Even Better than I expected!
If you are like me, you have looked at 100 rentals trying to find just the right one for your Hawaiian vacation. And now you have happened upon this one. Trust me...Pick this one. I had never been to Hawaii and had never done a vacation rental house. I wanted to spend a week totally unplugged from work and soaking in the Hawaiian vibe. I could not have chosen a better place. I was a bit overwhelmed by the whole rental process, but Susanna and John promptly and politely replied to all of my questions. Soon I had booked it and was counting the days. We flew into Hilo and drove to Kehena Makai. The directions provided were perfect. I walked into the house and could not believe that it was even better than the pictures. Completely comfortable, fully stocked, and the view from the lanai...unbelievable. The house was immaculate, and we enjoyed the beds that faced out onto the water so that we could see every sunset. You can absolutely feel the spray from the ocean on the lanai and we were sucked out onto the porch for many hours reading to the sound of the pounding surf or just watching it roll in and out, mesmerized. While you have the feeling of complete relaxing isolation, there is a small community surrounding the house that is fun to walk around. Also, at the house, a large flat screen TV with DirecTV, a great wi-fi connection, and a land line phone keep you connected, if you so desire. A fully stocked kitchen let us cook most nights and a new washer and dryer let us wash clothes when we needed to. There is a front porch with a grill and a table, but we were so taken by the ocean, we never sat there. A great secluded black sand beach is about 1/2 mile east. About 3 miles west is the small community of Kalapana, which has a fabulous cafe, a coffee shop, and a small market with great prices on essentials (even better than what we paid at Safeway in Hilo). We shared a table with locals at the cafe and learned some of the history of the area. Don't miss crossing the street from the cafe and taking a walk out across the lava field to another more expansive black sand beach. Scenic drives are close as are other great restaurants (try Kaleo's in Pahoa). Volcano NP is just one hour away (although we missed it because of the government shut down). Hilo has all the necessities you need, but take it from me...once you get to this magical place, you will not want to leave.
Owner's Response: I dreamed of whales last night, I missed my Hawaii, it's been a while. But this morning I woke up with this notice from Homeaway of this nice article (I'd rather call it an article than a review, well written Wendy)! This is "da kine" review we'd love to have, thank you, thank you and thank you! We're also glad to know that you had a good time and enjoyed our home - that's very important for a vacation and that's the reason why we turned our house into a vacation rental home, so more people could enjoy the beautiful part of Hawaii, since this area is so unique among all the Hawaiian islands. You could have the lush resorts on the white sandy beach everywhere but you could not see the beautiful and unique Puna district, the Black Sand beach, Uncle Robert's night market (think of Hawaiiana far beyond of a market), the Volcano National Park, the Wai'Opae tide pools, the people, the spirit and the energy etc, etc. Come and experience all these then you can tell your friends and families that "I've been to Hawaii!", while of course you will have to find the right home to stay to enjoy.
Aloha to Wendy, and to all!
