Ticks all the right boxes for Greek Island lovers
We stayed in Elounda at Villa Bouganvilliea the last week in October having been impressed by it's pictures and descriptions in the brochure. We weren't sure what to expect weather-wise from Crete at this time of year but the sun shone brightly throughout our stay and temperatures averaged mid-seventies every day and it was mild enough not to wear a coat in the evening... so perfect really.
First impressions on arriving at the Villa Bouganvilliea was how modern, airy and immaculately clean it was but the real jaw dropper was the view from the balconies and sun terrace which offer a spectacular panoramic view of the bay (dawn is absolutely stunning!). Facilities at the villa are all modern and in good working order and it's located up a gentle hill that's a pleasant stroll from the local village, Elounda. We immediately fell in love with Elounda due to it's traditional Grecian feel, good range of bars and restaurants and blue flag beach. The locals are also a friendly bunch and typical of true Grecian hospitality we were offered the usual delightful extras with drinks and meals (extra dishes and liquors) but what really touched our hearts was how they welcomed us into their village get together for yet more food and drink as we were there for closing night for their season.
The food was excellent everywhere that we ate and would definitely recommend family-run Despina for good quality traditional food. It's clear that the owner, Antonis, takes great pride in his dishes. We found a nice local in Bar Eden for pre-dinner drinks and banter with the staff there and one evening took a short taxi ride to Plaka, a nearby fishing village where the waiters told us all the gossip and shared photos of celebrities who had also recently visited (Rhiana and Lady Gaga no less!).
It wouldn't be a complete review without mentioning the nearby island, that was an old leprosy colony, Spinnanlonga; made famous in Victoria Hislop's book 'The Island'. We hired a boat for the afternoon and took a tour around the island and to some secluded beaches and bays for some deep sea swimming and we even got a very unexpected discount which was a real bonus at the end of an amazing afternoon, thank you Captain Yannis!
Anyway, I think the above sufficiently captures our fantastic stay at Bouganvilliea and needless to say we'll be returning next year...and probably the year after that. We're massive fans of the Greek islands for their beauty, food and convivial hosts
