About Pat or Sally Tilton

We both grew up in Alaska. Pat was 9 years old when his family arrived before statehood in 1956. Sally was 13 years old when her family drove the Alcan in 1967. We raised our two sons in Chugiak and have called it home since 1982. We are both retired now and enjoy working in our studio creating something new out of something old.

Pat or Sally Tilton purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Pat or Sally Tilton chose Chugiak

The very moment we stepped foot on the Hermitage property in 1990, we knew we wanted to make it our home. This was before we had gone to the backyard and discovered the amazing view of Knik Arm and Mt. Susitna! During the late 80's the housing market in the area was in a severe slump. This property with its special qualities as well as it's special needs had been on the market for two years. We were up for the challenge and fortunately for us were able to obtain the property. Over the years we have continued to make improvements to make it what it is today. It is artistically unique and quaintly comfortable. We enjoy the beauty, serenity, and convenience of its location. The detached 2 story garage has been converted into a live-in art studio. This is where we live and create during the spring, summer, and fall months. During the winter months we move back in to the coziness of the Hermitage Cottage. And sometimes we escape the cold Alaskan winters to travel to South East Asia. Sharing the Hermitage Cottages makes this possible.

What makes this cottage unique

The Hermitage Cottage with its beautiful garden provides a unique blend of options. The main cottage, if only one bedroom is needed can be rented at a lower rate. For families with older children or couples traveling together and sharing expenses, the addition of the small cottage provides extra sleeping accommodations. The backyard with the sound of Peter's Creek and the serene view of Cook Inlet and Mt. Susitna provides privacy with a sense of Alaskan seclusion; Yet the property is conveniently located to amenities and nearby points of interest. The location provides an easy stepping off point for amazing day trips such as a day in the city of Anchorage or the quiet yet charming farming town of Palmer, hiking around Hatcher's Pass and historic Independence Gold Mine, fishing or flight seeing in historic Talkeetna, taking the train or driving to Seward for whale watching or fishing, visiting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Park near Portage Glacier or traveling to Whittier through the longest tunnel in North America, walking on the Matanuska Glacier, or easy hiking to near-by Thunderbird Falls and Reflection lake, hiking, bicycling, or kayaking at Eklutna lake, or simply enjoying a relaxing day in the privacy of your Homeaway from home.

Absolutely Perfect

  • 5 out of 5
Perfect....that sums it up! We had planned a two week Alaskan vacation beginning in Homer. We were looking for a place north of Anchorage, yet not too far from from the airport.

We found The Hermitages and thought it looked ideal. We were not disappointed. It was even better than the description. The main cabin is beautiful with all kinds of artwork. The kitchen is perfect for cooking......it is better equipped than my kitchen! Upstairs is a large bedroom with its own living area and TV. The bathroom is downstairs so keep that in mind if anyone in your group has difficulty with stairs.

The guest cabin with extra sleeping quarters is footsteps away and joined by a pergola....artwork even outsid in between cabins! There is a bedroom on both first and second floor of guest cabin. You will use the main bathroom in the other cabin...and this was not a problem at all.

We enjoyed the patio with fire pit and gorgeous view. Pat and Sally had the wood all ready for a fire when we arrived...so nice!

Our host were warm and gracious. We felt at ease and enjoyed chatting with both of them during our stay.....but they were not intrusive at all....I wish we had been able to visit with them a little more!

While staying at The Hermitage we drove up to Talkeetna to go flight seeing around Denali. Unfortunately weather did not allow us to go up so we just enjoyed the town.

This is the perfect place for a couple or a small group of adults. It would not be the best set up children. Our stay there was one of the highlights of our vacation. We miss it!

Outstanding experience

  • 5 out of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed this rental and meeting the hosts. This was our 7th vacation rental through HomeAway and the first time I've given a rating of 5 stars. The description and pictures in the listing are accurate, the property was spotless and very well equipped, and the hosts are wonderful people. I would highly recommend this to a friend or relative (though it’s correctly noted that the property isn’t suitable for small children or pets).

The cottage has a main building with a living room, kitchen/dining room, and combined bath/laundry/utility on the first floor, and upstairs a large bedroom with its own living area. Out back is a smaller second cottage joined by a short pergola, with only an upstairs and downstairs bedrooms, and a screened porch. We rented both for two weeks as we had an 18 year old daughter and a 21-year old son who flew in for a weekend, and it worked great for us. The lot is wooded and the cabin is surrounded by lovely gardens and landscaping. Location is in a quiet, low-density neighborhood with the sound of a creek nearby. (I’m a light sleeper but had no problems here.) None of the neighbors are visible through the trees, so it feels private and sylvan without being remote or isolated. Inside the cabins are beautiful and filled with quality furnishings and décor. The photos in the listing are really what it’s like, these aren’t fake glamor shots.

What makes this rental special is the truly excellent hosts and the fascinating cabins and grounds. After a week we were still discovering interesting objects in the house and admiring the gardens. It also was like home for us; being able to come back after a day in the great outdoors, kick back in patio chairs and have a bonfire or grill fresh fish on the BBQ. The hosts are very thoughtful and have stocked the house with everything needed…we bought some groceries at a local grocery, some items from a farmer’s market, and almost immediately upon arrival were cooking meals and living a “normal” life.

The location is out away from Anchorage (20 minutes from downtown), but that is a selling point as the area is more scenic, peaceful, and that much closer to the things we came to Alaska for. We were impressed with all the parks, places to hike, and wildlife within just a few miles.

Amazing Cabin - Awesome View!

  • 5 out of 5
This was one of the most wonderful places we have ever stayed. The house and gardens are extraordinary! Sally is truly a Master Gardener. The view of the inlet is awesome! We enjoyed it from the kitchen window as we ate. Then later, as we drank wine by the outdoor fire. We love to cook and we really appreciated the well stocked kitchen. It was a joy to cook in.
Pat and Sally are very kind and gracious hosts. We loved Alaska and truly enjoyed our stay. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you Pat and Sally for sharing your beautiful home with us.

High Quality, Tranquil and Beautiful

  • 5 out of 5
Relaxing, peaceful, beautiful views. The Hermitage Cottage encompasses much of what makes Alaska special. I found the cottage to be very clean. the bed was more comfortable than my own, and the kitchen had everything a person would need to prepare and serve a gourmet meal. My favorite meal was the one we cooked on the grill and ate at the picnic table on the backyard patio with our own private view of Knick Arm and Mt Susitina. The cottage is centrally located between Anchorage and Palmer which gave us easy access to lots of options. Thank you for my beautiful visit!
