Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Villa Anna, everything was just as described and every bit as good as the reviews of previous renters have said.

You do seem to have thought of everything and we had a great time, so thanks again.

VILLA ANNA

  • 5 out of 5
We have just got back home from Crete having had the most wonderful forthnight staying at Villa Anna in Aspro.
From the first moment when we arrived in the middle of the night after a long flight and drive from Heraklion we felt at home and really appreciated the supplies that had been put in the fridge which meant we could have breakfast without having to rush out and buy everything immediately.
Both Wendy and I really enjoyed the location with the view from the porch at the front of the house especially at sunset being a real plus. Villa Anna felt much more of a loved and cared for home than just another holiday house.
We made good use of the pool although the habit of going to swim in the harbour at Almyryda we have built up over 10 years was hard to break - we enjoy meeting old acquaintances down there - it's not just about the swimming.
The facilities and equipment in the Villa were excellent and really exceeded our expectation - plenty of space downstairs and comfortable beds - the a.c. was only needed for short bursts before bedtime - the weather was never overly hot this year. The dishwasher was a real boon too and having the washing machine meant that we came home with clean clothes and not a pile of dirty stuff.

I noticed that you had a couple of meditarranean gardening books in the lounge - as keen gardeners we were very impressed by your planting scheme around the villa - it would win our prize for the best garden on the site by a country mile! It is amazing how quickly things grow and mature in the warmth and sunshine.
We also made use of Frankie Miles' driving tour guide to make a trip to a restaurant high in the mountains above Chania - the Psichro Pigadi taverna was about 1000 m above sea level with an amazing view over the area. Quite a long drive with all the hairpin bends but worth the trip.
As this was the first time I have booked accommmodation independently of an agency I was delighted that we found your property. I did spend a lot of time researching the various alternatives on offer on several websites. Obviously it helped us in our search that we knew the area quite well but one of thefactors that made me choose Villa Anna were the really positive reviews you had had from previous guests.

Owner's Response: Thanks you John and Wendy for your lovely review on Villa Anna. Everybody who stays feels it is a home away from home and treat it as such. I'm always singing the praises of the visitors for the care they take of it.
I'm glad you enjoyed the views and the garden. It is amazing how quickly plants grow and over time I hope the bougainvilleas will spread down the bank to the trees and create a wall of vivid pink. That and the scent of jasmine makes evenings on the patio heaven. I hope you will come back again. Mary

VILLA ANNA 2012

  • 5 out of 5
We have spent our last 6 summer holidays in Almirida staying close to the beach and have loved it there so we were interested and excited to be staying a little way back from the sea in Aspro. We needed a car of course but the drive is only 5 minutes and then you find yourself in a wonderful, peaceful location with olive groves and fantastic views. Having the car the whole time also meant we could really explore the area and go to different beaches and tavernas, which we loved.

Villa Anna is a real treat, it just feels loved and cared for and is well stocked with everything you need, including a dishwasher!! Derick and Pam looked after us with linen changes and they were helpful and friendly. The other people on site were really friendly too and we even had a communal bbq one evening which was fun, however because of the way the villas are arranged the front of Villa Anna is completely private and you can sit on the patio or terrace and not know anyone else is there. My favourite time of day was first thing in the morning sitting on the patio gazing at the views with a cup of tea and having the smell of jasmine wafting over. Oh and my other favourite time of day was sitting on the terrace watching the spectacular sunsets with a glass or two of rose, it really was heaven.

I can't recommend Villa Anna enough. The communication with Mary the owner was fantastic and from start to finish everything went smoothly. Can't wait to go back!!

VILLA ANNA JULY 2012

  • 5 out of 5
Just returned from 12 days at Villa Anna, and what can we say that hasn't already been said?
Villa Anna is in a beautiful location set in a small development of 8 similar villas sharing two pools, but to be honest, most of the time we didn't know there was anyone else there, and had the pool to ourselves. The location was just what we wanted, just 5 minutes (by car) out of a small town with all the facilities required, so far enough away for peace and quiet, but close enough for the convenience of tavernas and shops within a stone's throw.
The layout of the villa and patio is such that even though there are other villas and people around, you can enjoy the privacy of your own patio with both shaded and sunny areas enjoying views across Souda bay.
The villa is perfectly maintained, and is equipped more like a home than a holiday letting. The service provided by Derick and Pam including cleaning and fresh linen twice a week is first class, and the fact that all towels including beach/pool towels were provided made a real difference when faced with Ryanairs luggage charges!
There's a great selection of bars and restaurants in Almyrida and Kalives all with reasonable prices, especially when compared to Spain where we've holidayed over the past few years, but we found that tavernas tended to be better value the further inland and uphill you travel, Vamos being a good example. Also if you're planning on using the BBQ, make sure you visit John the English butcher in Vamos in the morning for the best selection of meats in the area.
All in all a fantastic holiday, in a beautiful villa in a perfect location.
Thanks Mary, we hope to be back!

Owner's Response: Hello Stuart, Thanks for the great review and useful suggestions on eating out and recommending the English butcher in Vamos for BBQ - his meat is always of the highest quality. I hope you will holiday again in Villa Anna - I have been lucky to have quite a bit of repeat business which I think is the best recommendation of all. Until the next time. Thanks again. Mary

VILLA ANNA

  • 5 out of 5
We had a lovely holiday at Villa Anna. We have 2 children 4 and 7 and the villa and pool was perfect for them. Villa Anna is situated on a hill top so you have beautiful views, and is a really well thought out villa, with EVERYTHING you need...and more! The villa was spotlessly clean and Pam and Derrick provided a mid week towel change which was great. The kitchen was well stocked and cleaning equipment supplied including toiletries and washing up liquid and powder all very welcome and the sort of thing you don't want to have to buy at the beginning of a holiday!
We were the only ones in the small group of the villas so had the pool to ourselves whcih was great.
Almirida is a very charming little village with a lovely beach and shallow waters -great for kids. All the surrounding area in that part of Crete is also very pretty.
We had a great holiday and Mary was extremely organised throughtout the booking process and gave us all the details we required to have a really wonderful time. We will definately visit again and highly reccommend it to families with or without children - it's perfect!

Owner's Response: Thanks Anna for your lovely review of Villa Anna and the area. I have tried to think of EVERYTHING simply by thinking about what I would like myself. Guests always appreciate the little things - dishwasher and washing tablets etc. and plenty of clothes hangers! Derick and Pam are always praised for the way they keep the villa and the location / area sells itself. You will be more than welcome another year. Mary

THE WONDERFUL VILLA ANNA

  • 5 out of 5
We really enjoyed our stay at Villa Anna.
Our first impressions were enhanced by the wonderful scent of pine and jasmine that greeted us upon arrival.
The villa is spotlessly clean, well maintained and well stocked with everything one needs.
Derrick and Pam (who look after the villa) are extremely helpful and friendly. The change of bed linen and towels twice weekly is most welcome.
Swimming pool is clean, well maintained and barely used.
The villa itself is perfectly positioned with a sizeable area around the side that offers privacy, superb views across Souda Bay and sunshine all day and well in to the evening.
Almirida is only 3 mins drive away (though just too far to comfortably walk) and has everything you need with plenty of tavernas and shops. We found the quality of Taverna better if you headed inland towards Vamos, in particular Gavalochori.
The Welcome book was very helpful with lots of information on the surrounding area. Fun family days out included a boat trip in Almirida, shopping in Chania and the Limnoupolis water park. If you are staying in this villa you will need a car. I would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

Owner's Response: Thanks Lewis and Ellen for your review. The cleanliness of Villa Anna and its position always gets glowing reviews. The extra changes of bed linen and towels are always welcome by visitors especially in the very hot weather. Thanks too for the advice on local tavernas - with so many old villages nearby there is always a good choice of places to eat. Most of them grow their own so the food is always fresh and wholesome. I'm delighted you enjoyed the holidays. Mary

RELAXING VILLA IN BEAUTIFUL CRETE SETTING

  • 5 out of 5
Villa Anna in Aspro is certainly the ideal place to enjoy this part of Crete. Its hill-top setting offers stunning views across Souda Bay and down to the little Cretan seaside resort of Almyrida. Inside the villa, which was immaculately clean and beautifully laid out, no stone was left unturned when it came to facilities; from a picnic bag ideal for days out, an iron and ironing board to press out suitcase creases, and a high-powered hair dryer (great not to have to pack my own) to mosquito plug ins, travel adaptors, shampoo and shower gel, and, best of all, fluffy bath and beach towels which were replaced midweek. All perfect for a stress-free holiday. Our two children (5 and 3) enjoyed the pool daily. My only concern was that it wasn't completely fenced in so we had to be vigilant but it didn't stop our enjoyment of it. Shame the builders didn't think to put a little gate at the top of the steps. Also, it was a little deep for the children but we just kept them in armbands the whole time. As for the location and local area, it was perfect: just a short drive down the (steep) hill to Almyrida for its lovely beaches - we preferred the one to the west of the village which was quieter - and some great tavernas. Our favourite was opposite the French cafe (sorry, can't remember it's name, Samos?). It did lovely fresh fish which we selected by visiting the kitchen. The Greek salads, Gigante Beans and tender lamb dishes went down well with the children in pretty much every taverna we visited. All washed down (by us) by some good local wine. The other benefit of Villa Anna's location was its promity to the lovely mountain villages of Gavalahori (we ate in the taverna in the main square twice) and Vamos (I Sterna Tou Bloumosifi was a great taverna and very interesting in a power cut!). Both villages well worth a visit day or night, as is the hillside village of Plaka. We hired a car through AutoClub (they were cheaper than Flisvos by 20 Euros) which meant we could enjoy more of the island. Rethimnon was a nice afternoon out but Chania won hands down for its charm and beauty. Definately worth a trip to its restaurants and backstreets for some great bargains. One more day trip that was well worth it was the 1hr ferry from Kissamou (1hr drive from Aspro) to Gramvousa Island with its Venetian hill-top castle and the paradise of Balos Bay with its stunning blue lagoon. A wonderful day out and an amazing holiday! We have already recommended Villa Anna!

Owner's Response: Hello Louise,
I‘m delighted you were very happy with the facilities in Villa Anna. Everyone comments on the cleanliness, the views and the little extras that make a holiday special. I try to supply things that will reduce luggage / flying costs and make Villa Anna a home away from home. Thanks for your views on places to see and dine. The taverna you loved in Almyrida is Psaros (fisherman) hence the lovely fresh fish! I will act on your concern about the pool not being fully enclosed by updating the info on this website to highlight that. I'm glad it didn't stop your enjoyment of the pool. Thanks for taking the time to do such a comphrensive review. I'm sure others will find it very informative. Thanks too for recommending Villa Anna to your friends and family. They, like you, will be more than welcome. Mary

Car: recommended

Villa Anna is in beautiful Apokoronas. White Mountains (2453m), snow capped until late spring, provide a dramatic backdrop to its traditional inland villages of Vamos, Gavalochori, Douliana, Plaka and Kokkino Chorio. The area has retained its character and visitors are drawn to the natural beauty, the people and their way of life. Many have become so enchanted with Apokoronas that they have bought homes, which has boosted the tourist facilities in the area.

The seaside resorts of Almyrida (or Almirida) and Kalives are located in Souda Bay. Almyrida once a small fishing village still retains its charm. It is now a thriving seaside resort with traditional tavernas lining its shallow blue flag beach which is ideal for children. Windsurfing and sailing, walking and bike hire are available for active holidays and beach lounger for sun lovers. Mini markets, vegetable shop, baker, patisserie, wine shop and news agency provide all the basics.

Chania, 'most beautiful city on Crete' and Rethymnon are only 30+ minutes away. The famous Minoan site at Knossos is also easily reached by car. The local site of Aptera is a must as its sensitive excavation has retained its authenticity.
