A great place to get away from it all!
Our family had a wonderful stay at Villa Mango over the Christmas holiday. The house is beautiful and comfortable, and the beachfront location cannot be matched! The master bedroom and balcony off the living room have a beautiful view of the ocean on the second floor, and the open dining area on the first floor also gives you an amazing view of beach and ocean at every meal, and of course the sound of the waves.
We live in Santiago, about two hours away, and have been to many beaches on the north coast of the DR. The beach location is the best that I have seen thus far. The sand is white and the water is clear and calm, which is great for kids. And Punta Rucia is not a touristy area, so there are not many people on the beach, aside from those getting into boats for tours to Cayo Arena. When you step off the front step of the house you are literally on the beach, which meant that our kids could play in the sand even while inside the fenced-in yard.
The house is nicely decorated, all of the appliances/electronics and implements are very modern and well-maintained. The air conditioning in the bedrooms ensures comfortable rest at night as well. The owners were also very friendly and helpful through the entire rental process. They met us personally when we arrived at the house to give us the keys and to show us around the property.
The local attractions were a highlight of the trip. We had a memorable trip to the manatee reserve only ten minutes away and sighted around 10 manatees! We also rented the owner's boat for a private trip to Cayo Arena for great snorkeling and a tour of the nearby mangroves. We had some of the best fresh fish, pescado frito, that we have ever eaten from the restaurant next door. The nearby restaurant at Punta Rucia Lodge was also excellent.
A few pointers to keep in mind. We love the house because it is on a quiet, beautiful beach unspoiled by tourists. However, you need to be prepared to be in an area with less conveniences. If you plan to eat much in the house, you will need to buy groceries in your city of origin (Puerto Plata or Santiago), because you can get some basic groceries at a local colmado but not much. The closest gas station is also about a half-hour drive away. A backup inverter and generator ensured that we had electricity at all times, but the AC and water heater do not run on the inverter and generator. But if you want an unspoiled beach in paradise, this is the place for you!
