Culebra is a truly wonderful place and Villa Violette is an ideal place to stay while you are on the island. The house has great views of the harbor from both the upper (where we stayed) and lower levels. It is an easy walk to town to eat and there are a couple of descent restaurants closer by if you arrive later in the day or are worn out from snorkeling or spending time on the many beautiful beaches. All the rooms are equipped with ceiling fans and when my family of five stayed in March there was no need to turn on the air conditioning because the fans and the sea breezes were ideal for keeping the house comfortable. I do admit that my wife and I did turn on the air conditioning in our bedroom on the last night in order to get a good night sleep since the cacophony of rooster calls (very charming but also a little overwhelming) had begun to take its toll after three nights. My children, however, left their windows open since the sounds didn’t bother them as much. The owner is kind enough to provide ear plugs but if you are sensitive to sound and want to sleep with the windows open you may want to bring more heavy duty ear plugs or a white noise device. The upper level easily accommodated our family of five. We didn’t cook while we were there so I can’t vouch for the kitchen equipment. A quick perusal of the kitchen indicated the house was better equipped than some I rented but that it would be good to check with the owner ahead of time if you were planning something that requires special equipment. Having rented quite a few houses over the years in a wide variety of places I can say that Villa Violette represents one of the best values in house rentals that we have rented or seen. The owner was very pleasant and easy to deal with and was extremely responsive. He provided great advice about how best to enjoy the island and where to obtain provisions.
Our family of four loved Villa Violetta. We had the upstairs apartment. No one was renting the lower one. The photos of the inside while accurate don't do the rooms justice. The apartment was much nicer than what I was expecting from the website. The walls seem freshly painted and the views from the living room and deck are beautiful. Everything was absolutely clean. The owners communicated swiftly and clearly. They also provided very useful information about the island. The service while there was also excellent. When the grill's propane ran out , the caretaker came quickly to install a new one. The roosters and dogs are loud at night and in the early morning, so I did use the ear plugs provided. We spent our days snorkeling, body surfing and exploring the island's beaches( again- the owners informative material was very helpful) and ate our dinners out on the deck at night.
I would love to be able to return someday and would recommend Villa Violetta without reservation.
This was a perfect house for our family. We stayed in the upper part of the house which had three bedrooms. It had only one bath, but that worked fine with our three teenage kids. The place is cuter than the photos. The couches/futon in the living room have been updated since the photos. The porch was large with a big table for eating outside or sitting in the morning with coffee watching the harbor....and yes, listening to the roosters. :-) They are loud as stated in other reviews, but it does give the place a unique island feel and even my husband (not a farm boy) said the first morning back home that he even missed the roosters. There are earplugs in the nightstand, which was a nice touch and helpful to those not thinking ahead. The room air conditioners drown out the roosters and the occasional dog barking, but the weather was so perfect, we only used them a couple hours before dawn if we wanted a little more sleep. Richard was VERY helpful before our travel (and during) answering my multiple questions and giving us detailed information on jeep rentals, restaurants, activities, etc. We went on a snorkeling tour (with Kayaking Puerto Rico) as well as on our own. Culebra Divers will give you a map circling good snorkeling locations and rent you snorkeling gear to go out on your own if you prefer. We walked several places and felt so relaxed it was a huge pity we had to leave. Villa Violette was located close to town, but not right in the middle of everything. The concrete fence and gated entry was nice and the lawn manicured well in comparison to other places. It was very comfortable and safe.
Communication with our small group of 3, was timely, and Rich provided LOTS of information about the island, and its attractions. The 3 bedrooms are spacious, and we got a laugh when we discovered the ear plugs, supplied to drown out the roosters, that start crowing VERY early in the morning..... it's OK, you get used to them.
We dined out, and also used the well equipped kitchen for meals. We were there to scuba dive, and for underwater photography, and if that is your plan for this island, I can say this: DON'T BOTHER! The coral is not in good shape at all, and where we were taken, the visibility was not what we had all grown to expect in much better dive locations in the Caribbean. We only dove two days, and the second day was only because they were going to charge one of us who had given them a credit card number. After the first day we said we weren't interested in doing any more dives, and the answer was, we will charge your credit card because you didn't give 24 hours notice. The cost of really crappy diving was exorbitant, in the same price range as diving in, for example, the Turks and Caicos Islands... (around $115 a day) where the diving is so much better there is no comparison. We are all seasoned divers with between 350 and 675 dives logged, so we have been to many places around the world to compare Culebra with. The rest of the week we snorkelled, and with some local information, found a beach where there were a number of turtles to watch, in relatively shallow water, about 12-15 feet, so got some decent "available light" shots of them feeding and surfacing for air.
We rented a jeep, and you will need to do something similar if you want to see much of the island, or go out for dinner. Dinghy Dock (?) is highly recommended, as is Zak's Taco. We ran into our delightful Cape Air pilot a few times at night in some of the local restaurants, since she lives there, and she flies the plane back and forth a few times a day to San Juan.
Villa Violette was great, good location, good price, big house, clean, good for kids and the owner responded right away to any questions.
We loved Culebra and we would totally go back to Villa Violette.
it was also helpful that its walking distance to the car rental place and it's also walking distance to a restaurant and playground.
They provide towels, coolers for the beach and the house itself is very cute.
The pictures don't do it justice and Culebra is just amazing. LOVE IT!
This house was perfect for what we were looking for, easy access to all of the beaches on the island, comfortable, great, quick service, clean, well maintained. It was nice to be up out of the congestion of town but still not much of a drive anywhere. And the yard was a nice shady spot for reading for occasionally escaping that hot mid-day sun on the beaches! Our only complaint was the roosters... who begin crowing at 3 a.m. and don't stop until 9 a.m. We would definitely recommend it to friends and would stay here if we came back and wanted to stay close to town. Thanks!
