WOULD STAY ELSEWHERE NEXT TIME

  • 3 out of 5
5 of us ladies stayed here for our 20+ year college reunion.

In general, the property was pretty clean and comfortable. The house offers plenty of room. We enjoyed the Lake City area and dining at the nearby Chickadee Cottage. The owner provided some nice toiletries for our use as well as coffee and tea.

The listing states there are 3 rooms with 2 twin beds in each room. Actually, all 3 rooms contain 1 day bed plus 1 trundle bed. The trundle beds were not the kind that can be raised up but instead lay on the floor. This would have been helpful for us to know up front. Trundle beds might be fine for young children but we being adults found them uncomfortable.

Nearby railroad tracks made for noisy sleeping quarters. Freight trains blared their horns at all hours of the day and night, keeping many of us from getting good sleep.

It would have been helpful if all of the upstairs bedrooms had room darkening shades or curtains. All of us were awakened around 5:30 a.m. to bright sunlight through the thin, light curtains/blinds, unfortunately.

There were ant traps on the kitchen floors upon our arrival. We saw several small ants despite our efforts to clean up after ourselves.

The basement was too cold for us to enjoy. The air conditioning was set on the thermostat at 72 degrees making it pleasant upstairs but frigid downstairs.

The owner doesn’t allow outside shoes in the house, drinks/food in the living room areas (kitchen only), and limits winter fireplace use to 1 hour/day. We can understand she has had negative experiences in the past but we felt these rules were a bit rigid. Like many people on vacation, we would have enjoyed a cup of coffee/tea/soft drinks and eating snacks in front of the TV. Other rentals we’ve stayed at had an automatic timer on the fireplace switch; this might be a good idea here.

When we raised these issues to the owner, she said most basements are cold and her guests found it refreshing, and we should close the basement vents. Regarding the ants, she offered to have the housekeeper come and inspect the problem.

Unfortunately, we would not recommend the property and would not stay there again.

Owner's Response: I am happy that you found something you could appreciate about my home and took time to point it out. It’s unfortunate that you took so much issue with the other elements of your stay. You are the first guest of the 24+ that have stayed in my home to express any complaints. The listing is very clear as to what is included in the home by way of beds. Despite your experience, many guests have slept in those very beds comfortably and seemed to take no issue with the curtains (the curtains and shades are clearly showing in the photo’s online). Lake City is a small town with a train that runs through the middle of it. Train noise is audible throughout the town and yet thousands flock to Lake City every Summer despite this blaring “menace.” My property is no different from any other property in town in this regard. A simple review of a map of the city would have clearly shown you that there is a railway going directly through the middle of town; HomeAway(HA) also provides a map showing its location in relation to the train track. The basement temperature is easily addressed through adjusting the vents or the thermostat. Basements are generally cooler; based on the basic laws of physics, heat rises. Finally, the ant traps were purely a preventive measure. I had my property manager examine the home; there were no ants. What was noticeable is that you had fruit sitting out on the kitchen counters uncovered; it’s feasible that the ants could have actually come from products you brought into the house. I find it surprising that you criticize me for having rules for the treatment of my home. My rules are not unreasonable, and are a result of the high volume of damage and theft. I’ve had towels & pillows stolen, sheets damaged, gum left in my carpet, juice spilled on my white carpet, faucets left on, wood floors, microwave & my dining room table all damaged and that’s just the beginning. I raised 4 kids in that house and in 6 months time, grown adults have done more damage in 2 days time than my kids and their friends did in 10 years. I have rules in place to protect my property. My home is being rented out as a private residence; the advantages are considerable, but certainly there are differences that should be expected. I work hard to keep my home in beautiful condition and provide amenities that others do not. It’s unfortunate that HA doesn’t offer property owners the same luxury to rate guests who damage property, disrespect our homes & waste our time.
