a Post Office. There are several good restaurants in the area including at the Romantica Pucci where you can taste many good local dishes. There is a pizzeria and several small bars. There are facilities for playing tennis, horse-riding, fishing, walking and cycling, information can be found in the Town Hall (Comune). Bagnoregio is well located in the area where Lazio, Umbria and Toscana meet. In addition to being convenient to cities such as Orvieto (only 15 min by car), Rome, Florence, Siena, Perugia, Todi and Viterbo, Lake Bolsena, with its black sanded beaches and water sports, is less than 10 min drive.
