Overview

Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday chalet in Samoens - CHALET CHOCOLAT

Award-winning boutique ski chalet providing bespoke accommodation for 12

Chalet Chocolat sits within its own landscaped alpine garden above the pretty village of Verchaix, near Samoens. From its sunny terraces and balconies, Chalet Chocolat enjoys sensational views over the picturesque Samoens valley to the mountains of the Grand Massif and Mont Blanc range beyond. The chocolate box exterior belies its smart, contemporary interior. Snugly wrapped in gorgeous, warm timber in harmony with local tradition, its interior is simple yet sophisticated. www.purealpine.com

Chalet Chocolat welcomes guests year round and is uniquely furnished with loving care and meticulous attention to detail. Alongside beautiful antiques and custom-made furniture, the chalet is fully equipped for vision and sound and comes with spa pool facilities to soothe weary muscles after a day on the mountain.

It’s all in the detail: there is nothing more important following a day of exertion, than real luxury. We ensure the bedding is divinely comfortable, that our linen and towels are of the very best Egyptian cotton and our buffalo leather sofas are ready to sink into.

Now we realise that location is everything, which is why we placed Chalet Chocolat exactly where it is. We chose the sunniest spot in the valley with sensational views from every room, terrace and balcony. It’s a short stroll to the local bar, restaurants and ski-bus and only an hours’ drive from the airport.

Whether it’s to mark a special occasion, an activity holiday or simply to spend some quality time with your family, every stay is special at Chalet Chocolat.

WINTER ACTIVITIES

The Grand Massif Ski Area offers a wide variety of terrain, appealing to every ability level; with Mont Blanc ( Western Europe’s highest mountain) as a frequent backdrop, it’s also one of the most beautiful.

The Grand Massif Ski Area boasts an excellent snow record due to its proximity to Mont Blanc and its unique microclimate, as well as 100's of snow cannons, a recent investment guaranteeing snow-covered pistes on the lower slopes all season.

Massive investment in their high-speed infrastructure over the last few years, means that almost all of the 80 lifts across the resort are the most comfortable and fastest of their kind in Europe today, leaving loads more time to ski!

The Grand Massif Ski Area offers the lowest ratio of accommodation capacity to number of ski lifts anywhere, which is why they can boast the lowest queues of any resort in Europe!

There is a comprehensive selection of winter activities available to non-skiers. More details can be found on our comprehensive English speaking site: http://www.purealpine.com

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

Once the snow has melted away, the mountains spring into life and as the villages of Verchaix, Samoens, Morillon and Sixt are all-season resorts, this area has an enormous amount to offer.

Lac Bleu with its beach, fantastic swimming, volleyball, tennis courts, horse riding and adventure park is within a 10-minute walk from Chalet Chocolat. Free daily activities for the family daily/eves put on for your enjoyment

Within a 5 minute (by car) radius of the chalet there is: a swimming pool complex with three pools and 60 metre slide. Rafting, paragliding, climbing and Via Ferrata, 1600 km's of mountain biking trails and 600km's of hiking trails. Hiking in the Cirque du Fer a Cheval with thirty 700 m waterfalls and wildlife galor.!

About Rebecca Watkins

We are a family of five. My husband John and I are parents to three beautiful teenage daughters. My husband designs and builds unique high quality homes in the UK and has for the last 20 years concentrated on creating the most environmentally friendly homes possible, even when this was not as fashionable as it is today. His success is attributed to his attention to detail and Chalet Chocolat is no exception. Some of you may know him from the Grand Designs C4 TV show where he appears in the Green Dragon Barn creation in Devon (Series 2). We lived in the Samoens area for 6 years while creating Chalet Chocolat. It was an extremely happy period in our lives and we felt as if we were on a constant holiday! Two of our daughters became successful ski racers and one even raced for Great Britain!

Rebecca Watkins purchased this chalet in 2006

Why Rebecca Watkins chose Samoens

John had been an avid mountaineer and climber in his early twenties and this was initially what drew us to the mountains. We chose the Grand Massif area as we felt that not only was this ski region one of the most snow-sure in Europe, but also because within a very small radius there is so much to do and see all year round. We have travelled extensively around the world, but this valley really offers something very special that we have not found elsewhere. Its beauty is second to none, it feels remote although transport to the area is easy and Geneva only 1 hour away. We have one of the six classified areas of France on our doorstep, the beauty of which takes your breath away. The list of activities in the area is virtually endless and Geneva, Annecy, Chamonix and Italy are less than an hour away!

What makes this chalet unique

As John was fully responsible for the build of Chalet Chocolat, we were able to ensure that it was done to the very highest standard. We were also able to put the money spared by the self build in to the quality of the furnishings and equipment which more truly reflect that of a very top end chalet. Chalet Chocolat is very popular indeed with many repeat bookings, we know this is as a result of our commitment to quality. The area offers 265 km's of piste to ski with some of the best runs in Europe including the 14km Cascade Piste that takes you through some of the finest scenery seen anywhere with Mont Blanc as a back drop. The summer period offers endless activities: lake and beach, outdoor swimming pools, adventure park, mountain biking, paragliding, horses, 600 kms of hiking trails...

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our holiday was a huge success and our base at Chalet Chocolat just completed a very happy time with my family. My memories of the chalet will be watching the stars form the velux window after retiring to bed and walking through the lavender bushes down the steps to the terrace-beautiful!

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CHALET, DEFINITION OF LUXURY

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over the new year and we couldn't have asked for a better chalet, or better hosts. We arrived after hours of delays due to transport problems but boy was it worth it! When we walked into the cosy, warm and stunning chalet with the shopping on the table, we completely forgot how tired we were. About the chalet: it was extremely well equipped, with all the kitchen utensils you could need, a great selection of DVD's, amazing home entertainment system, table football, very comfy sofas, charming bedrooms and of course; the hot tub! I can highly recommend the luxurious master bedroom, I never knew a bed could be so comfortable!

Regarding the location: just a 2 minute walk to the bus stop. We really didn't need a car at all as the free ski bus takes you to Morillon and Samoens. There was a supermarket at the top of the Morillon ski lift which is very convenient if you are cooking for yourselves. And the views from the chalet.. absolutely magical.

As we were a mixed group of beginners and intermediates, we loved Samoens and Morillon, which had a great range of green and blue slopes, with the reds of Flaine not far away. We unfortunately didn't get to ski the Cascades, a 14km long blue run from Flaine down to Sixt, as the snow wasn't good enough, but would have loved to try it if we'd gone later in the season. But we did enjoy the many authentic French café's and restaurants on the slopes.. just don't expect an English menu!

Overall, it was a once in a lifetime holiday, improved even more by the incredible helpfulness of John and Rebecca, and we will remember it warmly.

C Chocolat is Unmatched!

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have stayed at Chalet Chocolat, each time has been brilliant! The chalet is fantastic value for money, whether you ski or not. John and Rebecca can't do enough for you. Every room is clean, spacious and beautifully decorated. There were 12 of us staying this year, with more then enough room for us all! Chalet Chocolat is fantastically well equipped with every last detail thought through and is by far the most desirable property we have ever stayed in. We can’t imagine ever going anywhere else for our annual ski holiday now.

Luxury living amidst pure beauty

  • 5 of 5

Gorgeous chalet. Perfection is in the details and Chalet Chocolat has it all: beautiful amenities, luxury accommodation, stellar location and responsive hosts. From the thread count of the linens set atop divine beds, to the well stocked kitchen; from the elegant and comfortable couches to the foos-ball table, our whole group was happy even on the few days that rain storms kept us indoors. And on good weather days, the area around didn't disappoint. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Chalet Chocolat.

Owner's Response: We are totally delighted that all our hard work in the building and setting up of this magnificent chalet has paid off. If our guests leave with a sense that the chalet has matched or exceeded their expectations, then we are doing the right thing in every way and that is total job satisfaction! In the current financial climate, with money tight and jobs uncertain, It has never been more important, to know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the holiday you book, is going to be everything it is advertised as being! With these great reviews from every guest so far, we want to ensure this contentment continues.

Very attractive, well~equipped and comfortable.

  • 4 of 5

The description was accurate, the property was very well maintained and the owners clearly have very high standards and make every effort to ensure that their clients have the best possible holiday. However there were one or two features that could be improved.

* The cabin room described as a double would have struggled

had it been occupied by 2 people. It is very small and hardly

enough storage space for 2 people.

* The chalet is for 10 to 12 people but sociable conversation,

game playing, or TV/DVD watching together around the

fire was only comfortable for 5 people at the most because

of the arrangement of the sofas which we are specifically

asked not to move.

For many groups these would not be problems and overall I would highly recommend Chalet Chocolat.

Owner's Response: We are delighted you and your extended family enjoyed such a wonderful week at Chalet Chocolat! We really appreciate when our guests take the time to review their holiday experience with us. Regarding the two issues you mention above: we chose this highly responsive layout deliberately, so that the chalet would appeal to single families as well as the needs of larger groups, who almost always prefer a selection of activities to enjoy, and rarely do them simultaneously, unless when dining. * The 'cabin' bedroom you mention is almost always used by a single adult or a couple of children, and we provide a double mattress, to make the cabin room as comfortable as possible. The cabin room is light and airy with three windows, but has a smaller floorspace. Chalet Chocolat has permanent beds for 12 people, and in addition we offer 2 portable guest beds, a travel cot and a double sofa bed. This responsive design offers every permutation conceivable for the differing needs of every group. In addition to this, on our website we provide a floorplan which details each room in the chalet (to scale) and the sleeping provision available, so that guests are able to plan where they wish to sleep before they arrive. *Chalet Chocolat has 2 spacious living rooms. The first floor living room has generous 4 seater sofa and armchair around one cinema system, and another generous 4 seater sofa for those who wish to read or play board games. Downstairs, we have another living room with a sofa seating 5/6, with a second cinema system, a games console, a piano and football table. Of an average evening, a single family can do any one of these activities together, but larger groups almost always fragment: some will chose to enjoy the 7 seater hot tub, others might watch an action film upstairs, perhaps a cartoon downstairs, or a game of table football, a board game, a game of table tennis, piano...etc We offer dining provision for 12 persons both inside and outside which we feel is a necessity. However, we thought it unnecessary to provide every activity for 12 people simultaneously, without compromising massively on space. We always welcome feedback, but have no plans to make changes to our current layout, as up to now it has met the needs of most.

Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

After a long day driving we arrived to a spotless chalet, a roaring fire, comfy sofas, shopping delivered, a hot tub ready to jump into and beds made with crisp linen sheets. The Christmas tree was twinkling in the corner and the wine ready to pour - heaven. The next morning we woke to gorgeous views across the valley and from where I lay I could gaze at the sun rising over the snowy peaks. The chalet is so well insulated I had to turn our room heater off and open the windows as it was so warm. The kitchen has everything you need - even if you want to do your own baking and there's more than enough crockery to go twice round!

The location is great sitting nicely in the sun with a free ski bus stop a 100m down the road (great for getting around whether your skiing or not!). We were a mixed group of skiers and non-skiers but not being just a ski resort meant this was ideal for all. We went walking to see the frozen water falls near Sixt, sledging, iceskating, shopping in Chamonix and Samoëns, as well as lots of eating! Christmas Eve we had a lovely meal at the nearby La Terrasse de Verchaix near the church and can't recommend it enough for service and good food.

The skiing was great with hardly any queues for the lifts and those that had lessons had a great experience with ESF Morillon (booked in advance).

The owners were very helpful and hospitable, the whole process from enquiry to receiving the deposit back a pleasure, and always happy to answer any questions, although there weren't many as there already is so much attention to detail.

Please note the church bells ring at 7am but personally I couldn't think do a better alarm call!

Very highly recommended.

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at Chalet Chocolat. It's a beautifully constructed chalet perched on the side of the mountain with great views and a very short walk from a tiny rustic French village. It's very spacious, modern, executed to a very high standard and fully equipped. Only downside is that it's a drive (or bus ride) to the nearest lift at Morillon (it's on the other side of the valley with views of the slopes at Morillon and Samoen), but a short one and well worth the compromise - you'll struggle to find anything like this on the slopes at these prices. Debbie, from De La Terre catering is a must - food and the service is exceptional and she is a really nice person to have around. Big thumbs up, we'll definitely stay at Chalet Chocolat again if we decide to come back to the Grand Massif.

Debbie, who provides the flexible catering option does a wonderful job as you say, with great food delivered to the chalet for very reasonable prices. It certainly makes both my husband and I very happy to know that all our hard work has paid off and our guests leave at the end of their holiday happy and satisfied- you really couldn't ask for more-Thank you!
