Pretty much as expected.

Our host, Dave, was very accommodating. We never met Julia.

We had several minor issues. The first night and the next morning there were many insects inside the house. It turns out that the bathroom window was open and didn't have a screen. Also regarding the bathroom, the lighting is poor, the window is over the sink and the mirror is over the toilet. We managed to work around this. I would suggest a florescent light be installed on the side of the cabinet or ceiling. The mirror, I don't know, perhaps put it on a piano hinge so it can be swung around and be used with the sink.

I think a microwave is a necessity, a TV would be good and a landline phone is important because cel phone reception is so poor.

The home was clean and the beds were comfortable. The interstate was a couple of minutes away. We were actually visiting friends and relatives in Connecticut. We were able to get down to Hartford in less than 75 mins.

There is a great Deli right down the street which we strongly recommend.

We would recommend this rental as long as everyone is aware it's lacking in some amenities.

Wonderful weekend away!

  • 5 out of 5
We absolutely loved this nice little getaway house for the weekend. Perfect location, only 5 minutes from downtown Brattleboro for a little food and shopping and the house is down the street from a fabulous country deli. Owners were excellent and very welcoming to their home! The house was also very spacious and clean, we were very satisfied with this rent and would highly recommend this to people of all ages for both relaxation and adventure.

Disappointed

  • 2 out of 5
I truly hate to give such nice people a bad review. However, I was deeply disappointed in my stay.
This is not to say it may not be a good fit for some folks but knowing what your walking into would be helpful.
I gave one star for being a perfect location for me. I gave another star for the owners being so kind.
The rest went horribly downhill! Had they not given me such a great deal I definitely would have asked for my money back and gone to a hotel.
At first arrival I noticed a musty smell. Then went on to notice how dirty the place was. It wasn't vacuumed, crumbs were on the counter, the refridgerator wasn't cleaned,it was really dusty....For some guests this may not be a big deal but for me I was mortified. I spent my first two hours cleaning just so I could relax.
On top of this the internet signal was so low that we couldn't use any of the devices we brought. That most definitely should not be on the list of amenities! There also was no microwave - which was listed - I brought a bunch of leftovers for our meals. Lastly there shouldn't be a photo of the living room with a TV in it. I knew there was no cable however the owners said they would loan me a DVD player. Well, that tv was no longer in there let a lone a DVD player.
I have stayed in many rentals and have been very happy. This was my first time being dissatisfied. I am deeply disappointed because I visit Brattleboro often and this rental is the perfect location for me. Its spacious and adorable. Its just not taken care of :(. Hard to get cozy with such a strong musty odor and feeling nothing has been scrubbed in a long time. If ever!
I think if the owners did an over haul cleaning then maintained it as well as fixed the internet connection issue it would turns things around and they would start getting some positive reviews.
For me I wont be returning.

Owner's Response: We want to thank our guest for taking the time to provide feedback about her stay. It only helps us to provide an outstanding experience for our guests.

We deeply apologize for the negative aspects of her stay, and have taken major steps to overcome the deficiencies. We have redoubled our cleaning protocol to make sure that the house is spotless, including but not limited to purchasing a brand new vacuum cleaner, cleaning and scrubbing down every inch of the house to make sure it is completely free of dust, opening windows regularly and dehumidifying to eliminate any trace of mustiness, and generally amplifying our vigilance of cleanliness. We had a bad day in preparing the house for this guest and it won't happen again.

Internet reception has been improved by replacing and moving our existing router; a subsequent guest reported no problems and was happily able to stream movies on Netflix with no problem whatsoever.

The television seen in the picture was not listed in the amenities, and unfortunately, as we warned our guest might be case, it was not working. Due to a miscommunication on our part we weren't aware that a TV had been said might be available, there was indeed no TV or DVD and for that slipup we once again apologize. Certainly if the guest had communicated to us we would immediately have gone to rent one for her. Similarly, the microwave oven had had to be removed to replace a broken one in our other rental unit, and we forgot to remove it from the list of amenities. If she had just knocked on our door (we live right next door) we would have been delighted to either let her use our microwave or gone out and bought a new one. It has been removed from the list of amenities but should a traveler require it we will be more than happy to provide one.

We take our customer satisfaction with the highest seriousness and regret that a guest had a less than positive experience, and we can confidently assure future guests that the issues that she has raised have been resolved. Guests can expect a spotless house and full expectation that the amenities promised will be provided. And again, we live right next door so we encourage guests who do have questions or special needs to communicate right away with us so problems and disappointment can be avoided.

We hope that this guest will return in the future and hope that as consolation she will accept one night's stay free of charge.

Thank you,

Culbertson House Management

Notes:
Brattleboro, a lively, arts-oriented town in Southern Vermont, offers many possibilities for entertainment year-round. Galleries, an orchestra, the famous First Friday Gallery Walk, New England Youth Theater, unique shopping and excellent dining make the town seem bigger than it is. In addition to its proximity to major ski resorts like Mt. Snow and Stratton, the town boasts a superb cross-country complex, a hockey-size skating rink and its own T-bar ski slope, open for night skiing, perfect for beginners and children (and a bargain at only $5.) For summer vacations there is a fine golf course, many hiking trails, secluded swimming holes nearby, a big public pool, softball in the park, plus lots of concerts and other activities.Brattleboro is a great place for your vacation!
