About Michael Davis
I am 54 and English, but have lived with my wife and 3 children in Demark for the last 15 years.
I travel to Sri Lanka 4 times a year for a month at a time as I am completly besotted with Sri Lanka and its people.
Michael Davis purchased this house in 2011
Why Michael Davis chose Kandy
We brought this property by chance we had come to Sri Lanka to look at another house but in true Sri Lankan style it had been sold 3 days before we arrived by chance this property had just come on the market and we fell in love with it. My connection to Sri Lanka was made in 1984 when I was travelling and ended up in Unawattuna on the beach for 3 mths. This my home run by a family that
I trust 100%, part of the project is to help Sri Lanka get over its last 30 years of war and the terrible tsunami by helping the local people we support the local school and local buisnesses.
What makes this house unique
Many of our guests use Welikande as their base for visiting the central district of Sri Lanka and for Trekking in the Knuckles range of mountains.
Its relaxing to know you can get good food in lovely surroundings away from the turmoil of Kandy yet close enough to take a local bus or tut tut.
The views are simply fantastic you can watch the sun come up over the mountains often with the valley filled with clouds and then the sun set over the Victoria Dam reservoir. The wildlife and particually the birds (we have a game over breakfast of how many different breeds we can spot 21 is the record).During the day you can watch the eagles fly by at eye height.
The weather is idyllic- cool in the evenings and rarely above 28C during the day, if it rains its in the late afternoon accompanied by thunder and lightning. The very best thing is the service Shamarla and the unflappable Jeyakumar give without being obsequies just plane old fashion curtersy.
Guestbook comments from the manager
Welikande Guest House We stayed 2 weeks in Welikande Guest Housse, which is a newly established place and just opening up for guest. It is a wonderful and very cosy place. The location in the jungle mountains about 1 hour east of Kandy is an ideal place for vacation. At an altitude of about 900 meters the climate is wonderful, not too hot, a slight breeze, clouds against a blue sky. There is a true ”botanical” garden on the premises and magnificent views over the Knuckles Mountain Range and the Victoria Dam, and it is also a bird-watchers dream. However, also the ideal place for relaxation and ”watching the grass grow” or just enjoying the views over the mountains and valleys. The guest house is an ideal base for one day excursions, which they arrange with their expertise as to local, careful drivers, either in tuk-tuk or in a taxi. We did a 3-day excursion to the ”Cultural triangle” up north with a local taxi bus, also arranged by the guest house manager. There are only 4 rooms, but we understand that a few more will come. They are of nice, stylish simplicity with a large bathroom and coffee and tea facilities, and so is the sitting/dining room. All food served is a delicacy, and we tried almost every fruit and vegetables found on the island. It is reallyworth a try and we recomend it wholeheartedly.
