Love it and the home was wonderful. Manager dealt with minor problem promptly! The home is well appointed but I think could use a little TLC(not much). Great location and quiet. I would give it an 8 out of ten based on the rental cost. Biggest plus no surprises! Cheers
We are in the 6th day of our week-long stay at Makana Akua and it is exactly like the advertisement: Nice house, nice furnishings, nice kitchen, nice backyard, beautiful views from the back porch and a spectacular location on the beach. The only downside is the ocean is quite treacherous here. I tried to go boogie boarding here today and a neighbor stopped me. He said he had been living here for 38 years, that he used to be a lifeguard, that he has had to pull three people out of the ocean here and one of them drowned. With that as a warning, I played in the shore break, but even that was pretty strong. Of course, this is winter surf, so maybe the summer surf is more benign. In any case, Hanalei Bay is just 15 minutes away and it has safe surf.
Hanalei Bay, by the way, is a very nice Old Hawaiian town full of good places to eat and drink and the friendliest people I've met in a long while. Postcards and Baracuda topped our list of favorites, but don't forget to catch the s
My husband and I and another couple stayed at Makana Akua for a week in March. It was the PERFECT vacation spot for us. The house provided enough privacy for both couples. The amenities were wonderful, beautiful kitchen and family room and it was nice to have the grill available. The location was beautiful, just a few steps from the ocean and walking distance from a sweet coffee shop and restaurant.
Weather was mostly sunny but ocean was not swimmable for the majority of our trip due to high waves. Villa was very comfortable in a very nice area of Kuai. Villa had some issues like the microwave being unusable and spiders and ants all over countertops. Justin did at least try to resolve these problems as quickly as humanly possible. The remote that controls the TV, stereo, etc constantly needed to replace batteries and there were issues with the stereo system which is advertised as state of the art but not really so. The bedrooms were perfect - the villa amply stocked with everything that you would need to cook great meals - this was greatly appreciated! Location is splendid as well.
We enjoyed our stay (July 24 to 31, 2013). The directions provided by Luxury Retreats were clear, and we were able to drive to the cottage without difficulty, even through it was our first time on Kauai. (There were actually 5 or 6 one-lane bridges between the airport at Lihue and the cottage, rather than just one), There are neighbors close by on either side of the cottage, but there was privacy with the beautiful trees/plants strategically planted around the property (that is, we could sometimes hear, but not really see, our neighbors. However, the neighbors were never noisy/inconsiderate). We loved the direct beach access. There is a public walkway next to the property, but again, this was never an issue. The kitchen is large and functional, and the grill is very large and nice. The bedrooms are roomy and nicely finished, as are the baths. The tv/dvd was easy to navigate, thanks to the detailed instructions left for us. We enjoyed eating outside, facing the ocean.
