Amazing hosts, amazing place!
I'm so mad that I forgot to review John and Maggie's home earlier (my husband and I actually stayed in June-July of 2013). From the first email to our last day Ualani farm was more than we could have hoped for. It was dark and raining when we arrived late, but John and Maggie welcomed us into their main house and gave us all kinds of goodies to tide us over until we could make it to a grocery store (so sweet). They seemed like really lovely and laid back people. I think we go the best sleep in that cottage--which is on the property but totally private from the main residence. You could hear various birds and frogs all the time, I loved the porch and hung out there often. From the back you can see the ocean and swaying fruit trees. From the kitchen you can see a lovely hill--which Maggie told me was the site of a historic battle--I wish I could remember the story! The house was a perfect launching pad for hitting the beaches and hiking (perfect for getting a jump on Haleakala). One of my favorite things about the place was the Maui revealed book we discovered which had all of these amazing and incredibly helpful notes about the various beaches and hikes. I think it really helped us avoid tourist-traps, getting lost, and make the most of our time in Haiku. If I can make one suggestion it's to visit the Tuk Tuk food truck--it's a converted school bus that serves the best green papaya salad I've ever had. I really hope we're back in Haiku sometime soon and wish nothing but the best for our lovely hosts.
