Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cottage in Chugiak - The Hermitage Cottages
1 Bedroom, 1 Bath In Main Cottage, 2 Additional Bedrooms in separate cottage
The Hermitage is a cottage home on 2.5 wooded acres with beautiful gardens and views of Mt. Susitna and Knik Arm of Cook Inlet. Upon entering the property one might feel as though they have stepped into a fairytale. This unique two-story cottage offers a spacious bedroom with large comfy seating area. The cozy living room is Arts & Crafts inspired. The country style eat-in-kitchen with seating for six around the large hickory table, kindles memories of comfort food and lively conversation. The kitchen window frames a view of the patio garden. (optional) Serene privacy of additional sleeping-quarters in a separate two-story, two-bedroom cabin with summer porch. The separate cabin is connected to main cottage by a quaint pergola.
Plan your Alaskan adventure day trips while relaxing in comfort around the campfire with your own private view of Knik Arm and Mt. Susitna, locally known as the Sleeping Lady.
We thoroughly enjoyed this rental and meeting the hosts. This was our 7th vacation rental through HomeAway and the first time I've given a rating of 5 stars. The description and pictures in the listing are accurate, the property was spotless and very well equipped, and the hosts are wonderful people. I would highly recommend this to a friend or relative (though it’s correctly noted that the property isn’t suitable for small children or pets).
The cottage has a main building with a living room, kitchen/dining room, and combined bath/laundry/utility on the first floor, and upstairs a large bedroom with its own living area. Out back is a smaller second cottage joined by a short pergola, with only an upstairs and downstairs bedrooms, and a screened porch. We rented both for two weeks as we had an 18 year old daughter and a 21-year old son who flew in for a weekend, and it worked great for us. The lot is wooded and the cabin is surrounded by lovely gardens and landscaping. Location is in a quiet, low-density neighborhood with the sound of a creek nearby. (I’m a light sleeper but had no problems here.) None of the neighbors are visible through the trees, so it feels private and sylvan without being remote or isolated. Inside the cabins are beautiful and filled with quality furnishings and décor. The photos in the listing are really what it’s like, these aren’t fake glamor shots.
What makes this rental special is the truly excellent hosts and the fascinating cabins and grounds. After a week we were still discovering interesting objects in the house and admiring the gardens. It also was like home for us; being able to come back after a day in the great outdoors, kick back in patio chairs and have a bonfire or grill fresh fish on the BBQ. The hosts are very thoughtful and have stocked the house with everything needed…we bought some groceries at a local grocery, some items from a farmer’s market, and almost immediately upon arrival were cooking meals and living a “normal” life.
The location is out away from Anchorage (20 minutes from downtown), but that is a selling point as the area is more scenic, peaceful, and that much closer to the things we came to Alaska for. We were impressed with all the parks, places to hike, and wildlife within just a few miles.

This was one of the most wonderful places we have ever stayed. The house and gardens are extraordinary! Sally is truly a Master Gardener. The view of the inlet is awesome! We enjoyed it from the kitchen window as we ate. Then later, as we drank wine by the outdoor fire. We love to cook and we really appreciated the well stocked kitchen. It was a joy to cook in. Pat and Sally are very kind and gracious hosts. We loved Alaska and truly enjoyed our stay. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you Pat and Sally for sharing your beautiful home with us.
Owner's Response: So wonderful to have you as guests at the Hermitage Cottage and we are thrilled you found it a wonderful place to say. We hope to see you again during your future travels to Alaska.

Relaxing, peaceful, beautiful views. The Hermitage Cottage encompasses much of what makes Alaska special. I found the cottage to be very clean. the bed was more comfortable than my own, and the kitchen had everything a person would need to prepare and serve a gourmet meal. My favorite meal was the one we cooked on the grill and ate at the picnic table on the backyard patio with our own private view of Knick Arm and Mt Susitina. The cottage is centrally located between Anchorage and Palmer which gave us easy access to lots of options. Thank you for my beautiful visit!
