Welcome to Travelers Rest, a historic twenty-three acre farm located in scenic King and Queen County, Virginia. As the name suggests, travelers and tobacco rollers would often stop to refresh themselves, as well as their horses, from the stream that flows at the foot of the hill. Even one of our very own founding fathers himself, George Washington, would stop and rest here on his travels to and from his home at Mount Vernon and Williamsburg - now you can do the same!
You'll be staying in our cozy, dormer-windowed, story-and-a-half house, which was first built in 1760 by a wealthy trader turned farmer named Gregory Baylor. After decades of neglect in the late 1800s, the home collapsed. This left the house in a ruinous state with only one-half standing beside a pile of bricks that had once formed the other half. Thankfully, some of the original woodwork survived and still remains in good condition to this day.
THIS IS A WORKING HORSE FARM, horses will be behind electric fencing, dogs are all to friendly and sociable thanks to all the guest who bring their dogs, sometimes it looks more like a fun DOG PARK. Our domestic geese are also friendly and sometimes waddle through the yard.
The house has since been beautifully renovated without losing any of its historical charm. Both bedrooms are upstairs; the master bedroom has a king sized bed with an attached two door bathroom for guest access, while across the hall is the guest bedroom which has two twin sized beds. Downstairs has a full kitchen, a second bathroom, a laundry and a living room. If necessary, the couch in the living room pulls out into a queen sized bed. The farmhouse itself comfortably accommodates four guests, but can fit up to six.
The full kitchen includes a refrigerator, stovetop oven, microwave, toaster oven, DE'LONGHI coffee maker (your Starbucks in the country), and your basic dish and silverware.
Indoor amenities include: heating and air, an indoor fire place, Wifi, a booklet containing information about local attractions, some classic board games and a TV and DVD player along with access to Netflix located in the living room.
Outdoor amenities include: outdoor patio furniture, fire pit, hammocks, small charcoal grill, and a fresh water pond for fishing.
We offer wonderful add-on experiences, too: Horseback riding, Wreathmaking/Floral Design Classes, and a Hands-on Farm Tour! Ask us for details.
So why not stop and take a break from your busy life to watch the birds skirt across the fields or count the geese that drift leisurely atop the water? I promise that after you take a moment to breathe in the fresh air, you'll fall in love with this place, just like we did!
