About this property

George Washington Slept Here!

Welcome to Travelers Rest, a historic twenty-three acre farm located in scenic King and Queen County, Virginia. As the name suggests, travelers and tobacco rollers would often stop to refresh themselves, as well as their horses, from the stream that flows at the foot of the hill. Even one of our very own founding fathers himself, George Washington, would stop and rest here on his travels to and from his home at Mount Vernon and Williamsburg - now you can do the same!

You'll be staying in our cozy, dormer-windowed, story-and-a-half house, which was first built in 1760 by a wealthy trader turned farmer named Gregory Baylor. After decades of neglect in the late 1800s, the home collapsed. This left the house in a ruinous state with only one-half standing beside a pile of bricks that had once formed the other half. Thankfully, some of the original woodwork survived and still remains in good condition to this day.

THIS IS A WORKING HORSE FARM, horses will be behind electric fencing, dogs are all to friendly and sociable thanks to all the guest who bring their dogs, sometimes it looks more like a fun DOG PARK. Our domestic geese are also friendly and sometimes waddle through the yard.

The house has since been beautifully renovated without losing any of its historical charm. Both bedrooms are upstairs; the master bedroom has a king sized bed with an attached two door bathroom for guest access, while across the hall is the guest bedroom which has two twin sized beds. Downstairs has a full kitchen, a second bathroom, a laundry and a living room. If necessary, the couch in the living room pulls out into a queen sized bed. The farmhouse itself comfortably accommodates four guests, but can fit up to six.

The full kitchen includes a refrigerator, stovetop oven, microwave, toaster oven, DE'LONGHI coffee maker (your Starbucks in the country), and your basic dish and silverware.

Indoor amenities include: heating and air, an indoor fire place, Wifi, a booklet containing information about local attractions, some classic board games and a TV and DVD player along with access to Netflix located in the living room.

Outdoor amenities include: outdoor patio furniture, fire pit, hammocks, small charcoal grill, and a fresh water pond for fishing.

We offer wonderful add-on experiences, too: Horseback riding, Wreathmaking/Floral Design Classes, and a Hands-on Farm Tour! Ask us for details.

So why not stop and take a break from your busy life to watch the birds skirt across the fields or count the geese that drift leisurely atop the water? I promise that after you take a moment to breathe in the fresh air, you'll fall in love with this place, just like we did!

Love love love this place!
We were in town for a conference and did not get to spend as much time at the property as we’d have liked. But the quiet, the views, the pond, the horses, the historical house and the hospitality of the owner are all everything we could have asked for in a quiet getaway. We will definitely be back!

Magnificent and majestic
Beautiful peaceful property and home as far as our eyes could see. A slice of paradise filled with history, horses dogs, hummingbirds and geese. We fished in the pond and lost count on how many blue gill and bass we caught. Agnes is an amazing host and made us feel like family. We walked the grounds always joined by her three sweet pups and happy friendly horses. We did not want to l leave and we hope to return one day. We cherish our fond memories. Travelers Rest is a diamond in the ruff.

Great relaxing weekend on the farm
We had such a wonderful weekend here. The property is amazing with horses and dogs running around, our dogs were loving the open space! Agnes is a wonderful host and was there if we needed anything, which we didn't. The house is very cutely decorated with old world charm and very comfortable for the three of us and 2 dogs. Thank you for a great time and look forward to staying with you again.

I was born in the rural town of Ostbevern, Germany. I followed my passion and was able to successfully earn my degree as a Master Floral Designer in Hamburg. I moved to the States in 1993 and have been living here in Virginia with my husband and two kids ever since. I absolutely love living out here in the country with all my horses where I'm surrounded by nothing but Mother Nature and other native wildlife. It's only out here where you'll find that the world moves just that bit slower.

What makes this property unique

Feeling adventurous? You'll have full range of the property to walk, explore, canoe, fish and visit all of the animals. We offer horseback riding lessons for beginners and trail rides for the more experienced riders ($50). I also offer a floral design class from my workshop where I make and sell all of my wreaths on Etsy. But if you're just looking for some rest and relaxation, then I suggest lying out back under one of the oldest pecan trees still living in Virginia today while you peacefully sway side to side, a book in hand, wrapped inside one of our colorful hammocks; or, wait till just before the sun has set to pull up a seat and start a fire and watch as the horses stoically graze throughout the fields.

Don't want to leave your furry friends behind? Don't worry; we have two sociable dogs and a barn cat or two of our own so we get it. Pets can be considered for an additional fee (leashes are required for dogs), so please reach out to us before booking to confirm. Feel free to unload at the door, then please park next to the garage side facing the barn. Please let me know when you arrive so we can put our very friendly dogs in the house!
*We also offer temporary boarding options for people traveling with horses (Daily: stall $30 / field $10)
