Caleta Tortuga, 'Turtle Cove' in Spanish, is located on a scenic hillside overlooking Ensenada Honda. Copy and paste this Google Maps link into your favorite web browser to see exactly where the house is located:
It is situated in such a way that the trade winds provide excellent ventilation year-round. For times when nature’s cooling isn’t quite enough, there are two air conditioners to help keep you comfortable. With two bedrooms and a futon in the living room, there is ample room for up to six. Two full bathrooms mean no waiting for the facilities. The front deck is spacious, welcoming and an ideal place to relax and plan your day. It faces south-southeast so watching a beautiful Caribbean sunrise with a hot cup of your favorite beverage is easy and convenient. The tiled kitchen features a full-size stove and refrigerator, blender, microwave oven and a complete assortment of cookware, utensils and accessories. For those seeking a golden glow, the wrap-around deck allows for ideal sun light no matter what the time of day. The Kenmore gas grill is there if you want to enjoy a juicy burger or sizzling steak. When you are ready to go exploring, you will find that Caleta Tortuga is just about perfectly located and only minutes away from anywhere on the island. Other amenities include ceiling/pedastal fans throughout, linens, towels, 32-inch flat screen TV and DVD player.
For those unfamiliar with the island, Culebra is located about midway between mainland Puerto Rico and St. Thomas, USVI. With a full-time population of only 1,800 people, it is quiet, peaceful and a haven for those who seek to unwind and feel stress melt away. In spite of our diminutive size and population, however, we are home to several stellar restaurants. Our favorite is easily Zacos Tacos, but don’t let the name fool you. There is far more on the menu than just tacos, although we have never found a reason to try anything else. Other noteworthy restaurants include Susie’s, El Eden and the Dinghy Dock, just to name a few. You will also find not only the world famous Flamenco Beach, but many less-traveled and equally breath-taking beaches, all waiting to be discovered by you. But you don’t have to take our word for it, because Travel and Leisure magazine named Culebra as its top island in the Caribbean for 2013!
When on Culebra, make sure you find the time to visit Isla Culebrita, the small island off the eastern shore. It is home to Tortuga Beach, the inspiration for the name of this home. Also on Culebrita are some fabulous tidal pools fed by waves coming in from the open ocean. The power and fury of this display is truly inspiring. We love to scramble across the rocks, find a good vantage point and just lose ourselves in the majesty. It is almost a spiritual awakening.
One final note: As has been mentioned in some reviews below, the house is in a residential neighborhood and your day just might begin with the roosters crowing. You might also see or hear evidence of dogs, lizards, iguanas and of course, lots of birds. After having vacationed on several different Caribbean islands, we have come to expect such “local color” and to us it is a welcome reminder that we are not in Kansas anymore. We mention these facts because we genuinely want you to love your stay on Culebra so that you will return again and again, regardless of where you choose to lay your head.
We are the brand new owners of Caleta Tortuga and are very excited to be a part of this wonderful island. As a professional couple with plans to retire to Culebra within the next few years, we are offering our future retirement home to you while we count the days until we can live there full time.
Erik and Nancy purchased this house in 2013
After vacationing in the Caribbean on and off for several years and visiting many lovely places, we discovered and fell in love with Culebra in 2012. It is small, quiet and has everything we want and need. If you are interested in nightlife and wild times, Culebra might not be right for you. If you value seclusion and sparse population along with beautiful beaches and friendly locals, Culebra has exactly what you need.
This is a modest home with a beautiful view, lots of room to spread out and centrally located so that the island is at your fingertips. Yes, there are far larger, nicer, and more prestigious homes on the island, and if you want the ultimate luxury hideaway, click the back button and keep on looking. This house is all about charm, convenience and affordability.
Caleta Tortuga stands out as my favorite accommodation in Culebra. My good friend and I have been making an annual trip to Culebra for the last 5 years as a way to escape the frigid winters in New York. This year, we decided to share Culebra with a few other friends. I have stayed in several different places throughout the years and Caleta Tortuga is certainly our favorite and we plan to stay again next year. The home has everything you need and more! From snorkeling gear/beach items to extra towels/linen and a fully stocked kitchen (my friend was so happy to find a tostonera to make us homemade plantains for breakfast!), you don't need to worry about having to buy anything but whatever groceries you like to cook during your stay. This certainly made our arrival in Culebra a seamless experience. Dick, who is the house caretaker, was so easy to reach from the very first moment we arrived on the island and was a wonderful help, available at all times. Erik and Nancy, the owners, were extremely professional, prompt and a delight to interact with remotely. I could go on and on about how great of an experience we had this year and Caleta Tortuga was responsible for a major portion. If you like to wake up to nature's alarm clock (roosters crowing) hugging a fresh mug of coffee while overlooking the bay as the sun rises up from the eastern horizon, THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU. Caleta Tortuga gets my highest recommendation.
We stayed art Casa Tortuga for one week. The apartment was clean, had nice furniture and lovely bathrooms. The balcony looked over the harbor and was a good a good place to watch the sunrise and sunset. The kitchen was well equipped, and we cooked in several times. There were masks, fins and beach towels provided, as well as an outdoor shower to wash the sand off. The caretaker, Dick, was very helpful and told about the best beach: Brava. The apartment is in a neighborhood so it's not completely private, but Culebra is so laid back it didn't matter. We rented a golf cart and it was great. Shopping and beaches were all within easy distance. We had a wonderful vacation. The snorkeling was fantastic, especially when we swam with turtles.
We greatly enjoyed our stay at Caleta Tortuga, would stay there again, and would recommend it to friends and family looking for a nice, low-key, clean and comfortable rental. Luxurious it isn't, but the bathrooms are nicely appointed, the towels and linens were new and of good quality, and beach gear (snorkels, beach chairs) are kindly provided. The owners and property manager are very nice and responded promptly to our questions and concerns.
Restaurants: aside from Zaco's Tacos and one of the Flamenco kiosks--the one at the back, Dona Mari's--we didn't care much for the dining (we found it overpriced for what it was). You are better off, if so inclined, stocking up on groceries and making your own meals, using the gas grill provided at the house. Attractions: we never got tired of beautiful Flamenco Beach, but also enjoyed Tamarindo, Zoni, and snorkeling at Carlos Rosario.
We loved our stay in Culebra. The view from the house is outstanding and watching the sunrise and the evening shadows from the deck was a major joy. Dick the manager is a legend and was a high light of trip. The house was clean, neat, and provided everything the two of us needed for a quality stay. However, the future traveler should be aware that this house is located in a residential area on a Caribbean island. We enjoyed the "local color" of the neighborhood but we could see where others might not enjoy the cars on blocks and the nightly K-9 choir. The roosters do crow and they start at about 4:00 am. If you like to be local when you travel and yet you want clean and comfortable, then this is the place for you. Bring ear plugs and relax. Best beaches, best food, friendliest people. We will be back.
For simple comfort this is a nice vacation rental. We stayed in the top half of Caleta Tortuga for a week. The listing is accurate but be forewarned about neighborhood dogs that tend to bark a lot after dark and roosters that welcome the new morning! The property is clean and well maintained; we were met at the ferry by the manager Dick from whom we also rented a car (he lives across the street and is very helpful). We went daily to different beaches, all gorgeous. Susie's restaurant is within walking distance and others are within easy reach by car. Internet works well.
Our family of four spent a terrific week in Caleta Tortuga. The location is convenient for proximity to town and most beaches, including Flamenco. The apartment is exactly as described in the listing. It is very clean, cheerful, and well maintained. We enjoyed the lovely view from the balcony. Dick S., who manages the property for the owners, lives right down the street. He was very welcoming and helpful, yet respectful of our privacy. Culebra is a special place, and staying at Caleta Tortuga was a pleasant experience for our family.
