MALE: The Capital of the Maldives is a good place to visit if you want to leave your island paradise for a bit. Sites include:
OLD FRIDAY MOSQUE: Hukuru Miskiiy is the oldest mosque in the country, dating from 1656. It’s a beautiful structure made from coral stone into which intricate decoration and Quranic script have been carved. The interior is superb and famed for its fine lacquer work and elaborate woodcarvings. One long panel, carved in the 13th century, commemorates the introduction of Islam to the Maldives.
LOCAL MARKETS: This is where you will get a real flavour of the Maldives. People from all over the country gather here to sell home-grown and imported vegetables. Coconuts and bananas are the most plentiful produce, but look inside for the stacks of betel leaf, for wrapping up a ‘chew’. Just wandering around, watching the hawkers and the shoppers and seeing the vast array of products on display is fascinating and as real a Maldivian experience as possible. There is also a nearby fish market which is worth a visit.
Shopping: The northern end of Chaand-hanee Magu in Male is the place to be if you are looking for souvenirs to take home. You will find a range of batik sarongs, wraparounds, wooden handicrafts, candles and other knick knacks from shops lining the streets.
Guided Trips: A guided trip is a good way to get a flavour of the Maldives. You will be taken around the narrow scooter clogged streets of what is one of the world’s most unique capitals. Along the way you will visit some of the Maldives most important sites including the tomb of Abu Al Barakat which is the oldest mosque in the country as well as the newly refurbished National Museum which has a number of displays showing pre-Islamic Buddhist relics as well as a number of items owned by the sultans of the time.
