We are retired, empty-nesters not ready to leave this beautiful property. My husband and I grew up in the Minneapolis-St Paul area. We are experienced vacation rental travelers, and enjoy sailing, fishing, golfing, motorcycling, hiking, and the arts: theater, musicals, photography, museums.

Shirley purchased this house in 1997

We wanted to enjoy the best of rural living (privacy, solitude, a variety of birds and wildlife, wide-open spaces and heavily-wooded areas) with an easy commute to Minneapolis-St. Paul to enjoy everything city-living has to offer and the Mpls.-St. Paul airport.

Being close to Sillwater, Minnesota, a town I visited often before moving here, has so much to offer: a beautiful waterfront, historic architecture, unique shops and restaurants was a bonus.

Our home is well-built and maintained. Original kitchen appliances/sink, carpeting, and furnace have been replaced. Wood floors in the 3-season porch and 3rd bedroom upstairs. Central air conditioning is also a fairly new addition.

WONDERFUL LOCATION-RURAL VIEWS WITH CITY AMENITIES

  • 5 out of 5
Our family has history with Stillwater MN. So this was a prime location for our weeks stay. Located near the St. Croix river we took advantage for fishing, scenic paddle wheel tours, and old town shopping and wine tasting. Close enough to St.Paul and Twin cities for a Cher concert as well. House has everything for a very comfortable stay and in relaxing - winding down while there. The host was very attentive and wanted to make sure that you were well taken care of. She had prepared many references for those that may be unfamiliar to the region as well. A delightful Say ... Jan & Whit Skaling

Owner's Response: We absolutely enjoyed having you and Jan as our guests. Also delighted that you absolutely made the most of your vacation while you were here. After you suggested having a garlic press available, I've searched locally with no luck. Will be heading to Stillwater to get one, which I'm also in need of to prepare a dish called "Drunken Noodles": Italian sausage, peppers, white wine, Italian seasoning, garlic and wide noodles.

ABOVE AND BEYOND

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed here because my son had state power lifting in Osceola and staying at the house was cheaper then renting a hotel for five people. It also saved us money by being able to cook at the house rather then going out to eat. The house had everything you could manage, even things we forgot (Butter and a Toothbrush). There was a basket of panda cookies (my kids favorite) and granola bars on the table. Not only was the house equipped with the necessities but items you would not expect (Shampoo, soap, food, sleds, snow pants, etc). My children loved the house and would like to go back when it is nicer out and they can enjoy the pond out back with an amazing view. My daughter had a blast sledding down the hill in the back yard and playing with the neighbor dog Morgan. There was plenty of room for all of us plus. The house is in the country with a great big yard, but has a number of things to do with in an hour or less. On Saturday we took the day and went to The Mall of America which was under an hour drive. Shirley the owner was amazing and very helpful. I would recommend a stay here for anyone. Thank you Shirley for sharing your home with us.

Owner's Response: Very happy to hear you enjoyed your stay. I've already included in our guest scrapbook the page your family made before you headed home to share with other guests about your stay. Seeing how creative you were, you've given me the idea to have a basket of scrapbook materials handy for future guests to create their own page about their stay.

Vacation rentals that had something special and totally unexpected that made me feel more like being at home instead of just a place to sleep and eat were the places where memories were made for me. I'm happy to do the same for our guests.

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT WINTER GETAWAY WEEKEND!

  • 5 out of 5
We used this rental for an annual "girls' getaway weekend", which included six women total. From the very beginning, it was clear that this was not your typical VRBO. Shirley is extremely organized and detail-oriented, which was clear in every email message. She responded quickly (sometimes in less than an hour) whenever I had any questions and offered many great suggestions for eating and activities out. Upon arriving (on Valentine's Day), we were surprised with six roses and some cherry heart treats on the dining room table. There were also Valentine's Day towels in the kitchen and bathroom. Such a lovely touch! The view from the living room was breathtaking with the woods and a lake/pond right out the door. Some in our group snowshoed and cross-country skied on the lake and had an amazing time. We visited with the neighbor who owned the ice rink and welcomed us to use that too. He was shoveling it off after a fresh snow. The kitchen was well-stocked with items that the owner invited us to use. This came in handy when we realized we had forgotten an onion and found one in the pantry! Rather than charging a cleaning fee, Shirley asked us to contribute to some of the cleaning before we left. This was very minimal, and things we likely would have done anyway. Her detailed directions about what she wanted done were very helpful. For a group of six people, the only thing we agreed we might look for in the future is a second bathroom. However, that isn't anything wrong with this property. It's just something to consider if you have a large group of adults. We were unanimous in deciding that the single bathroom would not deter any future visits. We'll likely be back next year! I have generally had good experiences with VRBO properties, but this one definitely takes the prize. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway weekend with family and friends, I highly recommend this place! Shirley's attention to detail and friendliness made me care about the house as much as if it was my own. She should be named "rock star" of VRBO!

Owner's Response: Lisa, so glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review. We would be thrilled to have your group back. You were excellent guests!
Next year when you return, the full bathroom and master bedroom upstairs will be available, and the twin bed upstairs will be replaced with a queen.

PERFECT GETAWAY-PICTURES DO NOT DO JUSTICE!

  • 5 out of 5
Your home was so well prepared and the MANY thoughtful items you were willing to share in the kitchen and bath were so appreciated- that is so rare! You have gone above and beyond and that makes your home highly desirable. Rentals do not usually leave behind the many useful items that are in an every day home, like you have-wow-kuddos! I am VERY picky about cleanliness above all and was so very delighted to find you are also. We have stayed in many vrbo's over the years now and most of the time it's the bare minimum or not even that. THANK YOU!!!!
Bedrooms are spotless and very clean top to bottom, especially the bed linens and carpets. Bedroom closets on the main floor are very large, one is a nice walk in. Bathroom is large and roomy and more than properly stocked!
There was a lot of snow the weekend we went but the roads to get to the house were well maintained. The owners had the circle driveway plowed and it made a great place to walk our dog. Loved having the double garage to park in!
I was surprised to find that it felt like we were driving to a home in Colorado! Stillwater is (in my opinion) as charming and lovely as any of the Colorado mountain towns I've seen (I lived there 14 yrs, seen most of them). What a gem of a place to visit! Can't wait to go back and see more of this area.
Didn't get to ice skate, but it's visible from the house-looks like fun! Maybe next time.
My daughter inquired as to 'why' would someone let you use such a nice house knowing someone could damage it...that's how nice it was...
My only beware- it has snowy walks and drives- too much accumulation to keep walks and driveway 'perfectly' plowed/cleaned-they try and do the best possible job but if you're elderly be careful and maybe they would even put down salt or something if you asked...it's what I call a mountain home and in the winter its beautifully snowy! We had no trouble at all with this and know this is par for the course!
We will definitely come back again-would love to fish the lake some time!
The price charged is probably this cheap only because it's not 'downtown' Stillwater- otherwise she could/should charge quite a bit more!

JUST WHAT VRBO SHOULD BE

  • 5 out of 5
Four of us stayed here for NYE and it was just lovely - we felt like we were being hosted by Shirley instead of renting a house. Everything was clean and ready - perfectly charming and cozy - fully stocked with kitchen implements - she even had the bathroom stocked with shampoo and toothpaste/spare brushes. There was plenty of beautiful wooded space for the dog to run and us to wander. We would have skated on the lake only it was 5 below air temp so we spent the evening by the fire watching the ball drop and playing games. We loved the privacy and quiet and staring out at the snow covered woods. Would love to go back in the summer when the willow tree is dripping with leaves and we can use the hot tub! The perfect getaway - only an hour from the cities but it feels like you're up North.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to share how much you enjoyed your stay! An excellent review is worth more than an ounce of gold! I appreciated the phone call I received from another house guest thanking me for having the house available for your NYE party and her honesty in telling me an accident was going to cause me some extra cleaning to prepare for the next guest. We do hope to see you in the summer. Our property is beautiful during every season!
