About Liz Ford

Our plan to move abroad was first mooted during a family discussion while celebrating the advent of the new millennium. At first we considered staying close to home and researched properties in northern France. We soon travelled further south however, in search of that precious combination of space and sun. Once we started to look in Italy, our mind was made up. Italians are surely the happiest people on the planet and we were welcomed like family, everyone being eager to share tips and experiences as we started to find our feet. We now feel perfectly at home here among our small, supportive community of Italian friends and neighbours.

Liz Ford purchased this villa in 2005

Why Liz Ford chose Ostuni

Our villa is on a hilltop overlooking Ostuni and the the Valle D'Itria. The property had been lived in until the 1960s and was in need of major renovation. Fortunately, the nephew of the owners was now an architect and he shared our vision of an authentic renovation but using modern materials. The old trullo for example was used as a 'palmento' - a room where grapes were pressed and the juices stored for wine-making. All of this was lovingly preserved and is now a popular feature of the house. We were keen to preserve the old traditions too and now include almond and olive harvesting among our autumn routines. This local produce is on display in the villa and makes the ideal gift for friends. We may not be able to identify precisely the exact trees of origin, but we can certainly guarantee that everything is home produced.

What makes this villa unique

Being on a hilltop, we do not suffer the sometimes oppressive heat of the Summer months and instead enjoy a unique micro-climate where warm Spring and Autumn weather combines with the hot Summer to give a long season for holiday visitors. The villa is secluded and tranquil (we offer yoga holidays too !), yet is near enough to local facilities so as not to be isolated. The nearby village of Casalini for example, boasts 3 small mini-markets, a bar, a post office, a petrol station and most importantly, 3 superb restaurants, each of them offering a different dining experience. Most guests will spend the first few days of their holiday relaxing by the pool before venturing out into the great wide world of Puglia. We provide advice and suggestions and regularly book restaurants and guided tours for our guests, all at no extra cost as we are keen to make your stay as enjoyable as possible without of course being over-intrusive. Because we value your privacy, we do not live on site during your stay, so that you can enjoy the full, peaceful holiday experience with your friends and family. We are of course only 15 minutes away should you need us and you can call us on the house mobile phone provided. We look forward to welcoming you to Puglia.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We really enjoyed staying in your country villa. Everything was very clean, comfortable and well stocked. Every time we went out for the day, we couldn't wait to get back to the villa to sit outside with some wine and watch James jump in and out of pool. Lovely, relaxing place. It was especially nice to have some food there to hold us over until we were able to find the supermarket!

Thanks again for making our stay so enjoyable. We will definitely recommend your villa to friends.

Wonderful relaxing holiday

  • 5 out of 5
The reviews already posted played a big part in us renting this villa and we have to say they were absolutely spot on and we felt compelled to confirm their accuracy.
What an utterly beautiful place to stay. The villa is so well kitted out, they really have thought of everything that you might need, the huge shaded terrace is perfect for sitting out and admiring the wonderful views without being directly in the sun (it was 35 degrees most days although the gentle breeze on the hillside made it comfortable) as was the pretty arbour by the pool, the olive and almond trees in the grounds make a lovely huge garden to wander around and the pool is just magnificent! The villa was very comfortable inside but we spent all our time outside as it was so warm and pretty.
We bombarded Liz with questions by email before we booked and she always replied virtually by return and never made us feel we were being a nuisance. When we finally met them they were so helpful and informative, it really made a big difference, much better than a key left in a secure location which we have had at other places. The welcome pack was brilliant as we arrived at around 9pm - ham, pasta, pasata, garlic and onion to make a quick meal when we got there, along with wine, beer, juice, and even fresh herbs from the garden! Also bread, jam and butter for breakfast. The restaurants in the village were superb and we went to two of them twice and the third once. Huge portions of excellent food and such good value! La Locanda is rather special but be warned - anti pasti for one is enough for 4!! Trip Advisor goes into more detail about the three restaurants and they all have excellent reviews - amazing for such a small village. The supermarkets recommended by Liz were also excellent value, particularly the one in Ostuni which had a fantastic fresh fish and meat counter if you want to self cater. The local supermarkets in the village were also great for essentials. Further afield, the coast line is beautiful, lovely private coves and the nearby towns are stunning.
We cannot recommend this villa highly enough, the quality of the building and grounds and wonderful pool, the helpfulness of the owners and the location for sightseeing or relaxing on the beach. As one of the previous guests said, our only disappointment is that we weren't there longer. Thank you both for a wonderful holiday.

Beautiful villa in stunning surroundings

  • 5 out of 5
Our intention for this holiday was to relax and unwind and the Villa Otto Sentieri provided just what we needed, from our arrival in Bari to the day we left. The directions provided from Bari to the villa were clear and we had no trouble finding it. On arrival the owners greeted us like friends, giving us a full tour of the property. The welcome pack provided was very much appreciated and would be more than enough for anyone arriving too late to shop. The villa was immaculate and welcomingly cool after the hot drive.

The pool is clean and well kept and provided the perfect end to a day's exploring of this beautiful part of the world for which the villa is perfectly situated.

The supermarket in Ostuni, a short drive away, has everything you could need if eating in and the large terrace with barbecue is an ideal place to spend the evening (although, not surprisingly, we did need insect repellent which is to be expected and in no way detracted from the holiday). Having said that, the windows all have insect screens and the beds are provided with nets.

If choosing to dine out, we can vouch for the quality and value for money of all three restaurants in the nearby village of Casalini. We would recommend a visit to all of them with a special mention for Locanda.

We would have no hesitation in recommending Villa Otto Sentieri to anyone intending to visit Puglia, whether the intention is to explore the area or just to relax in quiet and peaceful surroundings. Our only disappointment was that we had just a week to enjoy it and would happily return.

Owner's Response: We are really pleased you enjoyed your stay in our little part of Puglia. La Locanda in Casalini is one of our favourite restaurants too and they will be delighted when we share your comments with them. We do look forward to meeting you both again sometime soon.

Sheer bliss

  • 5 out of 5
My family of four, which includes two teen-age boys, had a great stay at Otto Sentieri. It was very private and secluded which was exactly what we were looking for. Liz and Bas were only a phone call away if we needed anything. The villa was well kitted out and very spacious and clean. There was always a cool evening breeze so the air con was not necessary for sleeping. The boys enjoyed their 'trulli' bedroom.
There were plenty of brochures in the villa for your perusal and Liz and Bas were a wealth of knowledge regarding the area. We went to the market in Martina Franca one morning and it was massive. They had everything from kitchen ware to clothing to fruits and vegetables for sale. A trip to Alberobello is a must even if it is very touristic. The many trullis make great photos as well. We visited two beaches, Torre Canne and Costa Merlata. Both were clean and good for a family outing. The town of Casalini was quaint and we enjoyed two dinners there. One at La Locanda and the other at Il Quadrifoglio. Both had fantastic antipasto -- lots of it and very tasty.
We enjoyed a cookery class at the villa which I had arranged with Liz and Bas. Chef Rocco made some tasty dishes and I hope that I can duplicate them at home. I've already made the little meatballs and they were a hit! Now I can only hope the tiramisu turns out just as good as Roccos'. Thanks again Rocco for a very entertaining evening.
All in all we had a very relaxing time and I can't thank Liz and Bas enough for being such gracious hosts and sharing with us their little piece of paradise.
Cheers,
Rhonda, Peter and family from Canada

Otto Sentieri

This property is in an idyllic location on top of a hill with lots of space around so you feel very private.
In the local area is Cisternino and Casalini which had lots of great restaurants, and supermarkets if you want to self cater as we did a couple of nights.
The welcome pack of provisions was much appreciated and got us under way without having to go shopping on our first day!
We had a great time here, the weather was wonderful for the end of October(23deg C), the property is kitted out with everything we needed, and was immaculately clean and comfortable (including the bed)!
Liz and Bas were both very welcoming and spent time helping with ideas for our trips out!

A relaxing week in the sunshine

  • 5 out of 5
I first visited Parco Otto Sentieri for a week in October 2009 and really enjoyed the warm Autumn sun. This time, I needed a Summer holiday and was delighted to re-visit some favourite beaches and restaurants in the middle of the holiday season. It was great to see the local squares filled with music and small restaurants, most of which I discovered were family run. Many improvements have taken place around the Park, particularly in the increase of shady seating areas dotted around, each with a different view over the hills and the large pool of course provided welcome relief from the heat. The owners do not live on site, which for us was a major advantage as we could enjoy the privacy and tranquillity without feeling awkward. The help and advice the owners provided was fantastic, whether it was booking restaurant tables (Bas speaks fluent Italian) or showing us where to park in town during the busy weekend. We also enjoyed a couple of impromptu yoga lessons with Liz, a qualified teacher. We had an unforgettable 2 weeks and we are already planning our next visit to Puglia. Parco Otto Sentieri has everything you could wish for if you want to relax in peace and experience wonderful food and local culture.

We are ideally situated in the cool hills between the beaches of the Adriatic and the historic sites of the Itria Valley, including the UNESCO World heritage site of Alberobello. The area is renowned for its local wines from Locorotondo as well as its gastronomic restaurants, many of them family run. Long sandy beaches in Torre Canne and Torre Guaceto are punctuated by secluded rocky inlets and isolated coves, where beach side restaurants and bars offer delicious seafood snacks. The early evening passeggiata typifies the social and cultural spectacle on view throughout the region. There are many open air theatres in historic town squares. Parco Otto Sentieri is ideally situated to profit from the sun, the sea, the rolling hils, and the markets and restaurants offering fresh local produce. It is a short drive from the airports of Brindisi and Bari and also the hypermarkets in Messagne and Fasano. Daily shopping is done in our local village which also boasts 3 excellent places to eat.
