Wonderful rural Italy

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed here for a week at the end of August and had a really wonderful holiday. We were a group of seven: a family of 5 (children aged 6, 4 and 1) and two grandparents. The house is beautifully kept and has all the modern comforts you could wish for, lots of clean linen and towels, lovely spacious kitchen with dining table, instant hot water etc. There are 2 bedrooms in the main part of the house, one further bedroom upstairs but only accessed by an outside staircase and the fourth bedroom is part of an 'annex' with its own little kitchen, bathroom and front door.

The gardens are stunning; landscaped lawn areas, an olive grove, vegetable garden (which supplied us with tomatoes aubergines beans and peppers), shady areas under trees and plenty of sun loungers, sun umbrellas, outside dining tables and chairs, traditional pizza oven and barbecue. And the whole place looks straight across a deep wooded valley to the dying city. It is completely quiet day and night except for cicada song. The photos do not do the place justice!

Although the house is isolated and peaceful it is very easy to reach places of interest. We made two trips to Lake Bolsena, where we sailed, and Orvieto (the caves and underground tunnels there are amazing and even suitable for our 4 year-old). Both are about 25 minutes away. And Bagnoregio is a steep 20-30 minute walk away, where you will find shops, banks, gelateries! We could not recommend this beautiful, rural retreat more.

Owner's Response: Hello Isabel
Thank you for the review - I am glad that you and your family loved the place.
Being the last guests for this year I waited for your comment and as all the others you gave a 5 star one and this makes me happy - soon the olive harvest will begin and after that I am starting to do some renovation work - Portiglione must offer the same or better level as this year because I want only 5 stars reviews.
This area around Civita di Bagnoregio is not so well known but I think it is one of the nicest parts of Italy with all the possibilities for spending some holidays.
All the famous cities around like Rome, Orvieto, Siena, Assisi, Florence and many more are inviting you to do some sightseeing and also the lake Bolsena where you can rent our sailing boat or having sailing lessons (also lessons on a catamaran or surfboard) is worth to be visited - our friend Alessandro will do this job on a small private beach - very nice place as you know Isabel.
All the best to you and your lovely family.

Beautiful villa with amazing views!

  • 5 out of 5
Thank you and well done to Kalle for a very well equipped and carefully looked after villa. We had a lovely fortnight there. It is clean and well equipped, with all the things you need for a relaxing self catering break. There are plenty of useful cooking utensils, so you can cook easily. The beds are comfortable, and Kalle provided plenty of towels. There is loads of space so you can relax and spread out around the house. There is table tennis and table football, which along with the TV, DVD player and wifi of course, kept our teenage sons happy!
However the most incredible thing is the amazing setting...the view is incredible, and it is so peaceful. You really can just sit around reading, enjoying the sun, relaxing by the pool and enjoying a glass of local wine, along with the vegetables from Kalle’s garden. We didn’t just sit around however; there is plenty to do in the area. We managed trips to Civita, Lake Bolsena, Orvieto, Assisi, Siena to name a few! There is a good supermarket in Bagnoregio, along with a pharmacy, bank, petrol station, etc.
Overall an amazing holiday in an incredible villa – if you can go I would highly recommend it – Kalle’s villa is lovely and he really looks after his guests. He and Ingrid were helpful and kind to us when we arrived later than planned and hungry, and ensured that we had all we needed. Thank you!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this wonderful review Alison.

As I want to see my guests always happy I think it is very important that they never feel left alone. It is a fortune that I am living in a small house only a couple of hundred meters far away from Portiglione so that I can always interfere if there is a problem or if guests needs some information or help as my last guest who's car was broken and he needed a lift to the train station in Orvieto.
I must say thanks to my guests like you because after 30 years that I am living in this area I "forgot" how beautiful the views around my house are!

Tanti saluti e mille grazie ancora

Idyllic summer holiday

  • 5 out of 5
Beautiful setting for a lovely house. The other reviews have expressed it very well... Peaceful countryside, complete relaxation, super town nearby with everything you need. We used the bikes every day to climb the hill to Bagnoregio, rewarding ourselves with a treat from the bakery to go with the garden's produce - and of course the pleasure of the freewheel back to the house. Other super towns nearby and easy train access to Rome if you can bear to be away from the house. When you are at the Civita looking down towards Portiglione you won't quite believe that you are so lucky to be calling it home for your holidays! Enjoy!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review Mark
Of course it makes me very proud and happy because the best thing for me is when my guests are satisfied with the choice of their holiday home.
Before I started to rent out my villa I bought all things people need to stay well and I bought also (because I don't like the cheap plastic garden equipment) a good quality of garden furnitures - then I went into my own house as a guest to see if there is anything I forgot (and there were a few things in the kitchen missing) to offer to my future clients and that's why there is everything holiday makers needs to spend some wonderful days in Portiglione.
Tanti saluti to your whole family!

Perfect place for family vacation!

  • 5 out of 5
We had wonderful holiday at Bagnoregio's idylic town, thanks to our host Kalle who took so good care of us!

The house is big enough for two families with children to have relaxing holiday just 1,5 hours from Rome. House itself was clean and comfortable with all modern equipment available! Mostly we spend our time outside but in the evening it was nice to watch ongoing world cup matches via satellite-tv and use WIFI to catch-up with the world.

Outside activities are just great, mountain bikes to have rides around the region. Perfect pool, deep enough for children to have diving competitions. Fresh apricots straight from the tree and vegetables from the garden. Wonderful barbeque facilities where to grill for instance T-bone steaks freshly bought from the local butcher.

You may also want to invite Francesca, a local lady from the village, to come to cook for you a regional meal. For us, she prepared a full 4 course meal with fresh fish from the Lake Bolsena and tiramisu. In fact we were so pleased that we invited her twice! The second time we ate meat as for main course. Price was very affordable and easily arranged, especially for us with children.

Besides Orvieto and Lake Bolsena, we recommend to visit some local Winery.
Thanks to Kalle, he arranged for us a visit to Trappolini winery where we found wonderful Paterno redwine. Needless to say what we brought home as souvenir. Also we recommend Kalle’s own “homemade” produced olive oil with excellent quality!

Portiglione is perfect match for you, if you wish to have some privacy, modern equipment around, wonderful views, activities for you and the children, excellent food and wine and easy access by car to everywhere.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Miika - it was a pleasure to see how you and all the other members of your group enjoyed your stay in my house.

A word to my olive oil: A long time ago all the farmers picked the olives after the 8th of december but latest studies showed that if you pick them very early (end of october) the oil is much better - wonderful fresh taste.
The quantity of oil is less but the quality is much better.
And another very important thing is that the olives picked up during the day must be pressed in the following night to have the best result of taste and freshness - I am respecting all these rules to have the best olive oil you can have - of course I am not using chemical fertilizer - all natural and that's why my oil is biological olive oil.

I am sure we will meet again - thank you and the rest of the gang for the review.

A peaceful haven with plenty to do nearby.

  • 5 out of 5
Portiglione is a little piece of heaven on earth. Kalle is a great and generous host and told us lots about the area including places to walk from the house. We had lots of contact by email, before and during our stay, and his replies were prompt and helpful. The house is well equipped but anything we needed he was happy to provide. Kalle visits to maintain the pool but leaves you to it, otherwise. Although, you can often find him working nearby on his orto.

The house is comfortable and cosy and the views are stunning. The garden is lovely and full of flowers, with the olive grove below - great for wandering or just lazing and looking at Civita. We also had free run of the veg garden, so we cut fresh salad and herbs every day. The superb pool has easy steps but there is no shallow end to the main part of the pool or fences, so very little ones might need watching.

If you go, do take the opportunity to invite Francesca, a lovely lady from the village, to come and cook for you. We asked her to shop and cook for a simple but regional meal. We had 4 delicious courses including corregone, the special freshwater fish from Lake Bolsena, and a tiramisu to die for! We paid what we would for a 3 course meal in a restaurant and had plenty of tasty leftovers for the next day. I even had a free Italian lesson while she cooked!

We were two couples, so used the lower bedroom (Kalle calls this the apartment). It has a separate entrance and it's own bathroom, with a large bedroom and kitchen corner. Our friends were In the main house where there are 2 doubles on first floor which share a bathroom on the ground floor or can also use the utility room with a shower, basin & WC. There is another bedroom, again with its own entrance but no bathroom, right at the top of the house, probably only suitable for teenagers.

Bagnoregio has handy shops & restaurants. We didn't go to Rome but this is easy by train. Orvieto and the beautiful lake at Bolsena are less than 30 mins away. Pitigliano is a little further but worth the trip, especially the hidden Etruscan pathways (Vie cave).

If you visit you might get to meet Diesel - or il gatto pazzo as we called him - the house cat who looks at you sweetly through the window but beats up his placid mother just for fun. You might also meet the free-range pigs from the Sardinian neighbour - a bit of a surprise on a dark night halfway up the lane. What I can say for sure is that we will definitely be going back to Portiglione!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for this review Jo - it is always my ambition to have one hundred percent satisfied guests and if there are things that I can make better I am asking all guests to tell me - it is most important to talk about things - about everything.
All guests are invited to use the small vegetable garden nearby the pool and also the huge vegetable garden down by the stream - when you pass to go to the villa feel free to take as much as you can eat.

The villa, situated in the famous Valle dei Calanchi, with the best view on the 'dying city' Civita di Bagnoregio, is the perfect place to relax and because of its unique location can be used as a base to explore Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio. The House is situated 3 km from the quiet, medieval village Bagnoregio, in which there are several shops, petrol stations, supermarkets, Banks with ATM and a Post Office. There are several good restaurants in the area including at the Romantica Pucci where you can taste many good local dishes. There is a pizzeria and several small bars. There are facilities for playing tennis, horse-riding, fishing, walking and cycling, information can be found in the Town Hall (Comune). Bagnoregio is well located in the area where Lazio, Umbria and Toscana meet. In addition to being convenient to cities such as Orvieto (only 15 min by car), Rome, Florence, Siena, Perugia, Todi and Viterbo, Lake Bolsena, with its black sanded beaches and water sports, is less than 10 min drive.
