About Carl-Philippe Mangones

We've been married for 7 years and have a wonderful baby girl of 5 years of age. We love the water and enjoy our weekends on our boat!

Carl-Philippe Mangones purchased this villa in 2013

Why Carl-Philippe Mangones chose Puerto Plata

This was love at first site! We first bought our boat last year and we were looking for the perfect place to enjoy the boating life, for us, Punta Rucia was the most amazing place to own a boat in the northern coast.

A few months later, we found this great opportunity with our teacher from Law-School that was looking for a potential buyer to sale his 40 year old weekend retreat that he had remodeled back than. We jumped on the occasion and remodeled it by today's standards, this was certainly one of the best decisions we have taken in our 7 years of marriage.

This is truly a unique paradise far from the big crowd!

What makes this villa unique

Beach House right on the bay, with protection from the Atlantic big waves. This is the perfect spot for the family and small kids to enjoy the tranquility of calm waters. Punta Rucia is still a quiet and secret touristic site away from the big crowd. This is a small town where everyone knows each other by name and live in harmony. This is truly the perfect spot to disconnect and have true relaxing vacations.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This was a family vacation for us, with three kids in their 20's. We normally rent a house rather than staying at a resort. Compared to other houses we have rented, this was well laid out, nicely decorated and in great shape. Carl-Phillipe and Natalie have done a great job of making this a home, and having them there to meet us was a big plus.

We contemplated renting a car but decided not to after reading blog posts on trip advisor. Having Josue' pick us up, take us to the market and deliver us safely was a godsend. DO NOT rent a car. The grocery store on the way from STI is impressive - stock up there for the week, as the local store has only the basics. A word of fair warning though, I called my credit card companies before leaving to make sure they knew my travel plans but both still denied the first charge I tried to make, which happened to be at the grocery store. Fortunately there was an ATM there and we were able to get pesos to pay the bill.

Take lots of sunscreen. The bugs were not bad, mosquitos in the early morning and evening so take something for that as well. We were able to sleep without the a/c and it was 90+ each day. The beds are very comfortable and each room has a fan. However, I would recommend taking ear plugs for the occasional impromptu party along the beach and the ceiling fans can be noisy if the system is running on battery power. I would agree with a previous reviewer, the house is even nicer than the pictures would suggest.

Punta Rucia is not a resort town. The residents are very poor and make do with what they have. If you are looking for manicured grounds and pretty buildings, this is not for you. However, if you enjoy seeing other cultures, this is a great adventure. The Punta Rucia residents all seemed kind and gracious, so we never felt unsafe or unwelcome.

Our biggest challenge was the language. None of us spoke spanish, and few people in the area speak english. Klieby (boat captain) really does not speak english, although we were able to communicate and he was very helpful. Alfonse speaks french creole but we were also generally able to communicate well enough to get our point across. The manager and one of the servers at the resort next door (Anthony!) were very helpful with translations.

In all, it was a great vacation for us.

Just gorgeous!

  • 5 of 5

Yes, the house is right on the beach! Carl-Philippe and Natalie were very attentive to our needs. They picked my boyfriend and I up at the Santiago airport, and brought us grocery shopping on our way "home" for the week. We highly recommend you take advantage of the airport pickup. Traffic is crazy, and there were few road signs on the way to Punta Rucia. We went to sleep with the sound of the waves every night and Natalie welcomed us with fresh flowers. We appreciated the wifi, and loved the bluetooth speakers! The kitchen had everything we required. We enjoyed the grill, which Alfonso started for us almost every night with real wood charcoal!

The water was nice and warm; the temperature was perfect, 85-90 degrees every day, but not too humid. It didn't rain once while we were there. The wind did pick up in the afternoon, but died down towards evening, and it was very comfortable sleeping weather without a/c. We loved the outside dining! There were a few mosquitoes, but not too bad, and while they did have "no see-ums", if you kept bug spray on, they didn't bother you. (we forgot the last night.. so did get a few bumps..)

There is a beautiful coral reef with gorgeous tropical fish to the left of the beach out about 200 ft, that you could snorkel to if you are a decent swimmer.

Right next door there is a restaurant which served excellent Mojitos, and after a day of scuba diving with Rene' at Corales Scuba Diving (highly recommend!) we ate at his hotel/restaurant. (also highly recommend!) The Italian pizza restaurant right down the beach was very good as well. Most of the time we ate at our house as we love to cook while we are on vacation.

We felt no qualms about our security. Alfonso was on the property every night. A big plus for us was Milady, who came in to clean every morning. (She also did our dishes, which we very much appreciated!) Klavie, the boat captain, took us down the beach to buy fresh fish/lobster the first day. We do not speak much Spanish, and there were only a few people in the area who spoke a little English. But we were able to make ourselves somewhat understood. (There's an app for that!) And we also used a currency converter app which was very helpful.

This was one of our best vacations ever! It is not a tourist area, which is why we picked this place! If you truly want to get away from it all, to a beautiful beach on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, this is your place!

Thank you, Carl-Philippe and Natalie!

Perfect private beach house

  • 5 of 5

As all of the reviews state, this is a perfect vacation to get away from everything. Natalie was so kind and went above and beyond answering my questions. Our family of 5 (children 13, 8 and 6) had so much fun without outside the distractions of a traditional "hotel" vacation. We don't speak Spanish, and even though very few in the area speak English, we didn't have any problems! It is a bit of a drive from STI (2.5 hours) but worth it. Natalie arranged the driver, who was very nice and helpful with money exchange and grocery shopping.

It is very remote, so be sure to stock up at the grocery store at the airport. There is a truck that drives through town in the afternoon that we purchased fresh fruits and vegetables from. My children would hear the fruit truck microphone (like the ice cream truck in the states, but no clue what they were saying) and would run from the beach to see what we could buy. We did eat a few meals from the restaurant next door, menu in Spanish only so be sure to get a translation app on your phone). It wasn't fancy, which was perfect. We also ate at the little pizza shop in town, super yummy. There is also a small grocery front store with beer, rum soda and very basic supplies. We walked through town everyday and never felt unsafe at anytime.

The beach couldn't be more beautiful, perfect for little ones swimming. For 7 days my kids played TOGETHER on the beach, swings and hammocks, that may have been my favorite part. We never turned on the tv except one rain day for a movie (we brought an Apple TV incase the kids got bored, which never happened) I would recommend bug spray in the evening, that was the only time they ever bothered us. Make sure to visit the island with kleipe. My husband and son loved his private snorkeling tour. Kleipe, Alfonso and Mylady were all super kind and helpful and available, but never bothersome. If you want to reconnect with your family and get away from an over scheduled life, come here!

Beautiful home on the beach! Can't wait to return!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 7 had a wonderful time enjoying the most beautiful blue water we've ever seen! The house is lovely, comfortable and well tended to by Alfonso and the housekeeper who take care of everything while we lounged in a hammock. The beach is steps away and you wake each morning to crystal clear water. The 2 days we spent on the boat with Kleiby as our driver and snorkeling expert were highlights of the trip! Not only did he load up our cooler and supplies for the day, he was a wonderful guide around the reefs near Paradise Island! Kleiby also was available to walk with us to the small "town" nearby and introduced us to a charming italian pizza restaurant where the cheese is made fresh! The kitchen in the home is very nice but we enjoyed most of our big meals at the restaurant next door. The fried whole fish, plantains, fruit and white wine made a perfect meal! The staff is so friendly and they allowed us to run a tab which we paid on the last day. This was great as we traveled with 5 teens and they could go for a banana smoothie or lunch whenever they liked (leaving the 2 moms some quiet reading time!). I would recommend this beautiful, well taken care of house to anyone who is seeking a true Dominican retreat. It's far from any cruise ship or resort tourist areas and we were charmed to wait for cows crossing the road on our 1 1/2 hour journey from the airport at Puerto Plata. The owner arranged transport in a luxury van which was very comfortable and the scenery is a lovely introduction to the beautiful island. Thank you Carl-Philippe and Natalie for sharing paradise with us!

A Dream Come True

  • 5 of 5

As hard as it is to believe, Villa Mango is even nicer than it looks in the photos. It's RIGHT on the most beautiful beach we've ever seen, and entire our stay in Punta Rucia was like a dream. If you're sick of giant resorts or cruises and want a vacation that's truly private, peaceful and unique, this is it.

Between Carl-Philippe, the groundskeeper Alfons, the housekeeper Rafaelina and the boat captain Kleiby, every little thing we wanted was taken care of. We didn't have to lift a finger other than to mix another drink! We spent most of our days lounging in the hammocks or swimming in the crystal clear water, and in the evenings we wandered either to the restaurant next door or into the quiet little town for dinner. A small market down the road had everything we ran out of during the week, as well as locally-grown fruits and vegetables. There is an enormous grill right in the yard, so we grilled fresh-caught Mahi-Mahi two nights of the week, and Rafaelina made us an amazing fish soup with the leftovers the next day. All of the staff and everyone we met in town was incredibly friendly, honest and helpful, and as a result we got a genuine taste of the local Dominican culture that you could NEVER find at a big, walled-in resort.

Having the private boat was also amazing--we went out snorkeling at a stunning coral reef one day, and went out deep-sea fishing another day, all without dealing with any other tourists! There is also a place to rent bikes, 4-wheelers, etc. just down the beach, so we rented a jet ski one day and went cruising up and down the pristine, undeveloped coast. We've never seen anything like it--miles and miles of lush mountains and beaches without a single building to spoil the view.

We truly cannot recommend this spot enough, and we're already making plans to come back. It was the most hassle-free, scenic and refreshing vacation any of us can remember, and an experience nobody's stories can rival. Thank you Carl-Phillipe and Natalie, you made our dreams a reality!

Private escape to Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Carl-Philippe and Natalie were so greatly accommodating and helpful right from the start of our vacation. The house was beautiful and right on the beach. We were struck by how clear the water was in Punta Rusia and the beauty of the white sand beach. The house has pretty much anything you need for a getaway, snorkeling gear, sand toys, boogey boards and the like. The hammocks and tree swing were great for the kids too:) We were especially impressed with the staff and how friendly and helpful everyone was - they really made us feel like part of the community (Alfonso,Alphie,Milagros,Keivi,Rafelina, and our extra security, Pierre) The experience has been so amazing the entire family joked about not ever having to leave!

Thank you again and know that if in the future we choose to come back to Punta Rusia we will certainly stay here!
