Our cottage is tucked into the forest in a small community with about 20 other cottages. It's a three-story 'A' frame with a balcony, bathroom with tub/shower, kitchen, two living rooms, two fireplaces and two bedrooms. Hiking, skiing nearby, relaxing place to hang out.
The ground floor is all newly refinished with lots of wood, tile and rustic interior. It has a kitchen, bathroom and living area with a wood-burning fireplace and is decorated with antiques from the region. There are two large wooden doors that cover a smaller door and large window. You can close the outer doors for extra warmth and privacy as needed.
The second floor has a small office area, a living room with a fireplace, WC with toilet and a balcony. There is also a door that leads out to the back of the cottage (it's built into a hill).
Ladder-style staircases connect all three floors. The third floor has a landing with a rack for hanging up clothes and two private bedrooms with locking doors. The larger bedroom has three single beds lining the walls and a chest of drawers (great for kids).
The smaller bedroom has a double bed and night stands (great for a couple). It also has a ceiling fan.
When you step outside, you're right in the forest. You can walk across the street and hike for miles in any direction. There is a spring about 100 meters from the cottage which has clean, cold water that tastes great. We fill several bottles every day and use it as drinking water.
If you've had enough relaxation in the forest, Trencin is just 5km away and has a lot to see and do including a medieval castle, downtown shopping, bars, restaurants, cafes, museums. There is also a lot to do in surrounding cities and villages. There is a fish farm that sells live fish. During summer months the grill is open and fresh fish, sides, beer and other items can be purchased and eaten at picnic tables next to the fish ponds.
Growing up in Fort Worth, Texas, I never new much about the world beyond Texas and the surrounding states. When I turned 18, I discovered international travel and have since visited over 30 countries. My wife and I bought this property in 2007 and try to spend part of the summer each year there with our kids.
I discovered Trencin, Slovakia in 1990 just after the Eastern Bloc opened up. I was fresh out of college and arrived as the first American and taught English to doctors at the local hospital. I made friends and continued to return every year or two for the last 20 years. We finally decided to buy our cottage in 2007 and use it as a home base for travel to other parts of Europe.
The cottage is located about 5 kilometers from the town of Trencin. There you can find anything you need including the historic downtown square with cobblestone streets and fountains below the thousand-year-old castle. Castle tours are available year round and numerous festivals and events take place at the castle and in the square. A very nice public swimming pool, just built in 2012, is open during the summer and has a great area for young kids. You can shop in the quaint stores in town or head just a few kilometers out of town to shop at two shopping malls and 'big box' stores. There is a centuries-old monastery just across the river, which is also open during spring and summer for tours. The river offers swimming and rock climbing on the cliffs. Ruins of other castles can be found in every direction within 20 minutes. If you love nature, history and outdoor activities, you'll love this area.
