winter months in arco da caltheta

  • 4 of 5

we would use this property again, but only if there was better heating facilities for the winter months, although the log fire helped and was lovely to sit by on the not so comfey settee and chairs (,they definitely need upgrading). For visitors using this property in the Summer months it is probably as good as you will get. The views are outstanding and the house has all you could wish for..Situated well up in the mountains next to goats, cows and locals.with walks around the nearby villages essential (.providing you are quite fit). Thoroughly recommend for a getaway break.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review, we can supply extra radiators if the weather is to cold for you, this winter has been one of the worst in Madeira for 40 years, and we even had another heavey fall of snow last week (2nd March) over the mountains which could be seen from the sea front in Funchal. We are pleased you enjoyed your holiday, and the walks and the views and hope to see you back in Madeira again when its a little warmer.

Comfortable and quiet house with fantastic view

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Coelha in the end of February and from the first day we could not be more satisfied with our choice. We were met at the Funchal airport by Edgar's lovely wife and she offered to guide us all the way to the house. As we have already been in Arco, we did not want to block her in the evening hours and she explained the exact location and gave us the keys. We had no problems finding the house.

The house is in a truly wonderful location, there is only one small house near by, so there is complete peace and wide open views over the Atlantic Ocean, green forests, gardens and the village of Arco da Calheta. We loved the sunny terrace and our two daughters also liked the green garden with palms and trees at the side and back of the house. Almost every day we had breakfast and dinner outside as the weather was sunny all nine days.

Inside the house there was really everything you could need for a perfect stay. Many clean towels, sheets, blankets, crockery, heaters etc. Our girls were so grateful for many toys and special set of towels for them - how nice of the owners to think about this. There was firewood prepared but unfortunately we could not find matches. I asked the neighbours for the fire and they were very kind and gave me the whole box of matches - it is a small thing but we felt even more homeliness after this.

Everyday we went for a long walk in different parts of Madeira - many levadas (Levadas das 25 fontes, do Risco, do Caldeirao Verde, do Furado, da Ribeira da Janela, da Faja do Rodrigues, do Paul) and Vereda do Areeiro. We visited Santana, Achadas da Cruz, Porto Moniz, Cabo Girao and two times we were also swimming in Calheta (using neoprene suits).

We will certainly recommend the house to our friends and relatives and we would love to repeat our unforgettable holiday at Casa Coelha.

Best wishes to Lucilia and Edgar.

A well kept property.

  • 4 of 5

We arrived on sept.23rd. and stayed til okt.17th.

The house is clean, well equiped. It has everything a person need for cooking.

We have many hours outside on the south side of the house.

Had all our meals out ther, watcing the sunset and the evning lights in the village from there.

Edgar is a verry helpfull person, picked us up at the airport and took us to the house. We did not rent a car, but it was busses near bye.

The local stores had most of what we needed.

We surley recomend this house, even without a car. Ashort walk and you are in Loreto, witch has good piza restaurant.

We walked levada witch is nearby.

5 km. to the beach ,at Calheta village,we walked down and taxi back up to the house.

We had some fantastic days here.

A lovely house in a peaceful, beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the house at the end of April, and having toured around much of the island, we agreed that we had chosen extremely well by renting this property. The views out to the ocean are amazing, and sitting out on the veranda eating breakfast with the Atlantic right in front of you is a wonderful experience.

Inside the house Edgar and his wife have thought of everything, and pretty much anything you need or might need is provided such as towels, utensils, crockery, flip flops etc. Edgar is a lovely friendly gentleman with a great sense of humour, who went out of this way to help us when we needed a lift to and from the airport.

Arco da Calheta is a lovely village, and in the house nestled on the cliff, you are surrounded by greenery. The houses in the village are very well maintained, with gardens full of bright flowers. The area is so nice and peaceful, you can actually hear yourself think, so if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, I can wholeheartedly recommend this property. We liked it so much we even stayed in to eat our evening meal on a few occasions, out on the veranda. There is also a levada nearby if you feel like a walk.

If you do wish to venture out though, there is a great restaurant called Estalagem Engenho Velho in Arco Da Calheta. Calheta Vila is also nearby, and a bus goes to Funchal from Arco also. All in all this holiday was what we needed and the property was perfect for a week of pure relaxation.

2011 Winter Holiday in Arco da Calheta

  • 4 of 5

Must agree with the review of B&S of Worstershire UK that the heating in this villa is not suitable for winter lets. The first few days we where there it was raining & windy, the villa was cold & drafty the log fire although very nice it is not instant & the only 1 little radiator wasn't adequate to heat any of the rooms. The good points, it is a lovely clean & spacious villa with excellent views over the village to the sea. A well equiped kitchen with every thing you need (except no kettle) which we found strange. Overall this lovely villa in a lovely location. We will return again but not in the winter months.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your opinion on that is very pleasent, I will address the kettle as soon as possible, on the climate is not easy for me to explain since It is not usual in our homes or rarely a heating system, because we have a climate mediterraneo that is tropical looking, we have had many changes in our climate but I believe not only in Madeira Island as also in other places True, the house is very cool and breezy, but the summer makes it very pleasent, thought the winter blankets of feathers would warm enough, has also informed that Madeira wine, or red that would help too .. ah ahah.(near the fireplace) Thank you very much

Founded in 1572, the parish of Arco da Calheta is set between the mountains and got its name from the surrounding hills and its proximity to the parish of Calheta. After the discovery of the island this parish was one of the first to be submitted to huge agricultural explorations, giving origin to extensive lands with noble houses, chapels and cultivated areas.

The busiest time of the year is the 7th and the 8th of September when the parish celebrates its annual procession and a fair to honour the patron saint São Braz

The Beach Area of Calheta is a short drive down through the rolling countryside, and boasts golden sandy beaches, and a lovely Marina with cafes and restaurants.

Funchal is a 25 minute drive to the East of Calheta and is Madeira Capital. Funchal is located in an absolutely unique area. The amphitheatre of Funchal city begins at the harbour and rises almost 1200 m high on gentle slopes. This provides a natural shelter and was what once attracted the first settlers
