Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday apartment in Montecastelli - Montecastelli HolidayHouses
The apartments are situated in the historical ancient part of Montecastelli.

The village of Montecastelli was built in the 13th century between the Peacock Valley (Val di Pavone) and the Cecina Valley, on the top of a hill 504 mt high. Its characteristic houses made of local stones give it a particular atmosphere. The streets are two ellictic lines one above the other on the top of the hill. Montecastelli nestles in the beautiful Peacock Valley (Val di Pavone), encircled by fine woodlands, hills and meadows. The valley is home to a wide variety of animals, birds, butterflies and rare wild plants: snowdrops, hellebore, anemone, narcissus, cyclamen, wild orchids, primrose, brooms, wild cherry trees and arbutus unedo to name just a few. Montecastelli lies 2km from the Peacock River (Pavone) where it is possible to bath, to swim, to make long walks in a wonderful canyon until you reach the confluence with the Cecina River. In case of health problems an English speaking family doctor is nearby.

Cities of art – thermal baths: According to the UNESCO, 60% of World's Heritage is concentrated in Italy, half of which is to be found in Florence alone! Florence is one hour from Montecastelli, Pisa 80 minutes, Volterra 40 minutes, Siena 40 minutes, San Gimignano 40 minutes, Colle Val d'Elsa 25 minutes, Lucca 1 hour 45 minutes, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina 15 minutes, Montecastelli 5 minutes, not forgetting the little discovered gem of Massa Marittima,45 minutes. But remember: the lesser known Medieval and Etruscan towns of Tuscany hold its real charm and beauty. Hundreds of churches, museums, art galleries, buildings, as well as street markets, shops and restaurants, hidden in narrow streets of little villages, are waiting for you to discover and explore them. Very old and beautiful thermal baths were you can relax yourself are 40 to 90 minutes far: Bagno Vignoni, Petriolo, Casciana Terme, Venturina.

Tuscan wines, Tuscan olive oil, chestnuts: Around Montecastelli it is possible to find high quality wines at really reasonable prices, in Castelnuovo VC (15 minutes) there is a good Enoteca. Montalcino with its Brunello and Rosso is not far. It is possible to buy good olive oil in many villages. In Castelnuovo Val di Cecina there is in October a chestnut fair. In San Gimignano there is in November a Festival for finest olive oils (olio extra vergine). During the early spring you can find wild asparagus along the paths. Three good local restaurants at very reasonable prices are 5 minutes from Le Pietraie, many others are in the nearby villages.

In spring the hills are getting more and more green every day, with the white blossom of the big wild cherry trees, you can walk among wild primrose, or wild cyclamens, or anemones. There is a field full of yellow narcissus. Every part of the valley has its own flowers. In summer to walk along the River Pavone is something very very special.

GOLF: You can reach several Golf Tuscan Clubs in 1/2-2 hours. They are near the principle Art cities of Tuscany, and the time you need to reach them is among the beautiful tuscan hills.

In Tuscany, thanks to a warm climate, and surrounded by the beautiful landscapes, it's possible to play all the year long. By the way, the best period to play golf in Tuscany, is in spring and autumn when the temperature not so high as in summer, let you play during the central hours of the day.The Golf Clubs around us are near FIRENZE:Golf Club Bellosguardo Vinci (Vinci); Golf Club Centanni, Bagno a Ripoli; Circolo dell’Ugolino, Impruneta; Golf & Country Club Poggio dei Medici, Scarperia; Castelfalfi Golf & Country Club, Castelfalfi; Contry Club Le Pavoniere, Prato; near SIENA:Circolo Golf L’Abbadia, Colle Val d’Elsa. Near PISA: Country Club Cosmopolitan, Tirrenia; Montecatini Golf, Monsummano Terme; Golf Club Fontevivo, San Miniato; Golf Club Vicopelago (Lucca); near AREZZO:Golf Club Casentino, Pop

The medieval town of Montecastelli Pisano is situated in the Pavone valley, not more than one hour's drive from Florence, Siena, Pisa, Volterra, San Gimignano, the Tyrrenian Sea.

Two very clean Rivers give opportunities to swim. You can swim and stay all day there, making a barbecue near the water at night and singing around the fire, waiting for the rising moon. In June you can walk under the bright stars, surrounded by millions of fire-flies. In autumn the oak forests turn to orange brown and will keep their leaves until December. In 1-2 hours you can be in the best Golf clubs of Tuscany.

elegant and homely in hilltop village

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 21 May 2012 Date of Stay: March 2012
We were delighted to find this beautifully restored, elegant ,comfortable apartment in a hilltop village.
It's unusual to be able to combine our interests in walking, swimming, botany, painting ,photography and cooking with general arts and culture in such a small area.
Only the church bells and laughter of children to disturb the quiet whilst eating lunches of local produce and regional specialities (from the near by market )on the sunny terrace
We were well placed to visit Siena and San Gimignano as well as the near-by villages of Radicondoli,
San Dalmazio and the gardens of Solheo and Venzano
Although our stay was quite short it was relaxing and rejuvenating
We hope to return soon , explore a little more and meet up with the welcoming and friendly people in this region.

waking up in a hilltop village

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 13 May 2012 Date of Stay: April 2012
Having stayed in the area before, we were attracted to the idea of staying in Montecastelli. It's a really charming village, quite small, 100% historic, and commanding a superb view over the surrounding hills and the Pavone valley. You park on the edge of the village so traffic isn't an issue (you can take your car just to dump luggage), walk up and the apartment has upper and lower entrances, as it's all built on the hillside.
The rooms have been beautifully restored with bright frescoes, inc the ceiling and a historic fireplace cover that was a whole school project to restore. It was nice to find no TV or any modern clutter, so the emphasis is on elegance, and the magic of opening the shutters on waking to gaze out on the beautiful Tuscan countryside all around.
Enter the kitchen and you have all mod cons at your disposal, everything supplied to a very high quality. The bathroom is entered via a trompe l'oeil door in the living room. You can dine in real elegance here, it's not just a 'thrown together' holiday rental. It feels like a historic home. Or if you feel too hot, there is a lovely planted terrace accessed direct from the living room.
From Montecastelli village you can walk directly into the surrounding hills via official tracks, there's a wonderful circular walk taking in Cerbaiola, a once abandoned village, returning by the forest overlooking the Pavone. You rarely meet anyone. But a visit is not complete without walking one of the tracks leading down to or along the Pavone river. Here we saw wild goats, deer and many wild flowers, as well as swimming in the deep pools that remain even in the dry seasons. We swam in October and March, and anything in between will be much warmer. No need for clothes either, you will be completely alone with only nature for company.
As Montecastelli has no shops, you need a car, and the nearest shop is in San Dalmazio (3km) or the excellent Co-Op in Pomerance. San Dalmazio also has 2 great trattorias for eating out. The area is quiet and spectacularly forested, a kind of oasis away from the more touristy towns like Volterra and San Giminiano, but if you want these, they are a short car ride away. Sienna takes a bit longer, about 45 mins.
I can't wait to go back to Montecastelli, I felt very much at home and welcomed there. Nedda is a charming and considerate host who makes sure you have everything you need. Oh I forgot to mention the village water dispenser - brilliant! (natural: free, with gas = 5 cents)

At home amongst the frecoes

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 04 September 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011
This beautifully-decorated house enjoys spectacular views from the front and a cosy, private terrace at the back. The perfect size and layout for two people. On hot summer days this old house and the shady terrace are comfortable and inviting. Among the highlights of this place are the amazing frescoes that cover most of the walls and even the ceiling of the living room. It may sound like living in a museum but in fact it's really fun to be in these artistic surroundings, in this charming medieval village with its narrow climbing streets and surprising twists. Occasional concerts in the summer are held in front of the 13th-century parish church. A car is indispensible, as the nearest shop and bar are in the neighbouring village. A number of exciting hiking routes can be found nearby.
