Overview

Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday home in Running Springs - Snow Valley - Safe Haven Forest Retreat

6 bedrooms 6 baths

Our 3,300 square foot residence was built to accommodate 25 people so that we could offer a comfortable place in nature for large groups to enjoy. Read some of the reviews of our satisfied guests.

Safe Haven Forest Retreat is a unique 2 acre property that sits at the end of Wilderness Road at an altitude of 6,200 ft. It is the last private property on the road with three sides connected to the National Forest. You'll enjoy the broad mountain views and surrounding forest in this tranquil retreat. The wilderness is your back yard to enjoy. And yet, it is less than 1 mile to the town of Running Springs, 8 miles to Lake Arrowhead, and 18 miles to Big Bear Lake. You are literally in the middle of the mountains yet have all the amenities of the easy to reach resort towns. You can explore the National Forest and the mountain communities at your leisure. Or, you can just stay put and enjoy the spacious cabin and activity centers around the property, such as the boating pond, the rock creek and sandy beach, archery & air rifle range, Volleyball court, the climbing wall, the outdoor chess board, the mini zip line with low suspension bridge, the toboggan run and the many paths around the property and into the forest.

Notice to people who want to party: Our property was developed as a forest retreat where people could find a SAFE HAVEN to pursue their enjoyment, personal / spiritual growth, connectedness with nature and each other in a positive and uplifting way. With this in mind, we don’t want to have wild, drunken, disorderly, abusive, and destructive behavior on the property. If you are looking for a place to have a wild drunken party, don't choose us.

About Robert Phelps

As retired teachers we wanted to develop a place in the mountains where children could come to learn about nature. Our dream evolved from the idea of starting a youth camp to a more inclusive one where people of all ages could find a Forest Retreat that would be a SAFE HAVEN to convene with nature.

We built the house to create a spacious and comfortable environment where our family and friends, and short term renters would find a SAFE HAVEN to pursue their enjoyment and connectedness with nature and each other in a positive and uplifting way. With this in mind, we don’t want to have wild, drunken, disorderly, abusive, and destructive behavior on the property. If you are looking for a place to have a wild drunken party to go nuts in nature, please look for another place.

Robert Phelps purchased this house in 2007

Why Robert Phelps chose Running Springs - Snow Valley

After a three year search for the appropriate property, we chose this place for it's unique location; having the National Forest as our back yard and being an easy drive to all the other mountain areas. It is in the middle of the mountains yet has easy access to all the mountain resort communities and activities. From our home in Orange County it takes us 90 minutes to get to the property. Once here, we feel we are in another world where we can breath deep, relax and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us.

What makes this house unique

We have a comfortable house with many activity centers around it like a mini resort that people of all ages will enjoy. Walk out the back door and you have wilderness. Walk out the front door and you have civilization. Walk around the property and you have the best of both worlds.

The size of the property (2 acres) and it's geographic features offer the space to create a number of activity areas. There is a boating pond with a sandy beach and rock creek with bridges across it. The tipi gathering area allows for small group activities overlooking the pond. There is also a climbing wall, Volleyball court, archery & air rifle range, large in ground chess board, and horseshoe pitch. And the picnic area behind the cabin allows for a large group gathering with fireplace, and B-B-Q units. There is also a small zip line over a suspension bridge 1 foot off the ground for kids. And, a 200 foot long zip line for those who take part in our Outdoor Adventure Program. Check the Amenities section under suitability for children.

Everything you could think of and more!

  • 5 of 5

Our large family stayed over the Valentine's/President's holiday and had a great time. This property was perfect for us ~ activities for all ages! At first we were disappointed we did not have snow but found there was more than enough for us to enjoy without the snow. The property is beautiful and has everything you need. The owners thought of everything! We had a problem with the water heater and the owner Robert was very prompt to return my call and resolved the issue. We definitely can't wait to return again... and highly recommend this property! Great opportunity for "city kids" to experience the outdoors in a safe environment! Thank you Robert for sharing your Save Haven Retreat, we're already looking forward to our next visit!

A PERFECT PLACE TO STAY

  • 5 of 5

We are a group of 15, three kids and 12 adults. The place was so nice. The house can accommodate 20 people, very clean, high tech and everything is provided from the dishes to cooking utensils that are good for more than 20 people. Well maintained. The owner Robert Phelps is very nice, though he was not there, you can contact him by phone and guide you properly. Next summer we're planning to go back there. I'm so picky and meticulous in renting vacation homes, but this one is a perfect place to stay.

Owner's Response: We're always happy to hear how much our guests enjoyed their stay. We have tried to think of and provide all the details needed for our guests to enjoy a comfortable stay. And, we try to be within easy reach by phone or email. The house was designed to provide a comfortable spacious environment for large groups and can actually accommodate 25 people.

Lots of bang for your buck!

  • 5 of 5

My large family and I stayed here for 3 nights. There was plenty of space, a roomy kitchen, and tons of stuff for the kids to play outside all day. We all enjoyed our time here.

Owner's Response: As retired teachers we always like to hear that families with children have enjoyed their time at Safe Haven. We have put a lot of effort into creating activity centers around the property that provide people of all ages the chance to enjoy time outdoors.

Wonderful, relaxing, spacious get away

  • 4 of 5

The house is perfect except for the beds. For individual sleeping it is probably perfect, but for couples, the beds are very uncomfortable. That is the only negative our group had.

Everything else is wonderful! there are 3 stories with 2 baths on each floor which makes it perfect for all of your daily needs. The main floor which has the kitchen and main table seating fit our groups needs and there was 21 one of us. There really is nothing this house does not offer inside or out. The bottom floor which we called the great room, has a mini kitchen, ping pong table, tables for playing games or eating, TV system with very cozy couches and a potbelly fireplace. You can go outside and use the rock climbing wall, volleyball court, tepee, mini zip line, go for a walk, which I did everyday or sit on the balconies and enjoy the beautiful views. I would rent this house again, but not stay as many nights because of the sleeping for couples. The owners are very accommodating and I enjoyed working with them. This is definitely a place for a large group, a girls get away or a family. Plenty to do but also very relaxing. The owners have really set up a wonderful "Safe Haven Retreat"!

Owner's Response: We are happy to hear that our guests found the place enjoyable and appreciate the many activity centers we provide around the property and the comforts we built into the house. We are sorry to hear that the bed situation is not all that comfortable for couples. We have one queen bed and three double beds. We realize this is not the best situation for couples staying many days. However, our vision for the place was as a short term occupancy for a large group which keeps the price affordable. There are more luxurious places that offer more comfort for couples, but they charge significantly more than we do. And, they do not have the outdoor activity centers that we do. So, there are trade offs that have to be made by owners developing a rental property and guests choosing a rental property. We chose to focus on economy rather than luxury. Also, we are not absentee landlords focused only on making a profit. We developed this property with a focus on service to a larger community. And, we take seriously all the issues that our guests bring to our attention and constantly look for ways to improve the property and provide a safe and comfortable environment for our guests. Thank you for your honest feedback.

Perfect for large groups

  • 5 of 5

Safe Haven Forest Retreat was ideal for our large group. It had three-levels, so we could easily separate our group meeting time in the 1st floor open area (with a ping pong table that we thoroughly enjoyed, but bring your own paddles!), eating time by the kitchen on the 2nd floor (more than enough plates, bowls, utensils, and a brand new, very efficient dishwasher, and tons of chairs), and sleep time mostly on the 3rd floor (with a smart bathroom layout so it was easy to assign rooms to particular bathrooms to prevent overcrowding). Everything was labeled so we knew exactly where to find items. And the owners are super responsive, returning emails within a few hours and getting the security deposit back to us promptly. If you have a large group, consider telling people to bring earplugs as the walls are a bit thin and those who sleep early may be disturbed by those playing board games late into the night :)

All in all, a great experience! We may make this our annual retreat location!

Owner's Response: We have aimed at making the place well organized and comfortable, even though it can get a bit noisy when you have a large group in one building. We do keep ping pong paddles and balls in a storage closet with other toys for youngsters. But, they do take a beating and seem to wear out quickly. If you are a real ping pong fan, yes bring your own paddle. Speaking of paddles, the boating pond is under construction and we hope to have it ready for summer.

Roomy, cozy...had a fantastic experience!!!!

The house was so roomy and accommodated 24 people perfectly. The optional adventure program was also well worth the price. The owners were very friendly and accessible. We will definitely be spreading the word about Safehaven Forest Retreat.
