Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday chalet in Samoens - CHALET CHOCOLAT
MULTI AWARD WINNING CHALET SLEEPS UP TO 12

AWARD WINNING CHALET CHOCOLAT sits within its own landscaped alpine garden above the pretty village of Verchaix, near Samoens. From its sunny terraces and balconies Chalet Chocolat enjoys sensational views over the picturesque Samoens valley to the mountains of the Grand Massif and Mont Blanc range beyond. The chocolate box exterior belies its smart, contemporary interior. Snugly wrapped in gorgeous, warm timber in harmony with local tradition, its interior is simple yet sophisticated.

Because we want you to fall in love with Chalet Chocolat and come back again, and again; we’ve added all the luxuries we could dream up, to spoil you rotten. We don’t want you to feel like it’s ‘home from home’.  No, we want you to feel indulged, pampered and special

So we designed and built Chalet Chocolat with you in mind. We paid lots of attention to detail, so it would be the best value for your hard-earned cash in the Alps. We’ve gone upscale, more Roche Bobois than Ikea and paid attention to the stuff you can’t see, like 3 x more insulation in the roof and walls. So it makes you feel warmer or cooler depending on the season. It saves heaps on our carbon footprint too.

Now we realise location is everything, which is why we put Chalet Chocolat exactly where it is. We chose the sunniest spot in the valley, with knock-out views from every room, terrace and balcony. It’s only a short stroll to the local bar, restaurants and ski-bus and an hours’ drive to the airport. The age-old axiom still holds, that a property’s location is everything… period.

Chalet Chocolat provides sumptuous luxury at a reasonable price for discerning guests. Chalet Chocolat is a LOW ALLERGEN ENVIRONMENT.

WINTER WONDERLAND

The Grand Massif Ski Area offers a wide variety of terrain, appealing to every ability level; with Mont Blanc ( Western Europe’s highest mountain) as a frequent backdrop, it’s also one of the most beautiful.

The Grand Massif Ski Area boasts an excellent snow record due to its proximity to Mont Blanc and its unique microclimate, as well as 100?s of snow cannons, a recent investment guaranteeing snow-covered pistes on the lower slopes all season.

Massive investment on high-speed infrastructure in the last few years, means that almost all of the 80 lifts across the resort are the most comfortable and fastest of their kind in Europe today, leaving loads more time to ski!

The Grand Massif Ski Area offers the lowest ratio of accommodation capacity to number of ski lifts anywhere, which is why they can boast the lowest queues of any resort in Europe!

The Grand Massif Ski Area has 14 black runs, 51 red, 54 blue and 15 green runs. The Grand Massif also has the longest blue run in Europe the ‘Cascade‘, which meanders down for 14 km’s from the top of the Flaine bowl, through high mountain scenery to the alpine village of Sixt Fer a Cheval.

There is a huge choice of winter activities available for family members who don't wish to ski. Ice-skating, dog sledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, speed-riding and free entertainment provided by the local tourist office. More details can be found on http://www.purealpine.com

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

Once the snow has melted away, the mountains spring into life and as the villages of Verchaix, Samoens, Morillon and Sixt are all -season resorts, this area has an enormous amount to offer!

Lac Bleu with its beach, fantastic swimming, volley ball, tennis courts, horse riding and adventure park is within a 10 minute walk from Chalet Chocolat! Free daily activities for the family daily/eves put on for your enjoyment

Within a 5 minute (by car) radius of the chalet there is: A swimming pool complex with three pools and 60 metre slide. Rafting, paragliding, climbing and via ferrata, mountain biking with lifts and 600km's of trails. Hiking in the Cirque du Fer a Cheval with thirty 700 m waterfalls and wildlife galore!

About Rebecca Watkins

We are a family of five. My husband John and I are parents to three beautiful teenage daughters. My husband designs and builds unique high quality homes in the UK and has for the last 20 years concentrated on creating the most environmentally friendly homes possible, even when this was not as fashionable as it is today. His success is attributed to his attention to detail and Chalet Chocolat is no exception. Some of you may know him from the Grand Designs C4 TV show where he appears in the Green Dragon Barn creation in Devon (Series 2). We lived in the Samoens area for 6 years while creating Chalet Chocolat. It was an extremely happy period in our lives and we felt as if we were on a constant holiday! Two of our daughters became successful ski racers and one even raced for Great Britain!

Rebecca Watkins purchased this chalet in 2006
Why Rebecca Watkins chose Samoens

John had been an avid mountaineer and climber in his early twenties and this was initially what drew us to the mountains. We chose the Grand Massif area as we felt that not only was this ski region one of the most snow-sure in Europe, but also because within a very small radius there is so much to do and see all year round. We have travelled extensively around the world, but this valley really offers something very special that we have not found elsewhere. Its beauty is second to none, it feels remote although transport to the area is easy and Geneva only 1 hour away. We have one of the six classified areas of France on our doorstep, the beauty of which takes your breath away. The list of activities in the area is virtually endless and Geneva, Annecy, Chamonix and Italy are less than an hour away!

What makes this chalet unique

As John was fully responsible for the build of Chalet Chocolat, we were able to ensure that it was done to the very highest standard. We were also able to put the money spared by the self build in to the quality of the furnishings and equipment which more truly reflect that of a very top end chalet. Chalet Chocolat is very popular indeed with many repeat bookings, we know this is as a result of our commitment to quality. The area offers 265 km's of piste to ski with some of the best runs in Europe including the 14km Cascade Piste that takes you through some of the finest scenery seen anywhere with Mont Blanc as a back drop. The summer period offers endless activities: lake and beach, outdoor swimming pools, adventure park, mountain biking, paragliding, horses, 600 kms of hiking trails...

Perfect

Review Submitted: 02 April 2012 Date of Stay: March 2012
We really enjoyed our time at Chalet Chocolat. It's a beautifully constructed chalet perched on the side of the mountain with great views and a very short walk from a tiny rustic French village. It's very spacious, modern, executed to a very high standard and fully equipped. Only downside is that it's a drive (or bus ride) to the nearest lift at Morillon (it's on the other side of the valley with views of the slopes at Morillon and Samoen), but a short one and well worth the compromise - you'll struggle to find anything like this on the slopes at these prices. Debbie, from De La Terre catering is a must - food and the service is exceptional and she is a really nice person to have around. Big thumbs up, we'll definitely stay at Chalet Chocolat again if we decide to come back to the Grand Massif.
Owner's Response: We are delighted that our guests enjoy their stay at Chalet Chocolat! Debbie, who provides the flexible catering option does a wonderful job as you say, with great food delivered to the chalet for very reasonable prices. It certainly makes both my husband and I very happy to know that all our hard work has paid off and our guests leave at the end of their holiday happy and satisfied- you really couldn't ask for more-Thank you!

Chalet Chocolat

Review Submitted: 02 January 2012 Date of Stay: December 2011
Chalet Chocolat is a wonderful chalet really well equipped and furnished. We had a wonderful week there with our family including a one year old and a two year old. The situation of the chalet in Verchaix is perfect for access even during heavy snow as is both the nearby towns of Morillon and Samoen. We would certainly recommend it to friends and family. The only one small critisicm we would have is that extra lighting down to the basement above the stairs would be an advantage.
Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your wonderful review, we always really appreciate it when people take the time to review their stay at Chalet Chocolat, thank you!
The lighting issue over the basement stairs will addressed next week as the led's aren't quite strong enough, we agree! Thanks once again!

Wonderful Alpine Chalet Chocolat

What a find, this fantastic chalet is in a prime position on a south facing slope overlooking the Giffre Valley . Ideal for both winter and summer holidays. Coming home from skiing the Chalet Chocolat was bliss with the outside hot tub to jump in, well stocked kitchen, beautiful lounge(the sofas are fab), lovely bedrooms and showers. The views from the chalet are out of this world and it was great to sit on the balcony or in the hot tub with a G&T taking in the superb scenery. The Ski bus was approx 100 metres down the road with easy access to both the Morillon and Samoeons Ski Lifts and the Grand Massif ski area. Great variety of skiing with uncrowded slopes and no lift queues. Samoens village is beautiful and well worth a visit with a wide variety of shops where we could purchase our groceries. Having our own ski equipment we found rental lockers near the Samoens ski lift. There is a great 'boulangerie' nearby.
We are a ski club with many years holidaying in the alpes. This is by far the best accommodation we have found. There are stunning walks from the chalet down through forests and gorges to the villages in the valley. All 9 of us enjoyed finding our way down to Samoens on our last day.
Many thanks to Rebecca and John for all their help and advise, nothing was too much trouble for them. We loved their chalet and hope to return in the near future.

Owner's Response: Wow! Thank you for writing a review with so much sensible detail. We are very happy indeed that you had such a great time at Chalet Chocolat and the Grand Massif ski area. As a ski club, we really value what you have to say as you are so familiar with the types of accommodation available to most people at this price range. It feels good that we are considered the best, we hope that we remain so and vow never to become complacent! Thank you very much once again!

Chalet Chocolat

This a beautiful and stunning chalet well located for the Grand Massif skiing areas. Really good size with excellent facilities within the Chalet and from what I had seen in the area this looked like one of the best.
(one of our group said "this is the most luxurious Chalet I have stayed in" and he's a regular skiier) There are restaurants very closeby which serve very good food.

Very clean and welcoming and the beds and bed linen were absolute heaven, great to fall into after a hard day on the piste. We were a group of adults with a 2 year old, she loved it and it was very safe for her with stair gates and a cot provided.

I would absolutely recommend using the local catering service from Debbie at De La Terre - this was a godsend for us girls who always end up doing all the cooking.

The owners were very good at communicating with us, as we were quite a hard bunch to accommodate, lots of queries and questions which they answered immediately.

We did however have problems, nothing to do with the chalet, but with the area... there is nowhere and I mean not even a bank to change money and you really need to know this before you go. Note that even the banks in the next village would not change English money into Euros (nearest place Geneva). Also if you are skiing in the immediate area and are a good skier you are fine, but if you are a beginner and need to rely on a bus to get you to Flaine or Les Caroz ( the best area for beginners) there isn't one and it will cost you EUR150 each way!!!.

My advice would be to make sure you hire a car and change your money before you get there. It is worth it , the scenery is stunning and we had a great time. Also if you have infants make sure you book them into the nursery as soon as you can as places are really limited and they were full when we tried.

I would definitely recommend Chalet Chocolat, and we would book again.

Very good indeed.

Owner's Response: I am very pleased that our guests enjoyed Chalet Chocolat so much and am always very appreciative when people take the time to write a review. Thank you.
Regarding the issue about money changing, this is important to know: most banks in most small towns in France will not happily change money and provide ATM's to withdraw your currency instead.
NOTE; There is an ATM ( cashpoint) close to the lift at Morillon and it is very handy for euro cash withdrawals.
Regarding the beginners slopes: Morillon has some great long beginners slopes running right down the mountain. Les Carroz is easily accessed by blue slopes from Morillon or Samoens as is Flaine. In fact it is possible to experience the whole resort on blue slopes alone. The best green slope ( easiest) in the Grand Massif is The Marvel Run in Morillon, which is 5 km's in length. In the other stations the slopes are mostly blues and reds, so if you are a real beginner ie: second day, then best to stick to Morillon which is only 2 mins on the ski bus from the chalet.

What a fabulous holiday home! John and Rebecca have added so many lovely little touches that make a world of difference. Fantastic location, it couldn't be easier to get to the ski bus if you don't feel like driving to the slopes and the view is wonderful. There are a few lovely restaurants just down the road and a few other towns close by that are worth checking out.

We especially enjoyed watching the log fire from the comfort of the huge sofa and the adorable Christmas tree they had left for us.

The property was very clean and modern, rooms were all lovely and the beds very comfortable. The only issue we had was with the hot tub as the screen was damaged and it was a little cold, but Rebecca responded very quickly to my enquiry so we were able to resolve the issue and as I understand this has now been fixed.

We would definitely recommend and would love to stay again.

Our guests are always welcome back! Both in summer or winter, Chalet Chocolat and it's location is just paradise and everything ons could wish for in a holiday!
The Arctic Spa touch screen had let water in and as a result the temperature of the tub and other things were affected. This matter was very quickly resolved by Arctic Spa Hot Tubs at our request.
